- Well folks. First off, I'm very sorry. I ended up buying crown crates. Since I was stupid enough to do so, I thought I'd let you in on what I got. I did make an actual decision to buy these based on the maximum number of crates needed to get the pet I wanted most. If you want to skip past my rant and head straight to the opening, just hop along to 5:15 in the video!
I really wanted the purple daggerback pig. I really really did. I made the decision that pig was worth 5000 crowns to me. Do I get it for less?

Lord Phontaroy hardly "for free" since it's NOT a F2p game. And I don't mind spending some money at the store for some convenience and vanity items. But the whole lottery chest system that so many games use is just retarded and if they're counting on them for funding the development, I fear for ESO'S future.
Lord Phontaroy the "so many games" bit was due to the fact that there are so many Korean / asian MMOS out there. Most western games don't use the "lottery chest" crap. Again, I don't mind spending real money on a GOOD game. But I won't spend my money without knowing what I'm buying. And yeah, this scheme works because companies prey on people's addictions. At least on ESO's player base case, people already reached the conclusion that the crates just sucked.

quit blaming them, and take responsibility, its a choice, its not forced, and if the gamblers gamble, let them, they're supporting eso by doing so, and that means Better content for us, why be mad?

Tro Lololo I never said they were selling P2W stuff. But just like with tons of other games, they exploit the gambling nature of players. And use terrible RNG to hook people into keep buying crates in the hopes of getting the item they want. I'm OK with spending real money on games, I do it all the time. But this RNG crate selling practice is just disgusting.
I got the game a couple weeks ago and been hanging onto my free 500 crowns because I honestly couldn't justify getting anything from the store with that amount. Decided to buy 1 crate just for the heck of it and got a facial accessory (I don't really care for..) and a lizard (that is cute, actually). Wish I had the angels on my side because I really need a mount (any mount). But oh well - guess I was still luckier than a lot of people I see on these videos :P
I love it when he says he has never seen such good fortune, and yet you have bought 5k crates, and I bought 2 packs of the 4 crates on 2 separate occasions and I had an attronach mount in them both. lol
I was actually happy with my crates. Bought crowns on sale. .I bought two sets of 15 and a couple of the smaller ones. I got the Wolf atronach mount, fox wolf mount, leopard cub pet, marcarth dog pet, netch pet and all the wizard type hats. I traded in my consumables and added with the duplicates, it equaled just over 400 crown gems which meant I could afford another atronach mount so I got the atronach sench. Now I have two atronachs and all the stuff I wanted, and don't need to spend any more money until they change whats in the boxes.
That's cool you got what you wanted! It's all about what each person actually likes (what I like you may not and vice versa) really. I hope you enjoy that adorable leopard cub! That's something I'd like but I don't want to chance it with buying more crates, so I'll just be happy with my pig :) I also always buy my crowns on sale, but it's still $29.99 for the 5500 pack (I'm Canadian) on sale, so still quite a bit to spend when looking for something specific in a grab bag.
Yeah I think it worked for me because I owned alot of the stuff and liked alot of the new stuff. But if you want that one mount only...it works out much more expensive than the old way of just buying it outright.
These things are absolutely horrible. Zero chance I would waste money on them.

She wanted the fucking pig folks... it's simple. If it wasn't for that, she wouldn't have bothered. She figured if all else fails, i got something i wanted. She also had the chance to make a video about it for her subs, that also factors into the worth it/not worth it ratio here. The nerd rage in the comments and the down votes = misdirected anger.
Also thanks for this, i wanted to know the ratios, not all of us come here seeking to have our opinions validated.
Heh, thank you for understanding. You're right, I just wanted the damn pig so bad. I wanted some other things, but not enough. Haven't bought a crate since ;) Glad you understand. Of course my experience with a limited value of crates cannot show how it is for everyone, but figured I'd share. You could hit the jackpot and get ever item you want, or you could end up like me. That's how gambling/games of chance work. :)
I apologize if this is a double post, I thought I posted my comment, and went to look at other comments, but do not see it. Anyway...
I have purchased crown crates in the past, when they first came out. This video is now 6 months old, so around that time. I got predominately junk that I will never use and collectibles that I do not like. I did get a hat that was ok and the lizard pet. I got a costume dress that is ok for my female character, though typically if I see a costume I like enough, I will just purchase it directly.
I got Argonian and Khajiit only items though. I have neither of those races. I personally do not care to play what I term 'animal' races. I tend to love elves, so most of my characters are elves. ZOS would not even deign to respond after I wrote to them and explained I will NEVER use those collectibles and could players please have some way to opt out of a collection item in favor of the gems? Even during the recent event where they gave us free crates (Somehow I managed to miss log in on two of the days, so I got 3 crates instead of 5) and still got nothing at all that I liked, including a lame collectible that I will not use.
Going by the three gem rule is ok for the lower cost items. Unless you have a LOT of money to waste, it is not worth it to obtain the 400 gem Apex items that way. I did the math and it comes out to $600 USD for an Apex item. it would be NOT worth it in my book. I suppose if you're rich and $600 USD is pocket change for you, then fine. Have fun. It would still be $280 for a 100 gem item. Again, not worth it to me, but if you have that kind of money lying around, and it is worth it to you, then go for it. Personally, I will pass. Maybe I might find something I like that AI can get with the gems I already have.
The most accurate description of Visible Disappointment
Well, I had a couple thousand crowns so I decided to buy 15 of them. Before I extracted a single gem I had 60 of them, and not only did I get a bunch of the same 4 outfit items, I even got 2 of the same item in the same crate. I was however lucky enough to get the storm atronach bear mount so it wasn't 100% bad, but definitely not something I'll buy again.
+Anything Goes ah, you did much better than me. I believe I had 15 gems after 15 crates before I extracted anything. I got my pig, so I'm happy and won't be buying any more.
Like you I was against them but fell into temptation and got 2 stacks of 15, cashing in my Sony rewards and then banked crowns I already had. Got to 200 gems in the end. Some stuff I used, some I would never. My PlayStation visa has been seeing more action, pay it off, get the rewards, buy more free crowns, use the system to your advantage.

lmao you know 4 years later after this vid i got into eso and bought crowns and got the same results as you did since i got the storm crates. not worth it
One unique thing you can get from the crates is a +100% EXP Scroll, which cannot be bought via gems or on the crown store itself.
I was extremely lucky in my 15 crates to get the storm atronach wolf mount.
+Ian Carlson there's also one for +150% increased xp... That's why they added that super rare xp boost recipe and ingredients recently
Literally got the pig on my first chest a few mins ago after buying a total of 30 crates (~$80 AUD).
I initially wanted the red wolf mount... ended up getting enough gems to buy the wolf in the end (and a surplus of 55 gems) thanks to duplicates of trash outfits/hats etc. Least RNGesus gave me the red wolf pet to go with the mount so I was surprised & marginally pleased with the outcome. (If anyone else is wondering what else I looted worth mentioning; 3 different hats, Clouded leopard mount, shornhelm shephard pet)
Gambling is implemented in almost every game now; Runescape, Overwatch, Gw2 to name but a mere needle in the haystack of the video gaming industry to incorporate these shrewd methods into their business models... I wasn't surprised ESO has succumbed to the easy money-making schemes via the oh-so-common "RNG boxes".
Would I have outright bought the mount if it were in the shop? Absolutely. Was this worth the $80? Realistically, no.
I am neutral with my findings; my humble opinion I can now share with those who are curious about this risk in particular.

The only thing I wanted isn't even in the crates. I wanted the treasure hunter outfit to go with cadwell's helm and my cheerful personality pose thingy!

I've noticed something, you can get 10 crown soul gems for 400 crowns. Then extract that to 10 gems. So you can get 10 gems for 400 crowns. Meaning you could've got the pig for 1600 crowns.

I've bought fifteen of every crown crate I've wanted to date (around 5) and always gotten an apex from the fifteen.
like I said before MISS BIZZ its addictive but might be not worth a whole lot of money on haha :)
that said I might buy 15 myself just for the sake of it, I have a lot saved up from ESO PLUS CROWNS so......

It's only addictive if you're a gambler by nature.
...and that is a whole other issue with them, that I won't go into here.
But, if you're not a gambler by nature, it's just a stressful hassle being forced to gamble, rather than at least having an option to buy the thing you want for a set price.
OK, so I decided to do some "research" of my own...
I wanted a particular (Legendary) mount and a (hideously overpriced!) matching (Legendary) pet.
It's crazy to me that the pet costs the same as the mount, but there you go.
I bought 10K Crowns worth of crates (2 x 5K).
So, 30 crates total, which cost me about £26.00, as Crowns are currently on sale.
Turns out that was more than I needed, in terms of gems extracted; but, I expect there will be something else I want in future, so no big deal.
From those 30 crates I extracted 264 gems in total, plus the option of 33 more, if I decide to trade-in a statue.
So, 297 if you were trying to truly maximise the yield - or slightly more than that, actually, as I got a mimic stone (which I kept), as well.
I did not win either the mount, or the pet, I wanted...
However, to my surprise, I won 2 x Flame Atronach Apex mounts (the camel and the guar).
I don't really want either of them, to be honest.
I don't hate them - they're just not really my style.
So, it's a shame I can't give them away to people, who have been kind to me and others, who would no doubt appreciate them more. :)
Aside from the mounts and the statue, I also won:
2 x Superior pets (both very cute, actually),
5 x costumes (none of which I will use!),
1 x hairstyle (which I probably won't use, either),
1 x (hideous!) hat (Rebreather),
1 x circlet (OK, but I like others more and it sits too high on the forehead),
3 x head markings (probably won't use any of them),
3 x body markings (ditto!),
1 x momento (I like it, but how much use can you really get out of them?),
All in all, I think I did pretty well prize-wise - especially in terms of mounts.
Or would have done, had I wanted most of it...
Think I did relatively well in terms of gem extraction, as well.
However, not everyone does as well (or does as well, every time) and I still maintain that it is wrong to push people, who don't like gambling, or who have a problem with it, into gambling and to give them no other way of just purchasing certain items outright.
It's like encouraging a teetotaller, or an alcoholic, to drink when they don't want to.
There has to be a better way.
To each their own. I put the buzzcut (believe it or not it was one of the few things I wanted) on my female Bosmer vampire with the Aldmeri Dominion tattoos, and she looks really badass.

I've already opened 45 crates by now, still no mount, I'm holding over 200 gems now, next month will buy more, I really want the Apex Senche for my lightning based sorc! lol
I got the Atronach Horse on my first crate. ^^ I originally wanted the Senche, though, since I'm mainly a collector of Senches. I saw someone with the Atronach Camel, and it was hilarious how the lightning awesomely strikes down as it... spits. Not when it roars, growls, howls or stands on its hindlegs... when it spits. XD
Some of the hats lets you actually have hair! My Wood Elf ears clipped through many of them, though. I really wish they had just released these things normally, or let crown crates be some sort of rare reward in PvP or something, in where crown crates only give old cosmetics. It's just, I don't know, not worth it. Unless they really get some special stuff next seasons I hope to just vote with my money and only buy things through the actual store and avoid the crates. They awoke a casual gambling addiction I would like to keep in check.

If you just want one items, crates are a waste of money. I liked the items in this crown season and got lucky. 5k crowns for 2 mounts (1 atronach mount) and several pets/costumes is pretty decent, considering that I'd have to spent way more money on buying this stuff individually. So I'm fine with crates, as long as they don't contain p2w stuff.
Even if you get a mount , you can only ride one. I learned quickly that those boxes suck !
I bought the 400 hundred crown one, and I pressed F3, the hotkey for opening them. Instead of seeing a box a seller, I saw nothing however I could hear the dude talking as I pressed it and left it. I reloaded ESO, nothing happened, am I the only one with this problem?

Just buy the membership and spend the bonus crowns on the crates therefore I class it as a bonus

Oh that addon you said you had seen on ESOUI, I did find it, I've also had a lot of work done on it (as it was abandoned by the coder). It's all updated with knobs and bells on, you can now find it in Minion, ExcessiveWithdrawals, the original idea was very clever and if you have a guild and/or know plp that do, definitely worth getting.

I opened 150 crates and I have everything, ended up getting 2 of the apex rewards and buying the rest with the ~2000 gems I traded for.

Yep. ~$150 worth on sale plus some I had from subbing. At some point I was getting 20+ gems per crate on average because of duplicates.
I've seen a larger than expected number of players with the atronach mounts. They're either very lucky on the pulls or spent a crap-ton of money. I'm assuming the latter because of RNG. I've also seen a handful with the elk mount. This reminded me of how scary it was that many players spent 5k crowns on the panther mount with the glowing runes.
I hope people will stop spending so much money on crap like this. Loot crates are the biggest waste of money in ESO. 4500 crowns for a plain looking elk mount is also a major rip-off.

Hey, new player here. Is there a reliable site for recommended class spec and weapon combinations? Been on so many that I dont really know which one to trust. I enjoy my magicka templar with destruction staff and Dawns Wrath but I wanna try something else too and I dont want to make mistakes.
+Cavemen of Technology if you're using Magicka you either need to use destruction/restoration staff.... Or dual wield (but only use class skills and no weapon skills). Using dual wield is more advanced though, you do it for the extra set bonus slot and such.
Wish there was a way to trade those hats and non combat pets you don't want.

tbh the worst offender for loot crates is overwatch. Not only are they expensive, but EVERYTHING is in loot crates. the only way to get currency to buy anything. is done from loot crates. And all events lately have a 3000 currency pricetag. :/ Blizzard doesn't even let you buy currency with real cash. Sure its all cosmetic, but its the only reward in the game.
Ugh, I'm so against crown crates though. 0 way to get them outside of buying them, and just bad bad RNG (of course).

I bought one crate an got the Atronach wolf mount, extremely lucky to say the least. However I still hate these RNG boxes, Destiny has them too as do many other games. These things are going away that's for sure, if you don't like them then I'd say to don't buy them. Although if you have the money an you really want something, who's to tell you how to spend your money? Just know what you getting into, it's gambling at the end of the day. Great video Bizz.
Yep I unboxed 4 and got the storm atronach horse and I do agree with you its not a wise decision to open these up.

Miss Bizz Absolutely, if people get what they want then that's great but it's when you don't and you've spent a fortune that it becomes a problem. As long as people budget an don't go over that then I think it's ok, just understand that they might get nothing.
The problem is, unless you almost never want to buy anything fun, you can't just not buy them.
They're locking almost everything behind these crates...
If it was an option to gamble, or buy things outright, it would be OK from that point of view.
Still wrong from a moral point of view, if people (especially kids) are being encouraged to gamble/gambling more than they can afford.
But, OK from the point of view of giving people a choice as to how they can acquire the things they want and not neglecting all their non-gambling customers.
However, that is not the case.
Miss Bizz could not have bought her beloved pig in any other way.
She was forced to gamble for it, or go without.

Yesterday I tried my 1-st crown crate bought for my last crowns and I got the Purple Daggerback right away :-) And an evening dress. Both I don't need much because I don't have a female character yet, and the pet doesn't match my main character. But anyway, that was a good crate.
+Dorian Raze What anyone says is a good crate vs bad crate is a personal opinion really. I'm sure there are people out there that love the hats that I'm do disappointed in. Its definitely a gamble on if you get something that you want.
Sure it's just my opinion. Who told else? And I did not expect enything from the crate, so I got something that I might use some day but not too bad to regret the 400 crowns. I'm not sure if I ever try this again, for I don't buy crowns often enough. But I found the crate store itself fun, and I think many people with better gaming budget will enjoy it a lot.

Ill be level 600 still riding my 10k horse lol, I'm not paying for a re-skinned mount, honestly I hate all of the mounts besides the regular horses they are cool looking but they're just not very immersive to elder scrolls, they make the game feel like a try hard w.o.w in my opinion.

+Furious Vedan that's up to you if you think it's good. It is one of the apex tier mounts which is the rarest, so in that sense it's good. Personally i don't like the bear riding animation though

What a bunch of junk! :( I had people fussing at me in game because I got a soul shriven horse, an evening dress, and a little penguin pet when I bought a 4 crown crate packet with 1500 crowns from my ESO membership. Now I know why! You didn't get anything remotely worth your 5,000 crown purchase. :(

wow i have shit luck and even I had WAY better luck with my 15. Got 2 Apex mounts, a DB motif, exp boost stuff, instant research stuff, mount upgrades, and a few decent costumes and of course potions and poisons galore
I have seen people complain that this is gambling. In the US it isn't, is the law the same in Canada? I'd like to think they would know before jumping in, but stranger things have happened.
+Mikey I don't think people mean gambling under the legal definition. It's a grab bag of items but if you're after specific things it is gambling your crowns for said item. Not under the legal term, just that your paying crowns and only having a possibility of getting something you want. You are not directly purchasing the item you specifically want, but you are getting things in return for sure.
Not knowing what you're paying for has been my issue all along. I might feel a bit better about them if nicer items had better drop rates.
+Mikey Yeah for sure, although from a business perspective this is obviously meant for you to take a risk and end up paying more for an item than you would have from the regular crown store. Example? I just paid 5000 crowns for a pet pig. In reality, I did get a bunch of other stuff, but since I didn't want it, it seems like I just paid all that for the pet.
Of course it's gambling.
Pretty sure they get around the gambling laws (such as they are), by making you convert your real money into a game currency first.
But, it's still gambling and quite frankly, shouldn't be allowed; especially in a game that kids play.
I know kids aren't supposed to play it, but we all know they do.
I don't want to have to see videos of people virtually on the point of tears (not this one, but others), because they have a gambling problem and have ended up gambling more than they can afford and have still not got the item they wanted.

Well, I guess i was lucky for the first time in my life because yesterday I bought and opened 15 crates and got wolf mount at 6-8 crate. Anyway won't buy those crates any time soon cos my luck is out now at least for 5 years I guess...

Miss Bizz i got pig, lizard, doge and that mid air flying medusa. to be honest they all look pretty bad. costumes are not worth wearing at all (at least for me they look terrible). also got storm transform memento which looks pretty cool but it only lasts 15 seconds so like what the heck... all other items are junk. well i sold all i could for gems and since i bought eso like 1-2 weeks ago im gonna use 50 percent xp boosts and bought 11 speed riding lessons for 55 gems. so probably without a mount those crates are not worth opening at all. its like opening cs go crates where you will never get a knife.

I would have definitely used the netch if I got it :) I'm a big fan of pets so I really like them, unfortunately I mostly got costumes that I didn't buy before (since I don't like them) and hats... Which I don't like. Lol. It's good you got to get something useful with your gems, but I'm not sure it's any better than just buying riding lessons etc. On the normal crown store.

+Stirl Cotzec hah. Because I went in knowing I'd likely need to pay 5000 crowns for that pig, and that pig was worth that much to me. I wouldn't have done it if the pig was 100 gems though, as with the way I estimated cost... It's over 10k crowns to buy one of the 100 gem rewards.

i see value in that compared with spending the same and most likely getting lots of potions and a few armour costumes. it's seriously put me off playing the game.

ff14 has an expensive cash shop. if you miss out on event gear it goes into the cash shop for $7-$18
they also add exclusives like the moggle mount for $30 (account wide) but ya...
I got a few with the monthly crowns I get. Noteworthy items were both low tier wizard hats, the big argonian feather headress thing, the other argonian hair style that I don't remember what its called, soul shriven armor costume x2, storm atro aura thing, and the coin dress. Everything else was the standard potion ect ect crap. The big argonian feather thing is pretty cool, and the wizard hats are ok I guess. Chances are pretty much nobody is getting the high tier items unless they pay and arm and a leg. Overall I would say just save your money. Its just another shitty micro transaction wallet parasite. Don't fall for its nonsense.
