- Pergear sent me their latest macro lens, an upgraded 60mm F2.8 2X Extreme Macro lens (2023 Version). I used this lens on my OM System OM-1 for some insect macro photography and I shared my thoughts here. I personally think this is the best value full manual macro lens out there, having true 200% magnification macro, very good optical performance at a low budget price of USD229.

Just found this for a £25 bargain on amazon, this videos making me even more excited for it!
Nice review with very crisp shots!
Thank you :)
Love the video Robin ❤ Your Macro photos are amazing ❤️ I know you have stated in past videos that it is not your preference to manual focus or use manual focus lenses…but you are awesome at it 😁 Keep up the great work 😁
nice review!
You do great work!
Robin, I love your videos. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, appreciate that!
Thank you Robin .
Thanks Christine.
Bloody ell ! never seen better macro photos. Just bought one, can't wait to try it.
Robin, thanks for this video. Options are always a good thing.
Thanks, especially budget options.
Thanks Robin
Thanks!
That lens looks intense. Thanks for this video Robin!
Thanks, glad I can share!
Lens sounds great Robin but your test is not fear. Think you can make any lens look good! Amazing stuff. 😇
Great video.
Robin, I am dumb so please be patient with me, but I have an OM-1 and the OLy Zuiko 60mm 2.8 macro and I cannot get very consistent 1:1 magnification to be clear and sharp. I try to use 1:1 and keep manual focus and rock toward and back from my subject, using Godox TT350, OM-1 Manual set to 1/250 shutter, f8/0, and 200 ISO, with a cheaper diffuser and I swear I get clear bug eyes like one time out of 1000 tries. I have also tried switching to S-AF and backing up some and getting out of 1:1 to get pics and even though they aren't as close as 1:1, those seem to come out much sharper than my 1:1 attempts. I don't know how some folks can use focus stacking free hand when I can't even get a clear single image!
Hi Robin, gorgeous images. Would you mind sharing the lighting set-up that you used for these shots? Thank you.
Im going to look into this lens
Definitely worth looking into
Thanks for sharing my friend. Looks like a great option especially for occasional macro.
Yeah 200% magnification is a lot!
I didn't know it was better to use it occasionally. I better stop using mine so much 😁.
Robin enjoy all your videos lots of great info
Does this lens fit an Olympus om d e m1 mark 3
Thanks again
It does
You should try the Laowa 25mm 5X Macro if you ever get a chance. While 5X magnification handheld is a mission impossible, if you don't have a tripod but at least something for the camera to lean on you can still get a decently sharp 5X image. Of course, a tripod will always be better, but just saying that it's still usable even without one.
Hello Robin, you who have often used the olympus 60 macro f2.8, which do you prefer between the two?
I have shared my thoughts in the video. Olympus 60mm is sharper, with AF. The Pergear has double the magnification of Olympus.
After tuning in to your last web chat I am supper interested in your macro thoughts now!
Looks like a great lease. If only it had AF so focus stacking could be done.
I find it almost impossible to do any stacking with the kinds of bugs I am shooting. They don't stay still, and the leaves/branches they were on also move so much due to wind! Even a light breeze can throw the whole bug out of frame.
AF isn't useful for this work, even if you're focus stacking.
your missing out. it makes focus staying so much easier. I have done both. Won't go back to manual F for this ever. @@chosenideahandle
Thank for your excellent review on Olympus. I'm french and I learned more about Olympus than in French review. Using MFT since 4 or 5 years now with Panasonic , I bought an Old EM-10 for my daughter, and what a revelation when I try It . I go to Panasonic due too review that said Olympus was not as good in video , and menu was not easy to use. When i first put my hand on EM-10 i find that every important thing was easy to use, and menu are finally more easy for me than in Nikon-Sony or Pana. So I go my self for an OM-5 and what a fantastic machine it is .
Hi Robin.Nice video again.Have the Oly 60mm f2.8 macro.I believe that lens should be fine for me as hobbiest.Small, light, full exif data etc.Only 1:1 but thats fine for me.
Of course not many people need that much magnification, but if you do, that Pergear is not a bad option, considering how lowly priced it is.
throwing a Raynox filter on that Oly lens is a nice boost as well
At my skill level, I can't see doing macro photography without auto-focus. But I'm sure that in more experienced hands, this lens will offer great results.
At larger magnification (say 100% or more) it is actually easier to do manual focus!
I think macro photography can be a great intro to complete manual shooting, you can use a tripod and work very slowly with small still objects like flowers, coins, rocks, etc.
I actually ordered this lens yesterday, excited to try it out.
AF is not useful doing macro work.
Great photos, in your opinion Which one is sharper? This one or 7artisan 60 f2.8?
The 7artisans is only 1:1 macro, and it's very soft outside the center.
Hi! You mentioned an off-camera flash technique for macro, but I can’t find that video on your channel.
Noice!
Thanks
@@robinwong you're welcome! Your videos are great 👍
Hi, I know some Olympus cameras have in camera bracketing, just wondering if you used that for some of your final photos ?
Some of the example images you show are also shown on the Amazon page for the lens. Even a picture taken with the lens on an OM-1 is clearly held by you. So they use your pictures for their advertisements on Amazon? If you want, I can send you the link by email (German Amazon).
However, the lens is displayed as unavailable.
7artisan have the same lens for cheap did you make video about extension tubes for macro etc??
No 7artisans did not have the same lens. They had a 1:1 macro, not 2:1, which basically doubles the magnification factor and makes a whole world of difference in macro.
Robin is correct, it's a very different lens (and not nearly as sharp either).
hey robin, i have just left a comment on your other video regarding the 7artisans 60mm macro lens with the meike 10mm + 16mm extension tubes for 350% magnification.. in your opinion, which lens/lens combo do you prefer for macro photography out of the 2 setups? i can get this pergear lens in the UK for £158, whereas the 7artisan 60mm f2.8 and the extension tubes totals just over £200. thank you in advance :)
I wanted to ask the same! :-)
Hey Robin, did you switch to the Canon R5 finally ??? is this a Canon reflection in the lens at 5:35 ? LOL 🙂 congratulation, hopefully an R5 vs OM1 video is in the work
Oh dear, you need to either have your eyes checked, or cut down on that weird mushrooms!
Yo where you been hiding.
I never hid. I am always around.
