Fright Knights were my favorite ones ever. I saved chore money for a long time to buy the main castle for myself and my little bro. I really prefer these original designs over the totally merchandised / franchised themes that are available today (i.e. Harry Potter, Minecraft, various superheroes, Star Wars..). I sent a Fright Knight themed original tower photo to Lego Magazine back in the day, but they didn't pick it. Fun times playing Legos with my bro. I was surprised to hear the video say that people didn't like Fright Knights when I had really liked them.
My favorite set from this theme was the Witch's Windship. That's literally one of the most unique concepts for a fantasy vehicle I have ever seen, and I love it for that.
I heartily disagree with your defense of the build quality on these sets. "It was 1997" is no excuse when everything pre-1994 was so much better. Big wall elements were the bread and butter of castle since '84. BURPs were implemented beautifully in Wolfpack sets from '92 and '93. Beginning with the dragon masters, we began to see more and more BURPs, wall elements, portcullises, and raised baseplates that simply looked out of place. The problem isn't the parts you see; it's the ones left out which could have completed these sets. That said, I have full respect for what your defense of Fright Knights as a theme; glad you enjoy them and share it!
I remember my parents taking me into a brick and mini figs store as a surprise for my 13th birthday. Lo and behold, there stood the Night Lord’s Castle up on the highest shelf, albeit without the dragon. Still a fun memory and it started my journey to collect classic castle sets. Great for minifig collections to be sure.
I've been planning to turn my fright knights moc into an ideas set. When I was doing my research i was surprised to see one of my mocs in your thumbnail! I love your builds and i'd love to do a colab either in terms of building something, or a youtube video.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I have added your Instagram to the description. I would be interested in a collaboration as well, shoot me a message here and let's work something out! instagram.com/_bb202_/?hl=en
Willa's Windship will always hold a special place in my heart, as it was the first LEGO set I sat down and made without anyone else to help me. Physics or practicality be damned. Also yes, I really did like that the Fright Knights were unabashedly Halloween bad guys for the castle theme. Sometimes it's just fun playing the cartoon villain in the story.
I didn't collect much of the Fright Knights as I didn't like the style of their castles and vehicles. However, I ADORED the concept, being an avid Dungeons and Dragons player. I actually felt it didn't go far enough with the fantasy themes. Witches, Skeletons....why not a vampire? Or a Mr. Hyde type guy? Werewolf, zombies, Frankenstein style monster, hunchback...Fright Knights could have had all this and more!!! So much potential!
The Fright knights came at the time when lego sales where whining down and the started experimenting with different themes. Also Frights didn't get an opposite theme to fight like previous castle themes. I see some the sets have a dark forest man lurking around Royal Lion knights captured 😋
I really like fright knights. The color scheme is menacing and fit very well to theme and the minifigs are excellent. I guess many do not like fright knights because they are not realistic. But do they really have to be realistic to be good sets? I think not. The magic manor is a bit too blocky, I agree. If the sets with an exception of the night lord's castle would have been designed with the style of dragon masters they would have been even better.
As a kid I felt it was awesome! And I loved the background art on the sets boxes and instructions. I only got the little set with the witch and the stove as a kid. One day I really want to add the Nightlord's Castle to my collection. The theme had some negatives and some positives but all in all it's not as bad as its reputation.
I have to admit, I don't mind the BURPs and LURPs. I know they're kinda bulky and hard to use in smaller sets, but they're a great way to bulk out larger terrain builds without having to worry so much about structural integrity. And I swear if anyone claims it's cheating to do that, I will bury them alive in BURPs and LURPs. There's nothing wrong with using a piece for what it's good for, and just because you could make them from smaller pieces doesn't mean you always should. A lot of AFOLs forget that these sets were originally targeted at kids, and these larger pieces streamlined building complex terrain and made the resulting model sturdier. If you want to upgrade them with brick-built terrain then by all means go ahead, more power to you.
Some good points here! There's a happy medium for using BURPs or brick builds, and I think Lego is getting closer to finding it. They're putting big, pre-fab pieces in the 4+ sets now, and adding more detail than ever to the "adult-oriented" sets. There is such a thing as too much detail, don't get me wrong, and I appreciate the charm that BURPs sometimes offer. Thanks for your comment!
I remember getting the Witch's Windship when I was a kid. :) A few years ago, I managed to find an incomplete Nightlord's Castle, completing it with pieces from my brick hoard.
I really liked Fright Knights, and still do! My Bat Lord's Castle had two parts bags mixed up: I got two of the bag that had the minifigures, and another bag was missing. There was only one of the missing parts that I didn't have in my collection, and the extra minifigs were nice to have, so I didn't return it. About a year later I got a correct one on clearance, 30% off I think. So I have two! Sort of...
First Lego set ever Basil and his black dragon very small set but my mom picked it up for me cause I liked dragons. Was about 2005 when I obtained it so must have sat on the shelf for years
I disliked Frigh tKnights at first, mostly because they replaced my favourite Dragon Knights, but then I got a couple of sets for birthday and started to get into that creepy vibe. They weren't bad, they were just different. And I prefer fantasy themed knights to the early historical ones. Also I have no problems with "burps" and the stuff like that.
I see the art for the Magic Manor being less of a castle and more a pile of rocks. The image depicts them in the mountains (looks like Cappadocia) at some kind of, ruin whether it natural or man made... I love it and never got why people hated on it so hard lol
I guess to some people it's a wonderful mess while to others it makes our heads hurt haha. I get where you're coming from but I feel like they could have done a better job executing the concept
@@BB2O2 As an adult, I understand it's lack of displayability, unless you were unashamed by that which is Fright Knights lol, but putting yourself back into 1997, it ruled.
I remember this shit in 1997! It was sucha a disappointing fraction in lego castle :( After King Leo and Lion knights with their 6090 in 1995 (such a fantastic year in my life) huge beautiful castle we got this abomination of lego castle! For me they look like designed by total idiot from parts left from someone competent :))))
It is not really a subset I like much. Bit I think there are worse LEGO castle subsets. For me it really went downhill in 1995 and didn't really recover until the few sets of the last few years. I think the Kingdoms sets are a short revival and the Medieval Market Village before that. By the way, Fright Knights were introduced at the time I was moving away from LEGO. I had a few small sets, but didn't own the bigger sets. I had a lot of the pre 1995 castle LEGO, starting from the early 80ies.
That's my friend The Brick Stop, not me! I've linked his Instagram in the description of this video, shoot him a message there if you want. Thanks for watching!
Hey! I just made a LEGO stop motion that is kind of an origin story for Basil, and I would appreciate it if you could watch it since you’re the expert on the fright knights lol.
I think the main castle is the best piece and everything else is worse and often bad, excluding the small sets which have their own quirks and peculiarities (and sell better just because of their price point).
@BB202 I think they would be a great candidate. I think it would be cool to see a modernized set for each of the classic Castle factions....the Lion Knights castle last year was such a great set. Got me wishing for a new Wolfpack, Black Knights, Fright Knights, etc etc
@@jimmyt7233 For sure! Who knows, maybe one of those factions will pop up in the medieval village set if it comes out. Couldn't really tell from the pictures

Ahh my dad bought me the set from the gas station! I loved this series
Those were the days! Cheap army builders

Funny, we couldn't be farther apart on that, but agree that it was underrated haha

True! Wish they could have had a worthy opponent, or what else Lego could have explored with the theme. Thanks for watching!

still have some pieces from magic manor. Can't believe I've had it this long. Fright Knights and Western are some of my favs

Good video. I recently purchased the castle looks really good no complaints.

Thanks for sharing - that's quite a bizarre find! Always nice to get some extra minifgures especially
Good news: CMF 25 (Out in January) will include Basil the Batlord himself (And a bunch of other medieval-friendly Minifigs, including a goat!)
That's great news! Thanks for watching

We need castle sets again
I looooved fright knights. last theme i was into before moving on from lego. maybe i was just a spooky kid lol
Check out Monster Fighters or Hidden Side if you haven't already! Two of Lego's better spooky themes
I would say that forestmen is probably in the list
For the first skit, I had in my head, "I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky" followed by the Wilhelm scream..
Before Lego Batman, i used that bat helmet to make a custom Batman.

What about the Dacta castle set (number) 9376? It was kinda like those vip add on themed packs.
I always loved the spooky pseudo gothic aesthetic, as questionable as some of the "fort/castle" designs in the theme were
Do you think they'd be able to improve the builds if they took another shot at the theme?
To me the weakness of Fright Knights is a lack of an enemy faction in the theme

R.I.P
It wasn't my favorite theme, but it did have black dragons.
I'm not into Castle theme but Dragon Master and Fright Knights are the best Castle subthemes for me 😊
Catle without a dragon is lame 😜
Istead of black dragon they should go with big bad bat figure brick built
Not fully confirmed but you heard that lego castle won the 90th anniversary results
Idk why but it look like vlad the impaler the batlord one

The Fright knight Castle, was quite a downgrade from the 6090 Royal Knights Castle , and earlier Castle sets .
Small sets are boring, 6087 is simply atrocious, 6097 is on of the best lego sets ever
The builds for Fright Knights were atrocious. The aesthetic of the Fright Knights is great though
Do you think they'd be able to do them more justice with a modern update? They're the perfect candidate in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
