Hey everyone - this video will premiere a 10am Adelaide time - living on the east coast now I had to set the time for 10.30 to align with the SA timezone.

The sound of chimes first rang out over Elizabeth exactly one year ago today, at 10am on Friday the 22nd May, 1970. Were you there? If you would like to support my work, please like this video, subscribe and share. Namaste, Will 🙏

That's 4 yo me @ 3:05, the kid in the bottom left, between the two blue dresses. Left blue dress is my mum holding my 18 month old sister.
You just never know what you may find on RUclips.

Ah, that is awesome. I love it when people see themselves - brings in the human element a lot more - not just facts and timelines. You might want to check out the Playford's Past Recollect Website Stevo - it's where I get most of my photos from. You never know you might find more of you or your family there 🙏

Hey buddy. Yes, in many ways it is. My hope is that this channel will help be a reminder of what has been lost due to lack of vision, and a lack of appreciating the role tradition and architecture play in grounding a community into a sense of its own history and culture. Buildings such as the Octagon should still be standing today, traditions such as the birthday festival, suburbs should retain their names instead of implying Elizabeth is something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. Part of this channel's existence is to give young people of the area a sense of their own history, a time before dilapidated shops, schools and lack of community services or connection. Without a sense of tradition and history communities lack identity - today's "leaders" seem completely oblivious to this, and as a result Elizabeth and its people have suffered greatly. Growing up surrounded by decaying buildings or vacant lots where schools once stood sends the message that no one cares. It destroys self esteem and a sense of belonging. So, while the buildings disappear, this channel is the digital history that will have to serve as a poor second to what should still be visible and available to today's generations. I'm all for progress, but progress for nothing more than profit, and completely at the expense of the past is foolish and, quite frankly, cruel. But I don't believe the Elizabeth story has been told conclusively, we're still here and as long as that is true there is always hope for the future. Things come full circle, and one day wise leaders will return. Until then, we fly the flag 🙏 Cheers for watching Martin - much appreciated 🙏🍷

@@elizabeththatwas Thanks so much for all of your efforts, and fantastic knowledge of the history of Elizabeth..I went to the boys technical high school..I was trying to find pictures of how it looked, I saw two, not very good. Another memory, like so many other schools that are gone..Governments are meant to work for communities, I don’t see that anymore..It’s all about taking away..Thanks again, God bless

A great clip and some brilliant still shots... A pity developers ruined the Town Centre.

Cheers mate. Yes, it's a great shame many view progress through the lens of demolishing everything - rather than preservation going hand in hand along with the progress. One need not negate the other, though sadly it often does

You could see that clock anywhere around the surrounding suburbs kilometers away, it became the Skyline of Elizabeth.

Yes. Apparently it originally chimed every 15 minutes, but public displeasure soon put a stop to that. Especially in 1970, those chimes must have travelled pretty far in the quiet of night.

I remember the chemist next to the library , the Elizabeth councils prime focus was community based , and genuinely serving the people , now it's all about political correctness and All the buzz words associated with the dumbing down of the masses

Yes, not just in Elizabeth/Playford either - I'm afraid the world at large is bereft of great leaders today - those who serve a grander vision even when it's unlikely the benefits won't be fully realised until after they're gone or out of office - too many think only of their own term and time. Everything comes and goes in cycles however, it won't always be this way, just as it hasn't always been this way. We as a people have become quite complacent over time also I think - leaders only get away with what they are allowed to get away with. Once the people have had enough they are forced to change - and will again I'm sure. In the meantime we do what we can in our own small way to inspire and affect change - and remain hopeful 🙏 I have very vague memories of the old pool hall - and weirdly none at all of Windsor Green, not even the fountain as it originally stood. I just must have never paid it any attention as a little kid. It must have been pretty hard to miss, though somehow I managed to...lol

@@elizabeththatwas yes I remember the pool hall , i stand to be corrected on this , but I believe the original CES and social security was located just below of the clock, then moved to Philip highway , it's interesting to note that the Elizabeth post office is the only original business remaining at the town centre , I remember the pet shop and Nick's barber shop next to the P O , Elizabeth star cycles still remains but not In it's original location, now near the former Levi's factory

@@vincentthao3497 yes, good point about the Post Office. I remember an odd little shop that I used to call the Rubber Shop - because it sold lots of products made of rubber - not sure if that was its' actual name though.
