Because we listen and understand so well in our mother tongue, we hate it that we can't understand what we hear in English. So we use subtitles. To learn to listen though, we have to turn them off and listen without understanding. Or I should say, we listen until we understand. Try listening to short clips 10-15 minutes not a complete movie. Find things that you can understand 60-70%. Then let your brain figure out the 30-40%. It's a bit scarey. Like getting rid of training wheels on a bicycle. Or a flotation board when you learn to swim. But it is absolutely essential if you want to become a great listener - which will improve your fluency. How you hear English determines how you speak English ! You have to do it. When you have a face to face conversation, you can't ask the speaker to turn on the subtitles. They are OFF.
