I have the Battle 2 in the 8000 size and the Pursuit 2 in a 6000 size. I use them both for surf fishing. They both work great. The only quibble I have is with the way the line is laid on the battle 2. It’s a little uneven.
You may need to add, or remove a shim washer that sits on top of the click rotor on the spool shaft. If the spool line is uneven towards the top of the reel, with less on the bottom, add a shim. If it is less on top and more on the bottom, remove a shim. See if that helps. - Dennis
The fierce 2 i keep hearing about that one but i just want 3 rods and I'm calling it a day. I'm fishing from a bridge and sometimes a pier but i want something strong and the Penn pursuit 3 6000 and the 8000 are great to fish with but i want a battle 2 6000 or 8000 and see what that does for me. Mr. Dennis should I use circle hooks or j hooks I like setting the hook but I'm hearing different stories so school me.
If you are doing catch and release or need to release fish due to size or bag limits, then you should use the circle hooks. They are designed to hook the lip and enable the fish to survive vs a deep hook set on the J hooks, which can injure a fish that you are trying to release. Both are effective, so the release vs keep is the major difference between the two.
@@2ndChanceTackle dennis I'm not releasing anything whatever I catch goes home with me i have a family to feed. But I want a hook that when I catch them they not coming off when I'm pulling them up. So can I buy them i heard they're solid but i like my j hooks

I have a Penn pursuit 3 8000 rod and that black and smoke is soooooooo smooth I love that rod but everybody telling me to go with the battle 2 well I'm going to see what's all the hoopla about lol
You can remove the spool by unscrewing the drag adjuster knob on top of the reel. Turn it counterclockwise until it is removed. You may need to pull up on the spool as you are unwinding the knob in order to keep pressure on it. Dennis
2nd Chance Tackle I got that but after that, it isn’t like most reels where you just pull off the spool after you unscrew the drag. You have to get into the interior and take out 7 screws before you can pull it out. But when you do that, you sill have a the rod that runs vertically through the whole reel attached to the spool which prevents you from being able to use the machine to spool new line on.
You are welcome. The Battle is a proven reel and a lot of folks like them versus the others for because the HT-100 heavy duty drags. Best wishes - Dennis
Ya I live in Alaska and I’m going to be using this for a halibut reel and they take many long runs the the good washers and more drag is definitely a must
Depending on your type of fishing, the length should be 7 to 10 feet. The 7 foot would be a medium/heavy rod for boat fishing. The 8-10 would be for surf. The Penn Battalion for surf and the Penn Rampage for boat would match nicely with this reel - Dennis
I want to see which Penn should I get my father in law have a Penn pursuit 3 and it looks nice but I want to get me one should I get the Penn battle 2 8000
The core difference between the Battle and the Pursuit is that the Battle has a much stronger HT-100 drag system. The pursuit has the felt drag washers. The answer to your question depends n the type of fishing you are doing. If you do not rely on drag washers for big fighting fish, but rather lock them down when fishing, then both reels are fine. If you are using these trolling for 20+ pound fighting fish, then the Pursuit's washers will wear out before those in the Battle. Thanks for asking Dennis

The Penn Pursuit will meet you needs if you are Pier or bottom fishing from shore. The other consideration is how many times a year you will go fishing. All depends. If you re doing inshore, rivers or lakes and casting 10# line for comparable fish, then the 4000 is the right size. If you are surf casting or catfishing and using line 15 pound test or greater, then you probably want the 6000, which is the bigger reel. - Dennis
at least in the 4000 series, the battle II has a metal rotor where the fierce 2 has a graphite rotor (The thing the bail wire connects to) the fierce 2 has a little bit of flex if you squeeze it where the battle 2 has no flex.. The battle 2 is a little heavier because of this though.
These are the trade offs Penn has chosen and they add up to a Good - Pursuit, Better - Fierce, Best - Battle sales strategy. These are great reels with each designed around specific price points and types of fishing. You are right on, the metal frame on the battle adds strength that comes at a cost (weight), but if it is your daily driver and you do a lot of fishing, it should be your choice. For the occasional angler who goes a few times a year, the Pursuit is fine and those that make it a weekend hobby will find the Fierce perfect. - Thanks for adding the comment - Dennis
Also guy anytime now they should be dropping the Penn Pursuit 3. If you search for it on RUclips you can get the basics. I do not believe it's available yet but they did get rid of the felt drag system and replaced it with a carbon-fiber drag and a braid ready spool as well as a couple other features. It is in the 2018 fall lineup. Again check out GMan Mule 1... coming soon...
No they are dropping the Pursuit II and going to the III. I bought 2 of the pursuit II 3000 size on clearance and gave one to a young under paid co worker to get him back into fishing. Kept the other one for myself. Paired them both up with Shakespeare medium action 7 foot one piece agility rods on sale for a little over ten dollars each. Even a blind hog can find an acorn every now and then. I dont think you need to break the bank to go fishing. My opinion there isn't enough difference in the Penn Battle II and the Fierce II to justify buying the Battle II. Be better off spending the extra money on the live liner.Fierce II like I did.
@@worthdoss8043 that's exactly what I meant? Trapping means they are coming out with... Maybe I should have used a different word. But it looks like it's going to be a lot more solid of a reel. They are putting the same HT drag system that is on the battle 2 and adding a braid ready spool. I'm sure the price tag is going to have to go up I just wonder how much?
I didn't review the Sargus because it is not in the Penn current line up. The Sargus is similar to the Penn Fierce. This reel fits below the Battle. The main difference is that the Battle has the HT-100 drags and the Sargus has the felt drag washers. - Dennis
Yes. I have actually heard, but am not sure, that the Sargus is identical mechanically, to the Pflueger Infusion. Both Penn and Pflueger are owned by Pure Fishing. It is suggested that the only difference in the two lines are the body adornments. The current line of Penn Products on their web site does not show the Sargus as in production. - Dennis
I want to ask you what you think about the penn battalion inshore fishing pole to go with the penn battle 2 6000 with gamakatsu hooks I need your opinion I heard you was the best so please lead me in the right direction
The Battalion rod will match well with the Pursuit, Fierce or Battle reels. The Gamaktsu hooks are very sharp and resist corrosion, They are no more difficult to take out than any other hook - Dennis
Thanks for your comment Tommy. You are correct, there isn't that much difference for the average person. They are all top reels. Thanks for watching - Dennis
If you had a chance to buy an older 650ss in great shape or a Fierce II in great shape for the same money which would you go with? I don’t have a lot of experience with spinning gear so any help is appreciated.

@@gmanmule6931 a year later you can get the pursuit 3 6000 with an 8 foot rod for 56 bucks at walmart. very good deal
What about penn sargus ii 8000?
I didn't review the Sargus because it is not in the Penn current line up. The Sargus is similar to the Penn Fierce. This reel fits below the Battle. The main difference is that the Battle has the HT-100 drags and the Sargus has the felt drag washers. - Dennis
Is sargus different from other penn's production?
@@2ndChanceTackle what you think about the rampage rod from penn
I am not familiar with that one
@@2ndChanceTackle what is better circle hooks or j hooks please help me out thanks
I have all three n if u dont want spent too much get the pursuit n if not get the battle all 3 r really good reels
I would go with the Fierce II. If you are interested, send me a note at 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I can you you a quote on a factory refurb at a great price. I have access to the Fierce II 5000, 6000 8000 and the 6000LL models. We can also chat on why the Fierce vs the older 650 Spinfisher. Thanks for asking - Dennis
I need something that's going to help me catch fish very fast
Do you mean a high retrieve ratio reel? What fish are you chasing? Fresh or saltwater? Weight? There are a lot of options, but each depends on what "fast" means. Fast doesn't always win the race. - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle what ever I can catch I just love fishing
@@2ndChanceTackle me and my brother brought our father a penn pursuit 3 and it felt great but I want to know how good the penn battle 2 is? is it better than the fierce I want 4 rods
My fierce 2's rais and lower shaft gear was completely shaved becuase of a yellowtail snapper lol
Sounds like you have a story to tell! I'll trade a busted reel for a nice fish. These reels are pretty durable and capable of landing the big fish. Curious, did you fix the reel or go and get another Fierce? - Dennis
I love fishing but I have to stay in my budget
