Tips for Keeping Discus Fishes-
1) Maintain Temperature 30 to 31 degree ( In bear bottom tanks)
And 28 to 29 degree in Planted tanks.
2) Feed a good protein & vitamin rich food which is easy to digest.
3) Make Daily water changes if possible (20 to 30%). Or else Alternatively as per your feasibility. Water should be atleast stored for 24hrs before use with full aeration and use a good declorinator.
4) Take the fishes from one source don't mix to avoid cross contamination.
5) Tank size should be minimum 3x1.5x1.5 feet with 6 to 8 Fishes (3 to 3.5 inch) for better space and growth.

Hey, Razib generally the Colour and Growth aspects depends on the gene of fishes if parents are good and breeder has taken a proper care at initial stage of raising that's feeding and husbandry the colour and growth will naturally come in place with age though a proper colour and pattern is generally visible @4 inch approx then it depends on strains and the way you take care.... though will also cover these topic in brief further.

Hi Sachin, there are various aspects to this issues or can say scenario though many senior and well experienced person has covered these topic on RUclips you can refer to that and try to relate the scenario and take actions accordingly.
Though as you requested will try to cover the reasons of such issues and how can we avoid in initial stage itself that we don't need to medicate our fishes.
Our purpose is to provide Hobbyist the fishes with good health and strong immunity so that they don't fall sick and stay long with them. So will cover the said topic in the format like what's the basic and how to take precautions so that there is no need for cure as there will no disease. Not saying that fishes don't fall sick but we should take precautions so no issues in future and also will share all the experience which we have in discus keeping.
And please as an first step please take the points in action from these video though it may sound basic but they are the key.
