"I can't tell enemies and potted plants apart"
I guess that's why this channel is called "SNESdrunk"
There's a Kiefer Sutherland joke in there somewhere
Lol “Eye-Dee”
Please sign my Bill Laimbeer cartridge before you chuck it at me
Wolfenstein but B.J. forgot his prescription glasses.
😂🤣
Trivia: id programmed the SNES version themselves, because the guy who was supposed to do it just didn't deliver in time. So id paused their work on Doom for three weeks right in the middle of Doom's development to bash out a SNES port of Wolf3D.
IIRC they found out super late that in the fine print in their deal with Apogee and their sub-contracts they were obligated to release a SNES port of Wolfenstein, and the sole guy in their office working on it had been procrastinating like hell so they fired him and put Doom on hold to reluctantly finish the port out of obligation.
So they had to rush it? That explains a lot.
To be fair, that was a Nazi potted plant. As in, you could Nazi if it was a potted plant or a soldier.
This comment makes me Fuhrer-ious
People did that on the pc version all the time. That's why the plant looks like that Carmack made it as a fake guard from a distance if things got tense you might put all 99 bullets in that plant.
@@MunkiZee Yes. They make me hit-ler the roof.
I think I had a stroke while reading this.
@@RedfordWho you should really get that checked out. You'd know for sure if the either left or right side of your face goes numb. Be careful what you speak into existence. It might bite you in the ass.🙄
"MechWarrior looks alright and it's a first person shooter!" But it doesn't have to render walls. Anyone who's ever had to render walls on underpowered hardware can tell you that takes an assload of time.
This. MechWarrior is just using Mode 7 floors for faux 3D, something the hardware can do easily. Wolf-3D is forcing the SNES to do something it really, really isn't meant to do.
I remember seeing Wolfenstein 3D on my mom's friend's PC when I was a kid and being completely blown away. Then when I read about it in Nintendo Power, it was an instant buy for me as soon as it was released. We didn't have a computer powerful enough to run Wolfenstein so this was the next best thing for me and I played this thing all the way through. There's no way I'd ever revisit this version again, but at the time I was happy with it. Not nearly as unplayable as SNES Doom which I ended up taking back to the store for a refund.
Best voice sample: "COMIN' FOR YA!" ruclips.net/video/zGxrGwVP8uA/видео.htmlm49s
lmao that vo line is incredible.
Yessssss i was hoping I'd get to hear that line in the video. Thank you!!
As bad as snes doom is it was my introduction to doom I finished it on ultra violence too still debating on whether I should go for nightmare mode or not it took me about 11 months and several restarts to finish it on ultra violence
Why on Earth would you refund it...?
I played SNES Doom for the first time and I didn't find it to be nearly as unplayable as people claim. Now it wouldn't be my go to console port of the game thats for sure (GBA AND PS1 would be), but my biggest issue with the SNES port of Doom is the lack of any save, not even a password or level select.
It's like being the most short sighted FPS character ever, maybe there was an easter egg so you could put some glasses and everything became clear
There's a talk at GDC by the creators of this game about how they made the SNES port in only a few months. It's pretty awesome.
They actually made the SNES Port during Doom's development
One of my top 10 favorites for SNES. fun and a great challenge making it to the very end
There's a very impressive homebrew version of this game for the Sega Genesis, also done without any kind of coprocessor / helper chip.
it's better than the snes version
For some reason the SNES port of Wolfenstein 3D got quite a bit of hype in my elementary school, despite nobody there having played it. Many had played the DOS release of DOOM, but the SNES version of Wolfenstein 3D was still some kind of mysterious holy grail to be worshiped.
I had Wolfenstein on the Snes as a kid in the 90’s. Its the only thing I had. Believe it or not, I completed the game on the Snes.
Hey man, thank you for these. My country is in crisis and I'm going out there every day helping protestors survive and getting shot by the police. When I come back home, I just get in the bathtub with a cup of tea and watch some of your videos to relax. And you help me. So thank you, really.

I’m thinking Hong Kong?
Rodents of unusual size? Inconceivable!
I've taken a more forgiving stance on this port in recent years. The original game engine needed a processor that ran at a clock speed of at least 33mhz, to run smoothly. This port manages to run fairly smooth on a system with a processor clock speed that's roughly one tenth of that. From a technical standpoint, this port was well done.
John Carmack, ladies and gentlemen.
1. Looks at title
2. Yells "HELL NO!"
3. Still proceeds to watch video
4. Leaves thumbs up and comment.
The end.
I had never gotten into this port before. I'm so glad I had a 386 as a kid!
I just finished this game, on hard. I am so adding this to my resume.
Telling me I shouldn't play this anymore when I don't have any nostalgic feelings to it intrigues me to play it even more. And I shall. Soon.
The Jaguar version is actually one of the best ports of this game.
I never thought I would say that...or type it ..or think it.
The 3DO version actually tops the Jaguar one in my opinion. It contains the same level set from the SNES/Jaguar versions, but in addition has the entire DOS level set as well. Keeps the same upgraded features (map, new weapons, ammo upgrades), lets you strafe with the L and R buttons, and has a whole new redbook audio sountrack.
The Jaguar one might have a slightly better frame rate, but it's close.
lol 3DO is best
I have to say that some of the features from the 3DO and some of the features from the Jaguar ports are better (in my opinion). Though in my experience the Jaguar version runs smoother, there the SNES and 3DO port were lagging on some parts with many enemies, where the Jaguar even added more enemies to the game on a harder level. I just finished them all and I'm going to post videos of the whole thing on RUclips.
Always considered you my favorite channel, but you solidified it with a princess bride reference in a video about a snes game. That’s everything I hold dear
IIrc, id Software actually had to make this port themselves because the guy they contracted to create the port("Hamburger Bill") had failed to deliver. They took a short break from Doom development and hammered the port out in a hurry to meet the deadline. Early Doom prototypes used SNES Wolf 3d weapon graphics. From a technical perspective, it's still impressive. There's a good book (and audiobook) called Masters of Doom that covers id's history.
I really like seeing videos like this. The ones where you showcase a game that isn't worth playing not because it's particularly bad, but because time has just left it in the dust. While the game may have been perfectly fine at the time, by today's standards it just doesn't hold up.
That's the idea, thanks Travis
Without these games, we wouldn’t have the modern games. Progress.
Honestly, I feel the same way about Wolfenstein 3D, full stop. It was by no means a bad game and it both revolutionized and vitalized the FPS genre in a big way, but when you compare it to the games that came later, even Id's own follow-up:
--There's basically no difference between the weapons you have aside from how fast they fire bullets, and attempting to use the knife is basically suicide.
--There's not a lot of difference between the enemies aside from their HP and how fast they fire bullets, and they're ALL hitscan jackasses. (The mutant and dog/rat are the only real outliers, with the mutant being basically silent and the dog/rat being melee only, but you VERY rarely saw them compared to the other three types. Also I know a few of the bosses fire dodgeable projectiles, but most of their attacks are also of the 'hitscan jackass' variety.)
--Getting secrets is basically pointless as all you can really get from it are ammo (which is rarely in short supply), guns you probably already have if you're saving frequently to negate the penalty of losing a life, or a few extra health items.
Again, definitely not a bad game and I appreciate what it did, but time absolutely left it in the dust.
@@WeatherFan2009 Yeah, but this reminds me of an AVGN quote: "There's a difference between something that's old-school and something that's outdated. Old school is like Atari 2600: The games are primitive, but they're still fun to play. You can always go back to them. Outdated is something you never want to go back to."
Wolfenstein 3D on SNES is outdated. It was part of commendable efforts to bring FPS gaming onto consoles, but there's no reason to play it now except for curiosity.
I guess I'm biased a bit because I actually owned this game on SNES when it came out but I love it. It's obviously not as good as the PC version, but considering the it's an SNES port I think they did a pretty amazing job. I also love SNES DOOM, though it is difficult to play due to the framerate drops at times, I still admire the work to get a port of DOOM working on a 16-bit console.
I actually found a copy of Wolf 3D today and added it to my collection, I have plenty of fond memories of it, so it's nice to own a copy once again.
Mouse controls are actually pretty funny to play with. I have played and beaten the PC version of this game - but with the same mouse controls scheme and it was funny from beginning until final boss to play like that. :) Thank you for this video too!
i love the sounds when you pick up treasure. so satisficing
this is a relic of its time, just like the first dragon quest. Mistaking enemies in the distance is something typical for shooters, I remember playing Modern Warfare 2 and between my allies in dark green and my enemies in dark blue, I ended up shooting everybody.
It's better than the Doom port, and in a lot of ways has more features than the original Wolf3d. Like having 2 additional weapons and an automap. The giant rats are hilarious because they're just recolored dogs from the original.
That hilariously censored story, though, that triggered a bunch of SNES vs Genesis console war flashbacks for me, with how Genesis didn't censor games like this.
The SNES port is actually a port of the Jaguar version not the original DOS version.
I noticed you haven't done many of the big KOEI simulation games: Genghis Khan II, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, P.T.O... They have pretty deep gameplay, though the UIs aren't super intuitive without a manual. But you should check them out!
My first thought when the video started was "Gee, that sure looks like a faithful port of the PC version, I'm surprised the SNES could look that smooth and clean". Then I noticed the "Wolfenstein 3D (PC)" tag at the top of the screen and I was like "Oh... right, of course."
Once you mentioned there was a flamethrower weapon, I was very disappointed that there wasn't any footage of it, except for a brief clip of it being picked up.
I lost it at the Princess Bride reference.
me too :)
Perhaps his best reference yet
What was it? I missed it
I loved this game as a kid
Wolfenstein: Nearsighted Edition
John Carmack wrote the game engine for this version of Wolfenstein 3D and used some clever programming that utilized the SNES's mode 7. The Atari Jaguar port is based on the SNES game, and also uncensored. John Carmack wrote the engine for the Jaguar version as well.
I don't think it looks all that bad, honestly. Now, I'd never actually play it since I hate playing all FPS with controllers, but it looks like the devs did an OK job with what they had. Thanks for the video!
MechWarrior had no walls, though!
Nice princess bride reference. Your doing great man.
"Is this Jared Leto's next role after the Joker?!"
C'mon, the cover ain't THAT bad. . . 🤣🤣🤣
What do you mean? They take the burly ripped heavy gunner type look that was on the original dos boxart and change it so the character looks like Sandra Bullock as a soldier. Nothing wrong with changes sometime, but it's definitely alot less badass as the gunfire storm that is the dos boxart. Lol
Indie developers should be all over this, they could remake it look soooo good.
Snesdrunk posted? Today's gonna be good (:
All your videos are so interesting and funny as well.
I had this game on SNES before I got a PC. I remember trying to use the mouse for this, but usually gave up and just used the controller. I'm surprised that you didn't mention how heavily censored it is, no blood, all the Nazi symbols are removed, and even Hitler's mustache was removed from his paintings.
I’ve been playing the gba version and it really isn’t that bad
Really?? I was floored when he said this was posted to a hand held system. Glad it works!
@@WhispyWoods. The GBA port is surpringly faithful to the PC version. And runs ok, but the framerate is complete ass.
@@marcsm2008 impressive but not surprising all at the same time 👍
@@marcsm2008 And no music which is kind of unfortunate. There are definitely better attempts at FPS on the GBA but as an old DOS gamer I enjoyed being able to play a functioning Wolf-3D on the go back when it came out.
I didn't know this game had an SNES port, I used to play it on PC all the time. It is a shame it dosen't stack up to the version I played.
Oh man, I have so much nostalgia for this port. My friend Keith used to rent it all the time and we both loved it. We knew it existed for PC but had no way to play that version. Same with Doom, which I bought for my 32X.
Also the "COMIN' FOR YA" voice clip used to make me laugh all the time as a kid :D
Wolfenstein 3D SNES is the first way I played the game. Actually the speedrunning scene of the game just started and I managed to get the record for the first level.
'ih-d' OR 'eye-dee' works. I believe they did go by the latter of the two pronunciations early on, but it's nitpicky at best, so, really, whatever. The pronunciation is far less important than if the products are quality.
The SNES port of this game was a mixed bag, and yeah, it didn't age well.
Just mark it up under 'Ah, well', and call it a day, really. The port is busted beyond salvage.
It's 'Id', rhymes with lid. It's not I.D.
Love the channel, i've made a lot of purchases based on your videos, especially the English friendly super famicom lists. Quick question, as the list of snes games left to cover is getting smaller, have you ever considered adding super famicom games in the mix? Like individual reviews instead of list videos?
Yeah I'm well into that already, covering games like Melfand Stories, Ghost Sweeper Mikami, etc. ruclips.net/p/PLib8CA6AKJM_mj3d3rDjgppyWOF-FiUG-
@@SNESdrunk sorry, I didn't realize you already have. I only seen the English friendly list videos you did and thought that was it. My bad, thanks for the reply.
the snes version had 2 extra weapons and that was something....
It actually looks really good for the time, there was nothing much like this on the SNES except for that 3D section in Jurassic park. If you didn’t have a pc (and lots of people didn’t!) this was the next best option out there.
That R.O.U.S. joke made my morning xD
Total length of video: 290 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 3 secs.
1.03% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk."
The Nostalgia Factor - 👍💖👊
Still wanna know how BJ on the cover art got an M16 in the 1940s.
You should review the spin off of this game called Super Noah's Ark 3D. The story behind the whole thing is pretty good.
I can personally get past the graphics, and I'd say it's still fun enough to check it out as a curiosity (plus the fact that Id themselves made the Super Nintendo version, which is dope), though the 3DO version has the Super Nintendo stages and is far more fun
+1 for Princess Bride reference.
Looks better than Doom on SNES to me.
Early FPS in general would give me motion sickness.. I’m actually old enough to remember SubRoc on ColecoVision.. This is pretty damn impressive regardless.. I’m surprised they could make this playable at all
I like the PC DOS edition when the machine gunner dies a he says "Nein so was". 😂
Yes lmao "you gotta love those voice samples." 😃✌
Comin' For ya!!!!
"Achtu-- I mean, stop!"
HAUUAUAGH
Honestly, given the SNES hardware, those graphics really aren't that bad. I"m surprised that it even looks that good.
Thank you for what you're doing, I hope life if going well for you
hahaha, sound effects rule.
I actually think it's not that bad all things considered.
Ive been waiting for you to review this for a long long time,
"Have fun storming the castle!"
great review
Princess bride reference was great. Love that movie and book
I called it I.D. as a kid, someone probably yelled at me, bc I say both now.
Your Princess Bride reference is probably my favourite reference yet.
One thing tho, missed opportunity to couple this with a short conversation about how Super 3D Noah's Ark licened the Wolfenstein 3D engine to make an (hilarious all of them are) unlicensed SNES game.
I actually played it a couple of weeks ago on my snes classic and it was quiet a decent experience. The graphics arent that bad in real life and the controlls are good for a fps on snes. I would give it a try!
There are hundreds of 2.5D FPS indies on Steam! Many of them definitely look mediocre though.
You can play this game on wolfenstein 2. It's still a great game. I'm about to play it right now actually.
They could have created more 3D/first person games in the 16bits era.
This is one of those games that you pick up, are impressed that they were able to get it running at all, and stop playing it after ten minutes. It's impressive but not all that fun to play imo.
And I too hope you have a great rest of your day.
There's been games that I thought weren't recommends that you recommended, I could see your point though and with this, I absolutely see your point. If people are commenting on RUclips, they have some form of phone, tablet, or PC, all of which have much, MUCH better ports. There's NO reason to play this on SNES now unless you're just so obsessed with the series you must play every port, ever.
The Jaguar version is actually supposed to be really good
Yes, it's a very good port, imo the best togheter with the 3do one.
whoever put together that cover forgot what war this was suppised to be.
That was a good “sness” in the intro 🤣
I loved this game. And you got a whole shit load of levels. It sounds great in stereo sound too...same with DOOM. Great collectors pieces.
lol you should do Brutal Wolfenstein. Real talk though, RtCW is one of my top 10 faves.
Solid Princess Bride joke, love the video
I played through most of this game a few years ago. Something about the janky simplicity really drew me in. It also helps that this version of Wolfenstein 3d has an in-game map, because the levels are god damn labyrinths. That's something the DOS version sorely lacked.
In the rebooted series, which has voiced dialogue, BJ's family name is pronounced "Blas-ko-vich." Turns out he's of Polish descent.
Don’t underestimate the value of being able to “circle strafe” in this game. On the PC, you can’t turn and strafe at the same time. It’s a big plus for the SNES version!
Ahhh this game, and yes, this version, in particular, introduced me to motion sickness in games lol.
Nice reference to the princes bride 👍🏻
Are those voice samples reused in Earthworm Jim?
I wish to make sound art with those audio samples
I have that cartridge and play that game too many times in 90's... In my opinion, 25 years ago that game Wolfenstein 3D with another great title called Doom from SNES, are unbeatable! That's all...
I don't think it looks too bad. I would have been happy with this back in the day. Consoles were much more accessible for young gamers back then than pcs. So it's a fair tradeoff.
Never played it on snes, but judging by what I seen here, and given hardware limitations it doesn't look half bad.
Wow had no idea there was so many ports....played this on PC, remember there were multiple floppies just to install in DOS
I didn't even notice the pronunciation of id during the video. I used to pronounce it like I.D. for a long time, and so did my friends. I know better now, but I could definitely see myself slipping up and falling into old habits.
Id Software originally outsourced this game, but apparently the outsourcing company didn't know what they were doing and just made a huge mess. Id Software was then forced to pick up the slack during Doom development. They created this game in three weeks which is fucking insane.
I beat this game as a kid in the 90's, But with the help of "Nintendo power" Magazine. I am playing it now, Great game.I love the shit graphics and sound. It's a pixel eye candy show. By the way, you can strafe left and right with the "L and R" buttons on the SNES controller.
Nice Princess Bride reference!
No mention of Super 3D Noah's Ark? Guess that'll be its own video someday.
Super Noah's ark is basically this game but your shooting apples at goats lol
