The thing with Hulk is he is a sympathetic character. When Bruce transforms, Hulk is his own being and really wants to be left alone and doesn’t hurt anyone that are innocent. However, he has to fight whoever is attacking him whether it’s the army, villains, and even heroes because they all believe he is a monster but tries to do good. Stan Lee based him off of the Frankenstein monster in that they are misunderstood and treated poorly by everyone.

I'm sorry to be such a bad nerd but. Umm actually. You are right the Hulk is his own character in that he is a fragmented part of Banners psyche. When Banner was a child he and his mother were brutally abused by his father and while I'm pretty sure he never developed full blown MPD, the serum did bring forth the Green Hulk persona. The green hulk persona being the physical representation of unchecked nuclear power (a huge fear at the time the original comics were being made) as well as being paired with the Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde type of character trope.
I would full well love to say that Hulk never fought anyone good but even Stan Lee has said that as a result of his wild rages he was often depicted as the peoples hero in one comic only to be enemy #1 in the next weeks. Even in this movie at General Ross tracks Bruce's episodes by the reports and body counts. Collateral damage is a very big thing with the hulk as he takes down entire buildings when he fights. But through it all even with General Ross hunting him across the world and never being able to rest because of one bad guy or another the person Hulk hates most is Banner. "Puny Banner" "Weak Banner" Because he couldn't protect himself or his mother when his father killed his mother. And Banner hates Hulk the most because he fears him and quite frankly he, barring magical and even then that's iffy, can't die, but the body count keeps climbing and the ghosts in the closet never get any quieter.

@@mystchevious1129 Sorry to be even nerdier, but...
Bruce has full-blown DID (which hasn't been called MPD since 1994). Dr. Leonard Sampson, the guy Betty's dating in this movie, addresses the condition at length in the comics, most notably in Immortal Hulk. Each Hulk he turns into is its own identity, with Big Guy being the most well-known. Also, it's not that hard to kill them, especially if they're in Bruce's body at the time. He definitely dies at least once in the MCU (the bridge), probably died jumping out of the helicopter in this movie, and there's a possible past death mentioned in Avengers. The thing is, when a gamma mutate dies, they're able to walk back out of super-hell and come back to life. Bruce is willing to accept death, but the others aren't, which is why he almost always comes back either as Big Guy or Devil.

The reason Buce becomes the Hulk so fast -- in the opening credits sequence! -- is because this was the second MCU movie and they still weren't sure the MCU would be successful. So this film is written as a semi-sequel to Ang Lee's Hulk (2003), but with a different cast. In fact, it used to be possible to buy a DVD double feature that included Hulk (2003) and Incredible Hulk (2008).
That movie covers the origin of the Hulk and the opening sequence basically recaps the events of that movie -- though the origin was changed slightly to reference the Hulk television series (1977-1982), just to make things even more confusing. Hulk (2003) ends with Bruce Banner in hiding in South America, so this movie begins with Bruce in hiding in South America.

    • @wolfofthewest8019
      @wolfofthewest8019 2 года назад +14

Also, another thing I do like about this movie is that they don't make Leonard (Ty Sheridan's character, Bettie's current boyfriend) a bad guy, which is so easy and typical when you have a love triangle. Yes, he calls in the military and narcs on Bruce, but he does it out of genuine concern for Bettie's safety and clearly recognizes he was wrong. It's strongly implied by the later films that Bettie goes back to Leonard after this movie. And, decent, understanding man that he is, he probably takes her back.

@@wolfofthewest8019 Well Ty Sheridan plays Leonard as you say, that character is supposed to be Doc Sampson who also gets gamma-induced powers and hulk like strength in the comics. Just like The Leader, they were setting up for future Hulk solo movies that just never happened. Which is too bad. I would have loved to see Ty Sheridan and Edward Norton teaming up against the Leader (who probably kidnaps Betty to lure Hulk into a death trap or something). I dunno, would have been cool.

Hulk was supposed to have a bigger role in the Avengers. Marvel thought they had Norton/Tyler pretty much until Endgame. Who would turn down the kind of money they were going to throw at them? Edward Norton, that's who (commonly said to be one of the hardest actors to work with in Hollywood). Lol. After Norton said he was only doing 1 film, they had to find a replacement (Ruffalo) and put Hulk on the back burner while giving Spiderman and Thor more prominent roles. At least that's my understanding of the entire character design change once Ruffalo took over to "smart Hulk"...
Norton himself is a big Hulk fan, and read the comics as a kid. He played the character as close to the comic as he could. He wanted to do an additional 2 "dark" Hulk films (think a Hulk trilogy like The Dark Knight with Christian Bale). The studio wouldn't back him. Norton wanted an enormous budget, for a very "risky" high concept film. They wouldn't give him what he wanted because it cost too much, and gave him too much control, so he walked.
"In 2010, shortly before announcing The Avengers at the San Diego Comic Con, Feige released a statement clarifying why Norton was let go. “Our decision is definitely not based on monetary factors,” Feige said, “but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members.”
In response, Norton’s agent said in a statement that Feige initially wanted the actor to continue playing the Hulk, and that the decision to let him go “seemed to us to be a financial decision.” He called Feige’s comments “mean-spirited, unprofessional, disingenuous, and clearly defamatory.”"
Imagine if they'd just let Edward Norton do whatever he wanted for 2 more "Dark Knight" styled films. This was "Batman Begins"...

10:53 The man with Betty is Dr. Leonard Samson. In the comics, he did work on a way to separate Bruce from the Hulk. While working closely together, he and Betty did become close. Leonard did expose himself to Gamma radiation and became a green-haired muscleman. Bruce was feeling abandoned by Betty and tried to commit suicide by detonating the device holding the purged radiation, which only allowed the mindless Hulk to escape.
In order to end the mindless rampage, Doc Samson had to help fight the Hulk and get Banner and Hulk merged again. In the comics, this allowed Banner to become known eventually as the green-skinned Professor Hulk after a long time as grey-skinned "Joe Fix-It" working in Las Vegas.

In the *Agents of SHIELD* tv show they explain that Abomination was placed in suspended animation and kept at a facility called The Icebox. Later (I'd explain how, but its a major spoiler) he escapes and he was last seen in *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,* where he is participating in superhuman underground fighting. He's supposed to appear in the upcoming She-Hulk series.
Samuel Sterns, the doctor who "cures" Bruce, is a character from the comics called *The Leader.* The comic book character has a giant, oversized brain in a massive head and green skin as a result of exposure to gamma radiation (which gave the comic book Hulk his powers), and is sort of the opposite of the Hulk -- where as gamma radiation made Hulk super-strong, it made the Leader super-smart. He's a super scientist who can read people's minds and control them telepathically. So in this movie, when the Hulk juice drips into Stern's head wound and his head starts bubbling and expanding, that's the origin story of the MCU's Leader. This character has never appeared again, not even a mention. One of several dangling plot lines of the MCU.
Also, there's a one-shot short film in which it's revealed that SHIELD actually wanted to recruit the Abomination for the Avengers, but Phil Coulson thought this was a terrible idea (and it is), so he sends Tony knowing that Tony's ego and smarmy personality will rub Ross the wrong way and make him refuse to cooperate.

Though this is the only Hulk movie with Edward Norton in the role, it is still effectively canon to the MCU, as later films do reference events and characters in this movie. For example, in one of the Avengers films, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner mentions how he "broke Harlem", alluding to this film's climactic fight.
There are varying stories behind Norton's departure, though it is believed that Norton wanted to be more creatively involved in this film, and it's said that he even involved himself in rewriting portions of the film while shooting. Apparently, this upset Marvel Studios, as they wanted to maintain as much of their creative control going forward as they could. That's understandable when you consider how interconnected the MCU films are and how much planning is required to make sure all the dots connect from movie to movie. So rather than deal with this issue going forward, they recast Norton with Ruffalo.

24:33 Samuel Stern being exposed to Gamma contamination sets his origin as The Leader. Instead of muscle, he develops mental power. He is one of the main villains of the Hulk. If the movie had been greenlit for a sequel [no pun intended], he was set up as a future antagonist.
The distribution requirement for standalone Hulk movies was ironclad through Universal Studios. Marvel Studios would pay the development costs up front, but Universal got the lion's share of the gate. If the Hulk was used in a team, or even a team-up, he could be used by Marvel Studios in the movies, or used without reservation in television, video games, etc.

And as much as I love Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner aka the Hulk, I did really enjoy Edward Norton in this movie. I don't remember the exact reason for the recast, but I THINK that Edward Norton wanted more creative say. Not 100% sure on what really happened.
Next up in the MCU: "Iron Man 2".

24:33 Samuel Sterns mutating into the villain he is in the comics, The Leader. Unfortunately, this movie underperformed and the Leader plot was shelved. And since we haven't had a Hulk solo project in 14 years, that's unlikely to change. Unless they address it in the "She-Hulk" show, maybe. I don't know, just a fool's hope, I guess.

Hey, Addie! "Incredible Hulk" is often considered a disposable MCU film because nothing comes of it except for General Ross' character carrying over into future chapters in the saga but I quite enjoy it. I felt Edward Norton was an ideal casting choice for Banner. Despite the wonderful turn by Mark Ruffalo, who is later cast in the part, I would have loved to see Norton follow through on the character especially knowing how it all plays out. It's interesting to note how Hulk's publication history has mirrored his filmography. Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and nuclear fears, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby tried to replicate the success they had in 1961 with the Fantastic Four's most popular member, Ben Grimm aka The Thing, by creating a new sympathetic monster in 1962. Originally colored an ashen gray before settling on green, the misunderstood goliath only starred in six issues of "The Incredible Hulk" before being cancelled. He was given a second chance in 1964 in the anthology title "Tales to Astonish" which he shared with Ant-Man until he finally graduated to his own title in 1968. Likewise, Hulk's origin film from 2003 was the first failed attempt at establishing a shared cinematic universe until the character was revisited just five years later in 2008 in the wake of the runaway success of "Iron Man".
Louis Leterrier, director of the "Transporter" films, delivers a fun, fast-paced movie with some terrific 'Hulk Smash'-ing action against the classic villain Abomination! There are fun nods to the comics not least of which is Hulk's facial appearance which is a Mike Deodato illustration come to life! After Ruffalo is cast, Hulk takes on the actor's appearance. Other touches include Betty buying Bruce purple pants, the powerful wind-blast of the Hulk Clap, the correspondence with Mr. Blue from the Bruce Jones run and the stormy cave sequence lifted from writer Jeph Loeb and illustrator Tim Sale's "Hulk: Gray" limited series. A spiritual successor to the popular TV series of the late '70's-early '80's, the film references the show's most quotable line when Norton mistranslates into Portuguese "You won't like me when I'm hungry." when he actually means "You won't like me when I'm angry."
Any confusion at the start of the film stems from NOT seeing "Hulk" (2003) by Ang Lee before seeing "Incredible Hulk" (2008). The Ang Lee Hulk was the aborted first attempt at an MCU and "Incredible" picks up where "Hulk" ends! The two films were made just five years apart so the MCU Hulk film barely covers the ORIGIN which is what the non-canon film is about. The five-year time difference is even reflected in the "Incredible Hulk" narrative as further acknowledgement of its predecessor. The earlier movie has problems but also tremendous merit and utilizes a comic-book-panel visual style. It features more accurate circumstances surrounding the gamma accident, Bruce's troubled relationship with his abusive father and classic clashes with the Army in the American Southwest never seen in any other film in which the character appears. Ang Lee is a major talent and his filmography is extraordinarily diverse with films like Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility", wuxia like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", historical dramas like "Ride with the Devil", romantic dramas like "Brokeback Mountain", existential journeys like "Life of Pi" and action films like "Gemini Man". The cast includes Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliot, Josh Lucas and Nick Nolte. It is NON-CANON but connected enough that some MCU fans like myself include it in the chronology.
Typical of a Marvel production, the replacement cast was equally brimming with talent. Edward Norton as Bruce Banner aka Hulk had a passion for the part with his slender frame, palpable intelligence and haunted angst lending itself perfectly to the role. The lovely Liv Tyler brings warmth and longing to Betty Ross that is quite affecting. She and Norton had great chemistry together. In yet another Marvel casting coup, the great William Hurt portrays the obsessive General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Tim Roth rabidly sinks his teeth into Emil Blonsky aka Abomination with an ever-present slight snarl on his face. Tim Blake Nelson as the helpful scientist Samuel Sterns receives a gamma drip into an open head wound resulting in a bubbling, bulging cranium as the set-up for his transformation into the classic Hulk villain, The Leader, a gamma-powered super-genius with an elongated flattop for a head! Unfortunately, it's an MCU plot thread that never gets picked up as this was the last solo Hulk film due to Universal owning the film distribution rights to the character in standalone projects. Ty Burrell plays Betty's rebound psychiatrist boyfriend Leonard Samson who, in the comics, is another member of the gamma family. He can control his abilities, however, and serves the superhero community as a therapist of sorts. Paul Soles plays avuncular pizzeria owner Stanley who shelters Bruce and Martin Starr plays a Culver University computer nerd in a clever Spider-Man Easter Egg to be elaborated upon later. Jiu-Jitsu Grandmaster and famed MMA fighter Rickson Gracie portrays a Brazilian martial arts instructor who teaches Bruce some impressive breathing techniques and ravishing Brazilian TV star Debora Nascimento plays Bruce's tempting neighbor and bottling plant co-worker. In bit parts, Peter Mensah plays a General, Chris Owens of "The X-Files" plays a commando, Pedro Salvin plays a favela bully and Wayne Robson plays a New Jersey boat captain. Blink and you'll miss the amazing Michael Kenneth Williams as a terrified Harlem bystander. Lastly, the sole holdover from the 2003 film and the original green goliath, Lou Ferrigno, provides the Hulk's voice.
    TRIVIA:
    1. Then-Mayor of Toronto, David Miller, was such a Hulk fan that he lobbied aggressively to have the production film in his city by offering irresistible financial concessions.
    2. Edward Norton re-wrote much of the script and even directed some scenes but is uncredited for those contributions.
    3. The events of "Iron Man 2", "The Incredible Hulk" and "Thor" all occur during one week in MCU-time called Fury's Big Week!
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. The SUPER-SOLDIER SERUM General Ross injects Blonsky with is the one used to transform Captain America in World War II. This is a reference best understood by seeing the films chronologically. The results differ because the serum is meant to be administered in conjunction with exposure to a form of radiation called 'vita-rays'.
    2. The bespectacled university student with the pizza slice is played by Martin Starr who later appears as the high school teacher, Mr. Harrington, in the Spider-Man movies. Kevin Feige confirmed the student is Harrington working on his education degree.
    3. The "Lonely Man" theme from the TV series is heard while a ragged Banner shuffles through the streets of Chiapas, Mexico.
    4. The late Bill Bixby, who played Banner on the TV series, is seen in a clip from another TV series he worked on called "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" as Edward Norton flips through channels on the television in his favela apartment.
    CAMEOS:
    1. Lou Ferrigno, who played the Hulk to Bill Bixby's Banner on TV in the '70's and '80's, is the security guard who accepts the pizza.
    2. Stan Lee is the Milwaukee gent who took a sip of gamma-laced soda pop! He's in the non-MCU Ang Lee "Hulk", too, as a security guard chatting with his partner played by none other than Lou Ferrigno!
    END-CREDIT SCENE:
    1. Tony Stark approaches a drunk General Ross about the Avengers Initiative but the true purpose of the meeting is actually revealed in the Marvel One-Shot "The Consultant".
"Iron Man 2" occurs chronologically before this movie as it sets up the end-credit scene with Ross and features a clip of the Culver University rampage on a holoscreen. The next chronological stop in the MCU is a featurette called a One-Shot that occurs at the end of "The Incredible Hulk". "The Consultant" provides some surprising context to Stark's barroom chat with Ross and introduces SHIELD Agent Jasper Sitwell played by Maximiliano Hernandez. It is found on the "Thor" blu-ray and D+.

This is honestly the best Hulk portrayal in the MCU. Norton wanted to continue exploring the dark themes in this film because he liked where it was going, and Marvel was at first all about it, but then they did a 180 and said "lol no, we're making him comic relief", so he left the project. This is why Mark Ruffalo plays Banner in the later films.
The Hulk is a manifestation of Bruce's deep seated anger borne out of childhood trauma that he's repressed. The experiments with the super soldier serum and the gamma radiation just made it into a physical manifestation rather than just a mental one. This also has the effect of making the Hulk stronger the angrier he gets; in theory, there is no upper limit to his strength, depending on his rage level. The madder you make him, the harder it's going to be to stop him, and I love that.
This is also why Abomination was doomed to fall; Abom's strength is about twice that of baseline Hulk, but his power doesn't increase with fury like Hulk's does, so the longer the fight went on, it was inevitable that Hulk would win.
And yes, Sam Stearns is supposed to become a classic comic villain, The Leader, which is hinted at when the contaminated blood drips into his head wound and his head starts pulsating. The Leader is kind of the opposite of the Hulk: physically weak but mentally overpowering, and able to control gamma-rays with his mind.
There's also something very appealing, at least to me, of letting go of all your worries, doubts, and fears, and becoming a giant green rage-monster :P

    • @jdog9420
      @jdog9420 2 года назад +5

Yh I personally love this interpretation of Hulk, I’m not the biggest fan of the direction they went with the character for the MCU, they just watered him down.
He’s supposed to be emotionally unchained. He’s supposed to have these animalistic features. I also really like the CGI they did for him. And also Abomination.
I’m a Film guy and someone who hasn’t read any of the comics ( sry ) and so when the characters or story aren’t 100% to how they are in the comics I’m not upset by it, but if I did read them, the very purpose of having a film is that it’s going to be different, it’s going to be unique. It’s kinda like how theres different iterations of comics, not all of em are the same.
I very much like that this interpretation had Bruce having to deal with his anger and to get it under control. It was very much a balancing act for him to keep his cool.
I’m very much a fan the darker, grittier and grounded movies. For example I like Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man the most for those reasons. Don’t get it twisted, Maguire is the OG.
I could totally see a world where both The Incredible Hulk and The Amazing Spider-Man are in the same universe.
Very intrigued as to what She Hulk is going to be about as we see Blonsky. Curious if we’ll see some sort of bridge between what Norton and Ruffalo have done and if we’ll hear what Blondky has been up to ( Prior to his brief appearance in Shang Chi )

I think I prefer still Edward Norton's take on Banner and Hulk, even if I'm used to Ruffalo by now. I can't help thinking about how the later movies might've been with Norton's Hulk. Glad you liked it too!

Samuel Sterns (Mr. Blue) in comics is the villain known as the Leader. He was a scientist mutated by gamma radiation like Bruce but he turned hyper-intelligent with a huge head instead of super-strong like Banner. The scene where the drop starts deforming his head probably was foreshadowing his appearance in an hypothetical sequel that never happened.
Every time I see this movie I find it better and now I think it´s better than many of the movies of phase 4 so far.

Most people consider “Iron Man” to be the start of the MCU proper, but this was intended as the ‘official’ first film of the franchise.
The vast majority of fans completely ignore this movie for some reason however. Even if they do acknowledge it, it’s usually their least favourite in the franchise.
There was another version of the origin story several years before this one, directed by Ang Lee and starring Eric Bana as Bruce, simply titled “Hulk”. It was a bit more experimental in film style and is largely forgotten by MCU fans, but might be worth a look, if only for it’s curiosity value.
I was living in Toronto during the summer when this film was being shot (sorry, that wasn’t really Harlem, but actually downtown Yonge street) and saw up close many of the props used, like damaged vehicles and US style street furniture.

The first Hulk movie has its momments, but was very slow paced and focused a little to much on the characters. It was well done but the tittle of the movie is... well....HULK. The effects for the movie were still very prototype and have not aged well, But the same can be said for the first Spider Man movie. The way Sam Eliot said mutant french poodle pretty much sums up how forgettable the Hulk fight with enhanced canines was. There was a spark of hope (pun intended) when Banner's father turned into the electric monster Zzaxx, but that was quickly thrown aside. Still, it was a good testing ground as to how to do better job in making future superhero movies.
