It was nice during the night, but we're wimps at night. 40F is cold for us. I want my 118F degree summers.
Good work. At some point with that much gear you may have to think about reintroducing a bicycle of some sort. Perhaps an ebike with rollup PV panels. In your terrain no flat tires would probably be a good move.
Winter Field Day was good here. We ran 2I. One station ran phone on 15m. The other station mostly ran CW on 20m.
I kept picturing the 1O stations up north on a frozen lake in an ice fishing tent.
We had chamber of commerce weather on the Space Coast. The door of the church youth building stayed open.
We only had the building for Saturday so when we started getting duplicates a little after 1700L we rolled everything up to avoid doing it in the dark.
We had great time. 3lbs of bacon and a couple dozen chili dogs with time on an FT-710. Its an amazing receiver and very intuitive to navigate.
I'll take bacon over rabbit any day of the week.

I've tested this on the fat tire e-bike, but it is awkward with this much gear. The plan is to cut a little more weight and just do more training.
It would be interesting to see how you are making your bags. Material, zippers sewing etc.

It's time to cut a few pounds. If not, more training is needed. The 16 gauge was about 9 pounds of that weight. I wish I went with 20 gauge instead.

Your go bags are so nice! Great job! A very honest feedback, something I believe everyone watching is thinking but nobody tells you. Watch your video and count how many times you say “TTP”. At this point we understand that this is not content, instead it’s an ad for your products. I hope it’s working for you, but maybe the ad would be more effective if it was more subtle. Example: instead of ttp antenna, ttp backpack, ttp breathing air you just presented everything normally and then at the end you’d just say “if you’re interested in any of this gear, you can get it in my store”.
Americans are very welcoming of ads disguised as content. But other cultures are not. In my culture people create aversion when you do it. Just by changing your tactics you could broaden your consumer base.
Actually, I don't sell my products publicly anymore since everything is handmade. They were only sold in very small batches last year to members. In fact I am no longer producing any of the bags moving forward as it was one heck of a financial loss. There was no way to keep up with the demand. I appreciate the feedback. The mentions were simply to cut down on the constant comments and emails asking: "what antenna was that?". I'll mention the brand less. Thanks.

Looked like my Boy Scout mess kit frying pan at the beginning. Been a while since I had that out.
I can't recall which country's armed forces this mess kit came from, but it works pretty well...and they are inexpensive ($5-10 USD) compared to the high end gear at REI. Give it a try.
I'm kinda new to the hobby, I messed with CB a bunch when I was a kid back in the 80s and still have a bunch of stuff packed away.
I've messed with small handheld GMRS radios the past few years.
I'm now trying to move into more powerful GMRS and HAM and learn all this new stuff.
Anyway.
For my first radio I'm building a manpack type setup so it can be fully mobile and I can get the most use out of it.
I'm having lots of trouble understanding antennas, size, tuning, what I need, what I don't need.
I'll have a 25w dual band.
I've watched a bunch of your videos recently and could sure use what knowledge you have learned in your journey.
Should I use 2 separate antenna?

Right now I am working on a manpack myself (significantly heavier than your setups, the equipment wasn't my selection but what I got in a good deal that was all or nada). I need to focus on some weight reduction. I have a couple shorts posted with some of the gear, all of it was bargain hunted. Thank you for sharing your content, it really does motivate me to work on my projects more. Keep it up!

Love your content. Unrelated question here I'd like to get a digital scanner but they're around 500$ can a dmr be used instead. Or do I just need a analog scanner to have a heads up on a local level.

i wish i got more footage from our field day event. im just starting out with a new camera and got some b roll and missed some opportunity to get some great a- roll footage, all in the learning process !!!
I've done that, too. Just film new footage at the shack and overlay the b roll. I have a video format where I'll start by talking about the plan, the event and then reflect on what went well and what went sideways. Lastly, I'll share the lessons learned. Which camera?
thats cool ill write that down as a basic frame work to keep in mind !! i got the osmo pocket 3 creator package, great system !! a little spendy but its half the price of what i was planning on spending for a basic content creation package. next on my list to do is set up one of my desks as camera station with a versa style arm so i can mount a downward looking camera for a desk shot and a couple other spots for cammeras/lights or whatever.@@TheTechPrepper

It all works. Eat what you can. These days, I am trying to make these outings a bit more challenging. It's nice have an x-factor or two on each trip. Other than the bread, we did not pack a meal for breakfast. The goal was to find something to eat in the field or go hungry.
@@TheTechPrepper that's a tough goal. Historically people would bring something like pemican and hardtack or veggies to add to whatever they caught (or to make sad soup if they get nothing) even if it was just enough to not starve. If you manage to walk into the dessert with no food and eat comfortably that's quite an achievement.

I'm a new ham. I have built a FT-857D manpack. I programmed it with local repeater info using chirp. Out of thirteen repeaters I programmed into the radio, seven of them display TX ERROR when I key the mic on them. Nowhere in the instruction manual is there a listing for an error like this, and no troubleshooting info. I have tried with no luck to contact a member of the local ham club, so I'm taking a long shot to see if you might be able to help since I know you used FT-857 at one time. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
I'm trying to use a lightweight system consisting of a TalentCell battery, (tr)uSDX transceiver, ATU-10 tuner and some kind of wire antenna suitable for NVIS. Will all fit easily into one of those 5.11 6.6 pouches. The weak link so far is the computer. I'm using a MS Surface Go 2, but it's heavy and awkward to use in the field. Do you think that Panasonic rugged tablet is the way to go? BTW, I tried using a QDX on Winter Field Day and it was a fail. Still don't know what was going wrong, but only putting out 3 watts on 20m digital isn't a good start when bands are crowded. Disappointing.
If you need a small field computer that is rugged, I recommend getting an FZ-M1 MkII on the secondary market along with a new iKey keyboard. I paid $400 for the pair 1 year ago, but prices have climbed since then. The tablets used to run about $100 USD used in good condition.
@@TheTechPrepper Thanks. It weighs about the same as the MS Surface Go 2 (1.2 lb) but looks a lot more suitable for field use. Would be good to get the one with onboard GPS.
What tablet is that and how is it in bright sun? My IC-705 works great as a field radio but my tablet is weak in bright sun.
It's FZ-M1 MkII with the iKey keyboard. It's only has a 500 nit display, but it works out here in the desert. A 700 nit display would have been great. I have a Dell 7220 ruggedized tablet that pushes insane brightness at 1000-nit.
I want to bring up a question on jscall and similar programs for shtf coms during grid down. I see a major Achilles heel here and no one seems to have addressed it. For js8 and wsjtx to work properly they all have to be perfectly in sync on time. What happens during grid down where there is no internet and u can’t sync the time. I’ve noticed my laptop after about a week will be off by a few seconds and that stops js8 call from working properly. Do you have a solution for this problem ? My thought maybe something like Starlink or sat phone that can hook up to pc to sync time but that’s expensive and also assuming it’s operational .
Yes, there is an auto time drift tool in JS8Call that will synchronize the timing based on one or more heard signals. I use this all the time in the field.

Yes, it did. It's simplex. This is straight HF communication.

Interesting. How do you make your own pouches? Materials? Sewing machine? Design? I’m interested in how you do that.
I misspoke. I do all the design and a have neighbor down the street that makes these based on my specs. These are in Coyote Tan using 440 denier material. The square pouches were all included in all of the wire antennas I sold last year.
