Lying on the cold stone floor of the castle’s prison, my body shivering from the damp air, I found myself lost in thought.
How much time had passed since that night-the night I was sent away without even a fight?
The kingdom did not welcome me back as a hero.
What awaited me instead was a cruel reality.
“False Hero.”
“Coward.”
“The Demon Queen’s pawn.”
The king’s voice, filled with rage, roared through the hall as the knights mercilessly struck me down.
Whips reinforced with magic tore through my flesh, and armored fists rattled my bones.
Still, I could not resist.
Because… they were right.
I was no Hero.
I hadn’t even managed to land a single blow on the Demon Queen before being cast away.
I had failed to meet their expectations, and that meant I had no worth to them.
Before I realized it, my body had grown cold, and my consciousness was fading.
-But then, it happened.
The air around me twisted.
The stagnant cold of the dungeon suddenly grew unbearably heavy, as if gravity itself had been thrown into chaos.
An overwhelming presence filled the prison.
I knew this feeling.
No… it couldn’t be.
Slowly, I raised my head.
And there she was.
“…Did I not tell you?”
Her voice, cold and unfathomably deep, echoed through the cell.
Clad in flowing black robes, the Demon Queen looked down upon me, her crimson eyes gleaming with something akin to pity.
A faint, cold smile curled at her lips.
"What is justice?"
In the dim light of the dungeon, she seemed almost divine.
To her, I must have looked like nothing more than a pitiful insect.
Yet, her words were sharp, cutting deep into my soul.
I could say nothing.
I could only stare at her.
And then, for a brief moment-her expression softened.
A fleeting glimpse of something… almost goddess-like, as if she held infinite compassion within her gaze.
But it was gone in an instant.
The Demon Queen’s face returned to its usual, emotionless coldness.
"You shall have your chance."
Her whisper was barely audible, yet it rang with absolute power.
"See with your own eyes. Follow your own heart."
With that, she flicked her hand.
The next moment-an ear-splitting roar shattered the silence as the prison walls exploded into dust.
Beyond the rubble lay the darkened forest, bathed in the moon’s pale glow.
Distant howls of wolves echoed in the night.
And without another word, the Demon Queen vanished into the shadows.
I could not move.
But before my mind could process what had happened, my body was already acting on its own.
“…I have to run…!”
Forcing my trembling legs to move, I ignored the pain coursing through my battered body and stumbled forward.
From within the castle walls, the enraged voices of the knights rang out-they must have already realized that I was gone.
But I didn’t care.
Right now-
I ran, pushing my body forward with every ounce of strength I had left.
I ran into the darkness of the forest, escaping the chains of the kingdom-
-to uncover the true meaning behind the Demon Queen’s words.
