    It’s this kind of discussion and analysis that sets this channel apart from anything else. This is technical, but practical, unlike ASR which seems singularly focused on SINAD only.

    Poes blowing this out is a very good sign. It means he is truly testing the limits of performance. I would expect no less from Audioholics.

    • @PoesAcoustics
      @PoesAcoustics 9 месяцев назад

      Hah. Yes we do yes the limits.
      The test was really really hard on the amp and I’ve done this before. Basically 2/3 of its channels is loaded with 4 ohm loads and continuous pure tones are sent through it at ever higher levels. The thing that killed it was that I turned it off, raises the level more than I intended to because I had to use the receiver volume control, and when I turned the tone generator back on, it was basically hit with a massive signal rapidly. It was too much too quick for the protection circuit and it killed the amp.
      A very heavy duty amplifier died a similar death a few years back, so it’s really not a knock on the Sony in the slightest.

  • @DJMT-Africa

    I own one of these - installed it last week. Being a longstanding Sony AVR customer, I am not unhappy. My only major issues are a lack of HDR10+ support, a rather dim LCD display screen, a dated physical design, no QMS, no QFT, and it runs really hot (resolved that with an AC Infinity Aircom T10 cooler).
    On the plus side, the receiver sounds amazing, is easy to setup, has a decent app, and can be fully controlled via a web browser.
    It does have dual subwoofer outputs, but only one subwoofer channel.
    I use Sony's Centre Lift feature, where the Front TH (top height) speakers are mixed in with the centre channel to make it seem like dialogue is coming from the screen, for those of us that do not use projectors. It works really well, and gives a great balance to all centre channel content, considering my centre speaker is at the bottom of my wall unit.

    • @lilflip0325
      @lilflip0325 9 месяцев назад

      By using the center channel lift, does that make it seem louder when compared to just using the center channel itself?

    • @DJMT-Africa
      @DJMT-Africa 9 месяцев назад

      @@lilflip0325 Not so much louder as it does more balanced. It is like a more even distribution of dialogue across the entire panel, which then provides the illusion of being both louder and clearer at the same time, but really, more balanced all around. It is definitely worth enabling.
      Center Lift is actually not new from Sony. They first debuted it on the STR-DA5800ES, which released in 2012. That was a 9.2-channel AVR which came with Front Height speakers. Those Front Heights could be assigned to Center Lift, and it worked really well there too.

      I have the STR-DH770 and it’s been great for 7 years. It only cost $300 and has next to no features but has been great no meaningful issues to report. Occasional HDMI handshake issues but that happens with just about anything these days. Oh… the Bluetooth connectivity is a hit or miss. I never use it anymore though, I have no reason too. Probably nothing special, but I was impressed with the lack of hiss on this Sony when I first bought it. My old receiver had a white noise when nothing was playing. It was kind of annoying that you could hear it across the room. The cheap Sony is damn near silent. I would like to upgrade to the AZ3000ES but it lacks features. But wouldn’t hesitate to based on how my cheap one has been.

      I have a Sony STR-AZ5000ES (since March) and 360SSM is very very noisy. Mine actually blew a fuse after an insanely loud pop. Within a week it had to go back to the Sony authorized repair center for issues with HDMI signal.
      I am keeping my STR-AZ5000ES but I no longer use the speaker relocation feature, the 360SSM, nor the calibration (front, engineer nor flat). Even without those features, the STR-AZ5000ES is the best sound quality in any previous receiver I have ever owned, for both 2 channel music, or 5.1.4 movies.
      My speakers are not super expensive, Martin Logan Foundation F2, and to me, the combination of Martin Logan and Sony receiver is impressive.

    Looking forward to hearing more about the room correction performance.
    I don't get why "spatial mapping" is such a niche thing though. We who spend thousands of dollars on high end receivers / processors certainly wouldn't mind doing manual measurements of where our speakers are placed and just enter those numbers so that the processor could correct for any mismatch between ours and the ideal placement. That type of correction should be a basic feature of all Atmos/ DTS:X / Auro processors.

Hiss, loud popping noises and random boot loops are just a few of the complaints. It’s a shame as those who have had units that work fine rave about the sound quality and the added spaciousness of the 360SSM tech. @@Audioholics so off the top of my head of what I can remember, at let’s say volume -20, the 360 mapping seemed to make the speakers sound further away but made the dynamics sound compressed, so I’d turn up the volume then the hiss would become very noticeable. With it turned off, the dynamics would be very good and the speakers seemed to disappear and objects in the movie mix were where you think they should be relative to the screen(better than my NAD t778), also I could turn the volume up to -10/-8 without any noticeable hiss. @Audioholics for how long? I'll grant you that it's unusual that a modern receiver like that can actually meet its specifications all channels driven. But the power supply and the heat sink in that thing are too small to do it for very long. Set it running at full power with sine wave signals on all channels and walk away. But keep the fire extinguisher handy because in about 5 minutes you're going to need it.

    One of the features he said he didn’t know what it is, another he said it probably doesn’t do anything. If I was Sony I would be really disappointed with this coverage.

    Tonewinner subwoofers! Big promises from a single RUclipsr who looks to be bought out. I'm dying for feedback from a trustworthy source

    When you start talking about hiss it starts coming out of your mouth! Must be your microphone as i do not have this problem otherwise 😀

      I have a STR-AZ5000ES and the hiss is very real snd annoying if you use 360SSM. I just don’t use it. Without 360SSM the receiver sounds pretty good!

    Who cares how it measures? How it sounds is 100% more important, smh.

    In the future, try out all the features before you make a review on a product and go “I heard it’s good” 😂
