I found the exact same wiring situation in my bathroom and this is the tutorial I needed! I figured it was just my crappy house but I see others have suffered the same as me 😅

Thanks for sharing. I have exact same situation. I just went and bought that same box, but was a bit concerned because there's not much room for error. In other words, the circle being cut in the drywall must be large enough to fit the box in, but if too large the box will not grip. And there seems to be only millimeters difference between the diameter of the minimum size and maximum size. Wish me luck.

Just cut the hole small, then keep trimming until it fits. It takes longer, but is the safest and easiest way as a DIY.

Thanks for the advice. I did it a couple of months ago and basically did what you said. It worked out perfectly.

I discovered the exact same "illegal" wiring situation. I am having to work around pipe and studs. Both bathrooms were wired the same! Condo builders from the 1980's got aways with a lot of "shortcuts"! 🤪🙄

unfortunately, corner cutting has nothing 2 do w/the year... it's all over the place (like in my house built in 2009).

The original fixture looks like a typical handyman install! I don't know how many times I've had to change a light fixture or ceiling fan only to find nothing was done correctly or up to code and how most handyman think a screw is a screw and don't know the difference between the different types!

was the original light fixture even installed by the code?

Honestly? I'm not sure what the code was 20+ years ago. Technically the connection between the wall electric and the lighting fixture WAS accessible (behind the light fixture) but it didn't have a box. Soo.. maybe? Even if it was up to code it certainly isn't a good idea to hang light fixtures on straight drywall.
