I know and understand that the story is a bit simple, but it is doing some unique things and as the story goes on we can expect it to get better, at least for what it is trying to do. I don't want to compare series with each other but Demon Slayer isn't the most complex story either but with it's adaptation it became really really popular and successful (absolutely no offense to Demon Slayer). I can see Kaiju No. 8 translating into an anime really well. A good adaptation can add so much here. I hope that it being under TOHO is a good thing. Kaiju no.8 in all honesty has complexity in it, the complexity is just hidden underneath it's own simple surface. On top of that the past of MANY of the characters haven't been revealed yet. We are nearly 100 chapters in and we still haven't seen kafka's past outside of some brief flashbacks of him as a kid. People (or more less English speaking fans) are too quick to hate on the manga for it's simplicity when simplicity and complexity are 2 common things that all media cover including in America so the overwhelming need for complexity in every existing story is just a result of having high standards.
    However another thing I find odd is how people will say *"Kafka is like every other protagonist"* yet most protagonist don't get introduced in their later lives after they tried to accomplish their goal and failed at it many times. Right out the gate his introduction isn't "typical" by any means and his entire persona is the representation of *"You're never too old to follow your dreams"* which is a quote I know many people have heard of. Having your whole life ahead to accomplish your goal is much different in comparison to your younger years being behind you but you're still working for your goal regardless.

Its not me hating on SnK, I followed that manga for the longest tims, I just use this because people hate on other works for being simple. The story was very intentionally leading up to an Ultraman like plot where he would get insane powers, people wouldn't know if they should trust him (ultraman) , he would struggle and doubting if he is human anymore (kamen rider), but still fighting in secret to help the defense force. Then he just becomes any other shonen man and yells and punches things really hard, head empty.

This is not what Kaiju no. 8 accomplishes unfortunately, and so for me it's just another generic battle manga. Even Kafka as a character still feels like "young shonen protag" number 264. His introduction as a thirty-something sap working a shitty job was so cool, and then they underplay this aspect immediately as soon as he gets his powers. Really sucks.
    That said, action and art are heat. Now, remind me to keep these criticisms in mind for if I ever talk about this series. LOL

    • @Kaiju-bm4ts
      @Kaiju-bm4ts Год назад +4

      Kaiju no.8 isn't your typical kaiju content, it doesn't use kaiju in the same fashion godzilla does, saying it's another generic manga all because it uses the concept of kaiju in a different way (which the kaiju genre has done MULTIPLE times in the past decades) is a bit contradictory when the genre has always experimented with the concept of kaijus. Ultraman was literally human sized before and he too had always been traditionally big, the term kaiju and daikaiju literally mean strange beast and large strange beast, that doesn't always apply to godzilla or anything of that field given how vague the terms beast or monster are. Those 2 terms can refer to anything, even humans based off appearance or behavior. Even Clifford the big red dog is a kaiju by default
      Kafka had a goal and he wasn't going to stay at his dead end job forever, his character is a literal representation of the quote *"'You're never too old to follow your dreams"* so the whole "he's just another shounen protagonist" doesn't work here. So what was he supposed to do? Be half human, half kaiju and continue working for a job he didn't want? All because his introduction was good? There is more to a character than what their introduction shows them. A typical shounen protagonist wouldn't be old, they would be young and still have their entire life ahead of them to accomplish their goal. Here kafka is way over his younger years and has tried to accomplish his goal as a human many times and failed, that is why his introduction is the way it is. Him as a kaiju, a older man and yet he still accomplishes his dream regardless of those challenges.
      If you're gonna criticize this manga, try to have better understanding of how diverse the term kaiju is, it's not limited to giant creatures fighting

    • @aketsuuu
      @aketsuuu Год назад +1

      @@Kaiju-bm4ts Still, what I'm saying is we have a critical lack of giant kaiju clashes in manga right now. This series had the perfect opportunity for that and didn't explore it as much. I still think Kaiju No. 8 is excellent otherwise, but I find it problematic in that it just does nothing to stand out from other battle shonen.
      I don't think you understood what I said about how I expected that, and it just didn't happen. Kaiju are diverse across Japanese media, but come on we missed out on something potentially awesome here.
      As for Kafka, no, he didn't have to stay at his dead end job. But at the very least show his struggles as an older man a bit more. The series honed in WAY TOO hard on his kaiju form over anything else.
      To me, this series does nothing to stand out from the crowd, and while I think it is better than most, a little distinction might help. Simple, good, but we need a little more to help it stand out. Kaiju are high up with Japanese culture, so I really feel like more could have been done here. The monster designs are already INCREDIBLE so I really do expect even better things to come especially with this recent arc.

      @@aketsuuu Again the series wasn't going for that and likely never will go for that, battle shounen literally copy each other all the time so what difference does it make?. The one thing that makes it stick out is that it has kaiju in it and a adult protagonist. Those 2 aspects alone makes it stand out to a extent. This isn't chainsaw man where it's reinventing the wheel or trying to reach a high bar.
      You're saying kaiju are diverse but still insist for them to be big and huge here?, that's not something I would call "diverse". You still got gamera, you still godzilla, you still gridman. There's other medias that are giving you your fix on big daikaiju so why must this series do the same when it already works within the context it has?. While the idea of giant kaiju fighting each other is cool, the kaiju genre is always experimenting with itself and this is another example of it.
      Kaiju no.8 will stand out once the anime gets more publicity which is literally how MOST manga get attention if they don't get alot of attention in America as it is. Meanwhile in Europe and Japan this manga gets twice the amount of attention, so much so you see buildings and trains in Europe with kaiju no.8 on them. The kaiju genre is niche worldwide especially in the west so it's not gonna stick out especially as a manga over here compares to Europe or Japan. Once anime comes out you'll get the attention this manga needs.

    • @aketsuuu
      @aketsuuu Год назад +1

      @@Kaiju-bm4tsIt still doesn't feel like an experimentation... I guess the villains so far have been and the idea of Number weapons is cool, but again, with an idea like kaiju, which are rarely explored in the manga medium, I expected more.
      I'm okay with experimentation, but we lack those sick giant monster battles on the page, and that's all I want. Kaiju No. 8 accomplishes almost nothing unique, and like cool... it's doing two things to distinguish itself, but when you've read over 100 battle shonen, you get tired of the way it's written. I'll adore stuff like JJK because its battles are so well done and I really do enjoy them, but Kaiju No. 8 is... well, I'm not even really sure how to describe it. The action is solid, but that's it. The story is serviceable and has solid moments, but that's it.
      Kaiju No. 8 to me is the definition of missed potential. There were loads of different angles they could have took with the kaiju direction, and they chose the fucking generic main character transformation with villains that we've seen before time and again approach. Why not do something like the titan forms from AoT, where Kafka basically becomes like a pilot for a kaiju body? I know it sounds dumb, but it's an idea.

      @Kaiju-bm4ts Год назад

      @@aketsuuu Okay why are you replying after 2 months 😑........also let me point out the contradictory in your comment
      To quote you real quickl *"When you've read over 100 battle shonen, you get tired of the way it's written"* yet you're a kaiju fan who's seen the same kaiju tropes being used over and over again and wanted to see that used again in this manga but simultaneously is tired of seeing the typical battle shonen style of storytelling? Kinda contradictory right? You can't say you want this overused trope but say you hate this other overused trope and acknowledge the story distinguishing itself for doing this trope differently but say it's not unique for using this other trope in same typical way.
      You're essentially implying shonen can't reuse tropes in the same fashion but the kaiju genre can?. Don't say you expected more and yet contradict yourself by revealing you wanted the same usual kaiju stuff. Comparing this to jjk doesn't even make sense when jjk is closer to chainsaw man or demon slayer when all 3 have demons.....not kaiju 🙄.....you're just making a unfair bias comparison between 2 irrelevant shonens with 2 completely different creatures to defend your double standards. Demon battles have no definitive way of how they're handled when they're handled in different ways same way kaiju battles are also handled in different ways....
      And bringing up aot is a hilarious comparison when kafka and eren are both kaijin at the end of the day my guy 🤣, kaijin are creatures with kaiju like attributes. Whether those attributes are size or appearance or power. Kafka simply has the appearance and power of a kaiju. Eren just has the size but still looks like a human even in titan form. Don't say kaiju no.8 is missed potential for reusing shonen tropes but you want it to be the same typical kaiju content we seen millions of times in the kaiju genre 🙄. If you know the idea is dumb then why use it as a example? Kaiju aren't just big and that isn't what defines them as a whole. Kafka is closer to a legitimate kaiju when he looks the part and has the powers to back it up. Eren just has size and that's it.
      If you think the story is solid along with the action then how is it missed potential?. It can't be missed potential if you want it to do this form of tropes but ignore this other form tropes. It will still be reusing typical tropes on either end which contradicts your argument on it having missed potential.

      If the manga has managed to make record breaking sells upon it's release, get a anime adaptation, get a light novel and at the moment at 8.88 million copies sold at circulation, that says alot about how interesting the manga is worldwide. It's ironic you say that and end things off by saying the story isn't revealing it's full potential by being bi weekly. So....the author isn't allowed to rest, recoup and work at a pace that works for him? You do realize Matsumoto is in his 40s right? The dude purposely had kafka be old for a reason.
      Something tells me your issues mainly are driven not by the "lackluster characters" or the "boring action panels" but from the bi weekly releases and you apply that issue you have with the releases onto the entire manga itself. A manga being released bi weekly doesn't affect the overall story, unless there's legitimate issues within the story, then the bi weekly releases are a issue of being inpatient for the manga, not the manga itself. Even freaking chainsaw man was being released by weekly for a long time and yet that story is praised not just for it's complexity but just in general.

    I'm very happy that we now have a popular kaiju manga and soon anime adaptation, especially since Japan surprisingly doesn't do a lot of kaiju content.
    However, there are a few things that I wish would change:
    Pacing - I like the pacing that the manga gives, but sometimes it skips over characters giving us less time to connect to them and their development. It would be nice if that was slowed down a bit.
    Story: Right now it feels like we are entering near the ending or final battle in the story with kaiju spawning everywhere. To me, it feels a bit too early and could've been pushed back a bit more unless the author pulls a 180 and says this isn't it which I'm hoping is the case.
    Kafka's Size: Now this one I'm not too picky on but it would've been nice to see a giant monster as the main character instead of a standard human-sized one. I know that there's Eren's attack titan, but it's basically a giant human and not that interesting to a creature with monstrous features. They probably avoided doing this so it didn't feel like aot, but I doubt it.
