As Olivia Walton, Michael Learned was Amazing. Her presence on the show was so strong and loving. I don't think that, Michael understood how important her character was on the show. She I feel that she didn't realize how much viewers loved her as Olivia Walton. She was Beautiful and A wonderful Mom on the Walton's Series. She was perfectly Cast as Mrs Olivia Walton. 🌹🌹🌹

Michael Learned is just magnificent! Thursday nights were special at our house where we made homemade popcorn and watched as a family. My 85 year old mother and I are rewatching the series and I went back and related their ages to people in our lives which makes it even more meaningful. Grandma and Grandpa are close in age to my great grandparents, John and Olivia were born close to the time my grandparents were born and the children were in the same time period as my parents. These people are as much a part of the fabric of my life as my own extended family. These days I cry more than anything when watching because it elicits those memories. The entire cast was phenomenal and the relationships you always wanted in your life. Thank you for doing this. Michael, you are so appreciated and loved. Your presence and way of dealing with your inlaws, your husband, and your kids made a lifelong impact on us all.

This is wonderful, thank you, John. Michael is the kindest, most generous, loving, and most sensitive soul I've ever known. I started as a Production Assistant on the show, lucky me, huh? And the magic of that work I carry in my heart to this day. Michael's '"..have some coffee more coffee, John?" story is hilarious, and true. As the show progressed it became a challenge for the writers to develop stories for Michael, but I felt Michael underestimated what her very presence meant, just that, her presence in a scene, no lines necessary. A couple years ago Michael reminded me of this: One day (I believe it was Season 5) we were shooting a scene in the garden - it was Michael and Ellen on their knees planting something (I think it was green beans) in the dirt. Michael had no lines. It was hot, and we were covering the scene from various angles. As we completed the wide shot it took time to re-position the camera, adjust lights, etc. Michael and Ellen, instead of heading off to their respective trailers, sat there in the dirt, in the heat, so that I wouldn't have to go chasing after them once we were ready. I asked Michael if she'd like some water...and Michael looked up at me and said, "Why am I here? You could have done this without me." And I said, "Michael, every time you touch a flower you move the furthest star, that's why you're here." It was the permanence of the show, her presence that mattered. We shot on film, and the technology was advancing so rapidly that soon those Warner Brothers Vaults would no longer be needed to protect the negatives, the digital revolution would make the episodes 'permanent' And here we are now, still a 'family' watching the show, for many of us, for the first time.

Wow, what a story John, just wonderful! I couldn't agree more that her presence alone was the constant grounding of the show. You always felt her presence. She is a real actor's actor, a total professional. Glad you enjoyed it and it brought back these awesome memories.

John, I commented on this, exact, same thing, on I believe, it was Behind the Scenes, with Judy Norton. I said this in a comment. Michael Lerned, didn’t, have to speak a word, on the show. Her presence, was enough. She was that, strong of a character. She underestimated, the power of her presence, on this Iconic, show. She didn’t have to speak one single word. Not one. 💕

Hi John Cato and a big hug to Michael Learned.
This is my first time posting and this is only the 2nd video I've had the pleasure of watching - as I've only discovered your Channel recently.
I don't even know how to say it, but I was completely taken by this extensive and very open interview with Michael Learned. I loved her role as Olivia and I am impressed with her as a person (as a single newly divorced Mom - raising 3 boys while working on the much loved WALTONS as grueling and long as the hours were - she and the cast made it work! wowed us for generations.) She has to be a very strong person - not only in her character role. When she mentioned her philanthropic time in Bangladesh & what she shared with us, moved me to tears. The young Bangladesh man thanking her for "giving him a childhood he never had" was so heartfelt. This entire interview was exciting as it was enlightening. The strongest female character and presence on The Waltons in my opinion was Michael Learned.
Thank you, John Cato, you have a very charismatic interview style that gets to the heart of the questions that you know fans wish they could ask and have answered. 👍⭐🤩

Michael Learned is wonderful while rewatching the Waltons. Our family of 6 popped popcorn and watched new episodes every Thursday with a big blanket spread on the floor, and one time my sister's foot landed in the chip dip after a somersault hehe. My mom passed away when I was a teenager so I spent time with my Grandma, 50 years older than me. As her dementia set in 3 years ago, I started rewatching The Waltons for alternate glimpses of the depression to better understand her point of view as she was born in 1918. She grew up on a tobacco farm in Kentucky with a Model A, but cardboard lining the holes in their shoes so that meant barefoot in the summer, but plenty of food to eat for 10 kids. The house was small so the boys could spread out if they slept in the barn. The boys smoked tobacco drying in the rafters, while the girls weren't allowed to smoke and wore sunbonnets because they knew the sun aged skin (didn't have to wait for sunscreen to know that). The boys died in their 70s and 80s, and the girls lived long lives, 2 in their 100's. A few months ago my Grandma passed away at 103, active until the last 2 weeks, working until the end, re-dusting her dresser and creasing her bed linens perfectly folded as if getting ready to hem them. She was a Rosie the Riveter in Detroit, then sewed Lincoln leather seats, then became inspector who sewed the prototype seats on the Mustang. Henry Ford shook her hand to say good job thank you. Michael and Ellen always had their hands busy in the show, just like my Grandma 2 weeks before passing, never idle.
