      The Green Works dethatcher (power rake) worked great for me. I was surprised how much dried up dead grass it pulled up. Once I was done I picked as much as I could with the mower bag. Then I raked up the rest and put down some grass seed. I watered twice a day when it wasn’t raining and now my lawn looks great. I have about an acre of lawn. The Green Works dethatcher made the toughest part of the job much easier. It’s worth every penny.

    Got my Greenworks last year and used it on my 8,000 sq. ft. lawn. It worked very well. I hauled away 12 barrels full of dead grass. One note... after I finished the job I removed the black cover on top of the unit. It covers the motor and drive belt and has cooling holes in it. The area underneath was packed with dead grass. This should be removed before the next use to increase efficiency and decrease the chance of overheating. Nice little machine!

      I have rented a dethatcher from Home Depot the past 2 years in late Summer. Each time, the units looked brand new with Honda engines. Each year if the unit angles toward the gas tank side it would cut out. So I would only be able to go in one direction on the sloped portion of my lawn. Really a pain in the ass. I'm ordering the Greenworks today. Even if it doesn't perform as well as the gas rental unit, I can see it will take one extra pass to get there.

That is the question to how well it held up. If all the springs are broken and its completely worn out after 1 use, is it really worth the purchase?... Missing a critical part of the review.

    I bought a Sunjoe to scarify my lawn for overseeding and I was amazed at how well it works! The thing looks cheap, but the electric motor doesn't bog down at all, not even on the its lowest setting. It cleans up easyily and doesn't take too much room in my over-crowded garage. Much better alternative to the hassle of renting a power rake! The overseeding, btw, came out great and I attribute that to grooves cut into the turf by the scarifier. Thanks for the recommendation!

    I'm glad to see you thought the electric was worthwhile. My long cord was 1/2 the price of the machine, I wanted to make sure I didn't trip a circuit because of the amps the motor pulls and resistance of a long cord. I bought my de-thatcher with the exact economic argument you had - if I get two uses out of it it was probably better than renting a commercial machine one time (one use so far). On a larger yard it is a hassle running the cord around trees and things. Cord management has to be the biggest hassle of using the electric machines. Thanks for the fun intro. Maybe some thoughts on edging in a future video - whether to, hows and whys?

    • @pestandlawnginja

      The cord issues.... ugh. Yes that was annoying. But just an oversight compared to value a s functionality. Ill put your edging idea on the ideas list. Great idea.

  • @friendlyhonda3187
    @friendlyhonda3187 5 лет назад +2

    I have both as well - the one thing with the electric is when you get to a grass with stolons (I had a few bad patches of creeping bentgrass), they get tangled around the drum and the outside bushings, causing the machine to quit. That happened a few times until I decided to jump on a used bluebird power rake. The flail blades don’t care about stolons (or anything else), and just power through it all. In addition, thick dead grass can overwhelm the electric unit. That said, it is lower maintenance and cheaper. Stores on the wall too.

    Just a heads up, I believe they all come with the wrong instructions.
    Level 1 or low, is the most aggressive, the tines go approx 10 mm into the ground, and should NOT be used for transporting like they mention on the instructions.
    Level 3 or High, is the least aggressive, or 1 mm into the ground, and should be used for transporting. The instructions say High is for going 3/8" into the ground which is the exact opposite of what is happening.
    Think Low - low down into the ground, and High - high up barely scratching the surface of the ground.
    I attempted to remove the wheels to and adjust them so that they follow the directions that are printed on the side but the wheels only work one way. So just ignore the instructions.

    I had to throw it out after 4 uses.... The scarifier is too rough on the machine. There is a gear component connected to the motor that is made up of very weak and cheap metal that is unreplaceable. There's no give to the machine if it hits a rock or hard compacted soil and eventually breaks. The dethatching cyclinder doesn't work as well as the scarifier cylinder but the tines have some give if it hits any hard surface so I would recommend using the dethatching cylinder and never using the scarifying cylinder. Just a FYI from someone who's used and broken a sunjoe even with very careful use.

    Dude, that Vanna White lady is a cutie pie! You should ask her out on a date! Seriously thought, the GreenWorks (or SunJoe) would win hands down because a home user may have to do a 3rd pass to get equal debris removal, but when you consider the amount of time (and novice damage) of a power rake versus the time you need to get into the truck, connect a trailer (or rent a truck/trailer), drive to a big box store, rent a power rake - even with no wait time, load it up, tie it down, bring the power rake home, unload, do the work, refill the gas, clean it up the rental equipment, load it back onto the trailer, tied it down, take it back to the store, unload it, reclaim your deposit/pay for any overage on time and drive back home, that 1/3 less per pass is easily going to take less time, money and frustration than what is required in renting and traveling with a gas powered flail style power rake. Compare that with the electric version which you'd pay $175-$200 for the electric unit and a 3 pronged 10 or 12 gauge 100 ft extension cord (anything less and you'd likely destroy the Greenwors/Sunjoe electric motor), and I think the electric version is a hands down winner. Looking behind door #2 was a clear winner! And you did a great jacting like a spazzed out or panicked/excited person on a TV show. Perfect over acting to match the TV people!
    I've not used the Demand CS, but I've used Bifen IT. How would you compare those two products (assuming you've used Bifen) for usefulness and length of coverage? Bifen is rated for 90 days of coverage and I've found at the maximum application rate I had coverage for about 100-110 days, and that was living near swampy land where the mosquito pressure was off the charts. My 7 YO (4 years ago) was almost never outside playing because she would come back in 20 minutes later, even after almost giving her a bath in bug repellent, and be covered in bug bites. There's another insecticide that is bee safe, but I cannot remember the name of it. If you're looking for another reason for a video, maybe you could post a video covering the pro's and con's of these insecticides.
