I didn't hear it mentioned directly, but it was suspected that the death of Zola (carbon monoxide poisoning) was an assassination, where an Anti-Dreyfusard blocked the Chimney spout.
Dreyfus' second and more aggressive lawyer, the one who was shot, wanted to leverage the case to bring down the entire army officer corps and the government; his name was Fernand Labori, and he was also Zola's Lawyer during the Libel trial. It wasn't mentioned directly, but at the time the Libel and Slander laws included a "Press Code" which contained legal restrictions preventing the press from criticizing the army.
Jaures becoming the leader of the Socialist party was also significant because the anarchist influenced leaders in the Socialist party saw the Affair as a petty dispute between officers and not a microcosm of the broader class conflict of the political left and right. Jaures helped organize massive rallies of the Working class calling for the acquittal of Dreyfus.
Important note on the Political Consequences of the Affair. After Dreyfus is finally acquitted, the army is officially de-Catholicize.
