    Ah the briefing at the start brings so many memories from my own times as a squad leader in actual infantry. After platoon leader finished his briefing and asked "any questions" every squad leader was quiet and afterwards grouped together and quietly asked each other what the heck that platoon leader talked about. Usually the whole battleplan was so drawn out and overly complex we SL's had only a vague idea of what to do and where to be, and in the end it worked wonders. The more we got experience on combat manouvers the more i came to realise how irrelevant a field officer is to actual combat, more often its the NCO's doing the game changing moves in limits dictated by platoon leaders monologues about his grand battleplan. Sure a officer has his strategic value and a fine one like ours was is a great morale boost as he is not part of the squads and therefore has hes "aura of godliness" around him, but in modern army officers role is much less glorious than i had imagined.

    • @sixtwentyeight8620
      @sixtwentyeight8620 5 лет назад +6

      You are absolutely right. This briefing was overdrawn, overextended and over useless. Train your squad to be autonomous with minimum instruction and able to execute plan, back up plans, coordinate and regroup as necessary. All the rest is classroom fantasy.

    Pretty cool to see this sort of semi-realistic gameplay in a FPS game. Now, obviously the magic map and the perfect radio link to the squad leaders means it's a whole different ball game compared to what it would be in real life, but I wish the platoon leader would still focus more on actually using the squads to fight the war instead of personally acting as the spearhead and inevitably dying in the process. :D I mean it's good to lead from the front, but not quite THAT front... You were always the first to run into action with a squad or two trying to catch up with you, and you kept stealing MGs and mortars from your squads so you can personally give them instructions. You left one entire squad behind in the village to do absolutely naught while you were personally hunting the enemy halftrack a mile away.

    • @greybayles7955
      @greybayles7955 5 лет назад +7

      If youre leading an element larger than a squad you should stay towards the rear and push your element rather than pull. Obviously its a game so whatever but in real small unit tactics thats generally how it goes.

    • @MacKaris
      @MacKaris 5 лет назад +14

      @@greybayles7955 Depends. The way I've been trained is that the platoon leader mostly situates himself behind the first squad. That way he's safe from the initial contact, but still close enough to know what's happening so he can then lead the other squads as necessary. A platoon leader who stays in the back will often find himself completely clueless as to what's really happening since he can't see anything when the shooting starts. Also unless the platoon leader has a state of the art radio link between himself and the squad leaders, he needs to be in actual LOS and shouting distance of the squad leaders in order to be able to give any orders. This is not always possible, so the platoon leader or his messenger will be doing a lot of running. You can of course give orders in advance and then just launch the squad off in some direction hoping for the best, and that can be used in certain situations, but then it will be difficult to react to anything that happens between the order issue and order completion as the squad is essentially out of communication.

    • @SkyNinja759

      I think to keep the game moving it needs to be somewhat unrealistic. You don't want a 5 hour game of Marco Polo if you can have a good immersive experience for an hour. Freeing up comms for tactical chatter makes more sense than "what's your position" all the time. Also friendly fire wouldn't be fun for a 1 life game (unless it's genuine FF from mortars, not one potato soldier that didn't see your position on the map).

Better to step back and lead from there, rather than being upfront and personally leading an attack while the rest of the battlefield fends for its self. A Command's POV is going to be all radio and maps for most of the time, so following a regular grunt's POV would be cool and provide the action footage. Great fun though.
