Roan Highlands is by far my favorite place on the AT. Never been up to Grassy knob. Tks for going up there. That will be a single day overnight-er for me some time. Glad you backtracked to Roan High knob shelter. You would have regretted not visiting the highest shelter on the AT. It use to be a fire wardens cabin. The tower was located just in front of it. The old cponcrete foundation and steps are still there amongst the bushes. Happy Hiking Braids.

Oh, this section is just incredible! My bf and I had an epic backpacking trip here a few years ago. We saw two incredible sunsets...one with a rainbow! We camped at the trail junction below grassy ridge because it was just so windy on the bald!

The reason the Cloudland Hotel isn’t there anymore is the weather destroyed it over time. Grassy Bald is beautiful at night. On a clear night the Milky Way can be visible and it is absolutely gorgeous. It’s almost always busy at the bald especially in the warmer months. Probably more so now that people are tired of being cooped up. The rhododendron gardens at the top of roan mountain are beautiful they should be at peak bloom right now but I don’t know if they are open now or not.
You not only have a good eye for a campsite, but a photographer’s eye for framing a beautiful picture. I think everyone watching wanted to be right there taking in that beauty. Your the fortunate one, but you had to work for it. The people that drove most of the way up got the same view with less work. I think when you have to work for something you appreciate it much more. Not a bad place to have supper! This area definitely seems to have a different look than where you have been. It’s neat to see the changes. The view of your tent with the mountains in the background could definitely be an ad. 😍😍😍

Grassy Ridge is my Katahdin. Most thru hikers don't bother to go up there, let alone camp up there. They have no idea what they are missing.
You`re doing great!! I think your mojo is just beginning, will propel you for many miles. Roan Highlands are one of the best sections on entire AT. Sorry you had to share it with so many; I had it to myself last year. Great camping spot!! Enjoy!! Iceager76

The Balds are my favorite piece of earth ❤ I'm so glad you got to see it in beautiful weather. Grassy Ridge is a great place to camp. Great opportunity for sunset and the sunrise over Grandfather Mountain.

I have been to Roam Mtn a few years ago when the Rhodendren was in bloom. Just Beautiful. I also stood on the site where the hotel once was.

When you get to 19E, I was there hiking that section about 3 months ago!! I have friends who built a beautiful log cabin and you will be about 2 miles from them. Looking forward to seeing that portion of the trail that I was on recently!! Happy trails!!

In the "count your blessings" department, did you notice the old trail going straight up the mountain? There are several places where the old trail is crossed off with logs. It seemed to go straight up.
Are your Saucony Peregrines still doing well for you? I just picked up a pair of Saucony Mad Rivers. I plan to try them out in a few weeks in the Smokys.

Where were the rhododendrons? I thought Roan was known for their displays of them. Also when you’re camping on a bald what do you do with your food sack?
This morning the top of your pack was sitting up well and those load lifters looked to be at an ideal angle, best I‘ve seen them for you, did it feel right on your shoulders? It looked right. Great views, it’s nice that the hard slog of uphill sections are often rewarded with a beautiful vista to take a recovery break. I look forward to every upload, thanks for sharing.
Your pack settled and ended up lower after lunch break, but it sure started in good shape.
Question for anybody who sees this: I am a future thru hiker, in area like where she was in this post...where do you hang your bear bag?
If you were doing 1 or 2 days of day hiking on Roan Mountain, what would you suggest?
I’d do the section at carvers gap and the portion that goes over hump mountain. My two favorite parts.
