Great video! Shame its such a limited service (and that Northern can't even stop themselves pulling a Northern during the first week of operation!) Brigg does look lovely though.
After the suspension of the passenger service for 54 weeks, with the train operator refusing to put on a replacement bus service, the days of Northern and the community rail partnership on this line are fading away.
I grew up in North Lincolnshire and visited Brigg fairly regularly, but never knew it even had a railway station until a few years ago. I went to see family last Christmas and visited Brigg on the bus. Went across to see the rail station. This of course was the point at which passenger services were just about to start again. The only train through Brigg that day was freight. I wandered there to see it come through and a guy turned up on a bike to spot the freight service. It was nice and peaceful at the station.
What a strange country we live in..... you seem surprised and delighted that a scheduled train actually turns up! Brigg looks the perfect place for peaceful meditation...you aren't going to be disturbed by lots of noisy trains and crowds of passengers for one thing!
I believe they now even have electricity in that part of the country. Maybe the train will benefit of it too in 50 or 100 years.
@@tonguepiercing Really??? Things are more advanced there than I thought!!!!
I’m ashamed to say that, despite living in south Lincolnshire, I’ve never made it to Brigg - my loss, it would seem (I have though been to Gainsborough, and was NOT impressed). Anyway, a delightful video, Mate - what fabulous weather you had, with the chestnut candles and May blossom; England at its most beautiful! 👍🏻
Was beautiful indeed!
I'm originally from Brigg and edited the community magazine for a number of years. Several times we ran articles about the train service. We pointed out that you could get to Cleethorpes for a day out and Sheffield (or even Meadowhall with a quick change) for shopping. Gave prices for the tickets and mentioned that concessionary fares were available. The kind of basic information that anybody could look up but might not otherwise think of doing so. For a few years there was a bump in passenger numbers and, while I'm sure there were a number of factors, I like to think we got more people using the service.
If we compare Brigg to Market Rasen, we can see that Market Rasen could generate up to 70,000 passengers a year despite being somewhat smaller. I think the main fault of the service through Brigg is that it goes to Sheffield. Grimsby and Gainsborough already have a service to Sheffield so any passengers from those towns would have no incentive to use the Brigg line. I believe that the train should instead go south toward Nottingham on the Robin Hood line. That way people from Grimsby and Gainsborough would have a new direct destination, the line would see increased use, and a higher frequency service could be sustained.
(Also, the hut outside the station was formerly used to hold Stennett's market. All kinds of live birds were stacked in cages and auctioned there. If the railway had had trains on the same day as the market passengers exiting the station would have needed to step through a fowl auction, which might have been a unique arrival experience.)
Thanks for coming to Brigg by train and posting this interesting video.
brilliant Brigg looks amazing & looks like a great place for a day out but its a shame its only once a day i rekon if the service had more jouneys it would be more popular and more people will use it but anyway brilliant vlog
nice to see some of the small towns
3:50 Wow even Northern themselves admit their company is bad just look at the logo
Definitely sad face ☹️
You missed the only reason anyone in the local area goes to Brigg: The Brigg Garden Centre, which has a christmas display at christmas
Wrong: many of us work there and visit weekly for the food shopping. Brigg continues to perform some functions of Local Government, has medical facilities attended by people from a wide area and has two Secondary Schools, plus Sixth Form, attended by scholars from the rural communities around.
Looks like a nice place. Lovely weather as well.
If you go on a Thursday, there's a market.
Will have to consider doing the whole line, possibly a circular route - Nottingham/Lincoln/Barnetby/Brigg/Sheffield/Nottingham.
Great video as always. Beautiful weather! Interesting line, I would like to visit it one day!
I've only been to Gainsborough Central once on foot (whilst visiting The Northolme to watch the football!). I love that the footbridges on this line are a lovely light blue colour - they stand out compared to the usual dark and drab colours. Mind you, not like they'll get dirty given the infrequency of the service they receive!
My first attempt at the Brigg line was Monday 22nd May but guess what, it was cancelled at Sheffield with about 15 minutes notice. 🙁 I rearranged my plans and managed to ride, from Grimsby back to Sheffield on Tuesday 23rd😀 I'd there were about 20 people on board. I was using a 4 in 8 North East rover. I'm glad I managed to cover this very awkward line. Another awkward line I did while I was up north, Leeds - Goole direct. No chance of getting off at any of the intermediate stations. A great video Nick.
Currently Sheffield train crew are about 22 drivers short, so it's a case of management trying to jungle eggs
Such a great video, well done. Brigg is such a lovely little branch line station with beautiful countryside around it. Brigg town is very pretty too. A very enjoyable video, thanks.
Great video I'm deaf and blind but it's still amazing you're the best youruber ever
Nick, taking buses can be fun too.
It is lucky that this line did not get shut down for good. At least with only a few trains running there is some hope for it! Thanks for uploading
Hi Nick mate another excellent video and I really enjoyed it so much. Brigg looks a lovely place and a nice awesome looking railway station. Thankyou for making this video.
now build houses like that "US" development at Reading Green Park in that space at Brigg , for decent demand for rail etc services.
Lesson learned. Always assume the best stuff is on little railways.
nice to see you back
hope you have a good summer vacation from school
plan to take a train this summer from London to Wales-northern .....want to visit the Irish sea.....
Great vid, i found your channel recently and your vids are great, keep it up
Pre 1993 their was 2 services a day, but one return journey went from Sheffield to Gainsborough lea Road, onto Lincoln then to Cleethorpes that way. I preferred to go from Cleethorpes to Sheffield via the Brigg line rather than via Doncaster.
It was actually 3 each way on Mondays to Saturdays but had drifted down from 7 or so each way after the 1968 timetable change. The Sunday service followed a slightly different timeline but was similarly reduced until all that remained was a single return trip during the peak summer period.
That's cool, always remember the Sheffield train from Cleethorpes was 10:58, then went to 10:56
I wonder if it'd be possible to convert the Brigg branch into a heritage line since it is so underutilized....
Probably just the musings of a preservationist though....
What an interesting little video. Very well shot and narrated too.
I feel sorry for you having to go to Gainsborough but brigg is really nice,
Also you remind me of dan hardcastle (nerdcubed) some of your comments seem like something he would say
I suppose this train at least provides a minimum shopping service for the local community with, say, a roughly 2 hour layover in a market/shopping town. Out from Gainsborough (ex. from Sheffield, Worksop and Retford) weekdays at 1043, arriving Brigg at 1107 and Cleethorpes at 1144. Then returning at 1320, Brigg at 1349 and Gainsborough at 1418 (and on to Retford, Worksop and Sheffield).
But I'd have thought three trains a day on weekdays is the absolute minimum to provide a chance to get to work/college/shops/seaside/connecting trains elsewhere and back - say at 0800. 1300 and 1700 in both directions each weekday.
1:42 when the train information screen is drunk as hell
Brigg is does look a lovely place, it's a shame that they axe the Saturday only service for a once per day weekday service, Great video
Also that 9 Adults and 9 Children you cannot do online as it limits the amount of people to 9
seems like a nice and quite large town that would deserve a more regular train service. I bet it's just this quiet because of the inconvenience.
It's definitely not one of those stations in the middle of nowhere.
Its not far from Scunthorpe so its served quite well by buses. Its an agricultural centre for the local farmers so more like proper Lincolnshire and not too far from the scenic Lincolnshire Wolds.
Keep up the good work! :)
Only running one train per day, and cancelling it on some days seems a sneaky way of trying to justify withdrawing the service completely
Both Brigg and Gainsborough are large enough settlements to justify a proper service
Gainsborough has a regular service at Lea Road on both EMR and Northern, but yeah Brigg doesn’t despite the station location being so ideal :(
Great video man
Good video, thanks for sharing with us
The one train per week on Saturdays was nothing to do with "the infamous Beeching cuts", as you claim in your introduction - it was an economy measure introduced in 1993, thirty years after Beeching and his report.
I will be riding this line very soon from Sheffield to Cleethorpes
Edit: I have now ridden it, the line was ok, but to have more time in Cleethorpes I got the 20:24 Transpennine Express train back.
I also went to Brigg level crossing a bit ago, and we drove through the town to get there. It is quite a nice town and crossing
Infrequent service. You don't say. Glad to have a nick video again.
like this mideo so much continue that way ( ignore the errors im from portugal 😁)
The idea of using a bus visibly disgusts you. An inflatable canoe could be an alternative in some places like Brig.
Great video, interesting thing to find. Now I know what that dotted line means on the Northern Map. I’ll have to give it a go, I’ve got tokens to get a Northern Day Rover on their complete network for £10!
strangely enough I have found another one train a day From Wigan North west via Newton Le willows to Liverpool Lime Street weekdays only at 09 -31 arriving at 10-12,
Northern struggle with the services they’ve got 😂
pass them to another operator
Ive been on the train to Brigg before, really lovely place.
In my opinion it’s absolutely disgusting what they’re doing to this line’s service. Its a far worse service since the timetable change but with a facade of being a better more frequent service. The fact that people can no longer go on a day trip from Brigg to either Sheffield or Cleethorpes is absolutely awful and was likely the majority of traffic on this line before the timetable change.
Great video
good video,be nice for you to do feature on some miniature railways or maybe consider driving 1 of our miniature locos?
Nice job
There used to be a train once a day at Pilning that I even used once to travel to Manchester. Now it only has one platform and only one train a week. Brigg reminds me of Melksham that used to have a poor service but now has many more trains. Is there a Brigg line campaign group?
I wasa expecting a little village
i went on holiday to brigg. i love brigg
Brilliant video Nick, Brigg looks like a lovely place, shame there's only 1 train a day on a weekday and it's been getting cancelled.
The 'Brigg' line just makes me think of 'Brig' in Switzerland.
Which is far east along the valley of the river Rhone - but still recieves a pretty much consistently hourly electric train from Geneva Airport through the day.
I know because its the train I caught as far as Visp (one stop short of Brig) before changing for a 'Matterhorn-Gothard Bahn' railway service up the mountain to Zermatt last year, when i did a guided climb of the mountain 'Breithorn' (4,164m / 13,661ft)
you could do Gainsbrough lea road Gainsbrough central
I think people would use that train,if there wasn't the possibility of it being cancelled .
Tomorrow i am going on a northern train to York!
You coming to Edinburgh on the 7th of June?
How did you get to Gainsborough?
Nice little old market town Brigg. I couldn't believe there was only ever one train a week. I've crossed that level crossing numerous times whilst visiting Brigg Garden Centre...
ivebeen in briig signal box
I loved your film young man, your personality and sense of humour really shone through. Keep it up.
What is a Brit England ticket?
Speaking of ticket machines, the last time I tried to "buy" a ticket to Okehampton from a ScotRail machine, it told me the station didn't exist. So if a train conductor tries to charge you an enourmous fine for jumping on without a ticket, it might be cheaper to ask for one to Okehampton instead and show the conductor a photo of your failed transaction.
Not quite as grand as Brig station in Switzerland
They should do this on Stockport to Stalybridge, still only one train a week there
Done that trip a few times back in the last years of the first gen 101 dmu's 😁
Ah yes, the more official Community Rail Group failing at the basics again. oh NNLCRP, what a laugh.
If you just missed the train at Brigg would you have any other public transport options to get back to civilization?
Bus to Scunthorpe and the railway station there.
As a thing I remember from some forums that someone was doing some digging about the line and that while Northern said that they didn't want to reduce service or usership at all a FOI request lead to a powerpoint from Northern being released by the DfT stating they would like to cut services
An excuse for closure. Are we seeing a Beeching version 2?
Evidently, for once, the DfT gave Northern short shrift and rightly so as it's not down to the contracted operator to withdraw. True, there can be variations to suit circumstances but the overall specification is from Government and it is incumbent on the potential operator to accept or not tender at all.
Where are you from? You sound Northern but not not quite a Geordie
Are you going to do Reading Green Park since it’s now opened. Still very nice including the weather 😊
Brigg Fair - one of the great English folk songs. ruclips.net/video/gMiws35bf_k/видео.html
the MP for Brigg should be sacked. The rail service is an insult
I never understand why people wearing thick glasses keep looking over the top of them ! Is it because they don’t like what they’re seeing ?
What about he line through Snaith a bit further north? Does that still get an infrequent service?
If your looking for a video about English railway with a wonderful quintessential English accent then how could you ever go wrong! How fabulous!
Watching Portillo on the telly. He never criticises poor/missing or axed services. prob because as transport secretary blame for not ensuring franchises were comprehensive and expansionist could be levelled at him
It's actually sad to say that, but in France it's pretty common. Before February, I was living in Bressuire, a 20'000 inhabitants city in the mid-west of France, and the entire service was 2 round trips per day. 1 of these starts from and terminates to La Roche-sur-Yon, on the opposite side of Bressuire, serving Cerizay, Pouzauges and Chantonnay. Chantonnay have 6 more trains between it and La Roche-sur-Yon, but Cerizay and Pouzauges only have one train monday to friday in afternoon. And what is the worst part ? The 2 trains intersect, so it is impossible to make a full round trip. As said, the round trip being in the afternoon, impossible to go to work or go to school. Fortunately, on weekends from May to September and every day in July and August, a "beach train" runs in the morning to Les Sables-d'Olonne, a seaside resort on the other side of La Roche-sur -Yon, but only started in Saumur and not Tours. Of course, the round trip La Roche-sur-Yon - Tours is limited to Bressuire - Tours in July and August. There are therefore never more than two trains a day on the track between Bressuire and Chantonnay, which is in a pitiful state. The service of this line is very complicated to understand, and I would really like France to be inspired by the United Kingdom, Switzerland or Germany where the trains are clocked on almost all lines and have good services. . Very good video, keep it up.
When did they destroy the level crossing?
It had wheel-operated gates the last time I was there.
After many years of failing, falling levels of service, northern Lincolnshire has done a little better recently. Almost daily through trains between Cleethorpes and Sheffield via Brigg adds to EMR's two hourly through service Grimsby (sadly not Cleethorpes) to Leicester as minor improvement. For real improvement how about.....
At least hourly stopping services Healing/Stallingborough/Great Coates both ways, extending 1/2 LKX to Lincoln services to Cleethorpes, and 2/3 services per day Barton to Lincoln/Newark/Sheffield via Brigg?
A joke service! Should be every two hours at the very least.
at that frequency even making the stations request stops would be an improvement on only one service each way per day
Wait, why does a Brit England pass cost THAT much?!
why such poor service?
Because the line has little practical use for the larger towns, since Grimsby/Cleethorpes have the hourly TPE service (when it’s not cancelled) to the ECML at Doncaster, then onto Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool. TPE renders this route mostly useless.
They were originally planning to close this line under the beeching axe. It was saved from closure due to Immingham needing good freight connections, so this route is now mostly only freight
@@BenMPMercer The line was never posted for closure under Beeching.
Huh. I’d always assumed it was, mainly due to the parliamentary service and the fact the TPE route via Scunthorpe makes this line mostly obsolete
That's not that good once a week I think it's very bad service
I’d love to collaborate with you sometime because I’ve been subscribed to you since you had 2k @nick bradley
