When designing, think ‘in 3s.’ For example, if you’re adding or replacing windows, instead of putting in pairs, put in ones or threes. 2. Don’t put sinks or cooktops in islands, especially if they have same-elevation seating. 3. Install a whole house fan in a higher floor’s ceiling to instantly remove oppressive summer heat. Often, doing that eliminates the need to turn on the AC except on the hottest days. 4. Neighbors can enhance or destroy your joy of homeownership. Start out right by taking the initiative to meet them. Maybe even take over a plate of homemade cookies! Who knows, maybe that lady next door will happen to be your son’s kindergarten teacher, or that guy could help snowblow your driveway next winter when yours breaks. Too, reciprocate. 5. Along a similar line, invite your immediate neighbors to some of your parties or other home-venue events. That way, they’ll appreciate being included, you’ll connect your social circles, and they’ll be more understanding of the noise and overspill parking.
They were all the rage when we built in 1989. First two times my grandfather was over he fell on the step up! Now as a senior citizen myself this was a concern enough for me that we recently remodeled our first floor and had both the sunken living room and family room floors raised to the same level as the rest of the house.

Sunken living rooms look cool, however they are very dangerous . people miss the step and they are not a good idea for people aging.

Yes. I think they make the kitchen feel great and it’s usually a nice upgrade. I think it’s worth doing for sure.
