To the commentors saying "there is no god" or "this is stupid", I urge you to remember that you are being hurtful, intolerant, closed-minded, and are not contributing towards any good. The Dalai Lama never claims to be a god, his people claimed him to be a reincarnated buddha figure. The word buddha only means "enlightened one". In his own words he claims himself to only be a monk, nothing more and nothing less.
The Dalai Lama himself renounced his given title and even fled his home. He hopes in time before he dies he can return to his people and live with them in peace. Never has he ever claimed to be anything more then a simple monk and the only reason he fled his home was to protect his people. In the teachings of ZEN anyone who claims to be a zen master is a fake for zen can't be mastered and everyone is constantly learning and striving for absolute peace.

If all leaders thought of things in this manner (i know this example is not referring to something particularly large, but it's the point of view that counts) we'd have a significantly better world to leave to our children.

I didn't think Russell Brand wasn't the most appropriate choice as an interviewer. But oh well, nothing seems to bother the Dalai Lama, which is wonderful, and really says something to me, even his ability to joke about drugs and alcohol, and be honest about his childhood. He is so wonderful! His happiness is a kind of proof of his holiness to me. And simple common sense.

I have gained respect for Russell Brand as I have taken time to listen to him speak over the past year or so. I used to think he was just a sex addict and former junkie. I now see there is a lot of good in him, he is fairly intelligent and sea to care about his fellow man.

Everyone on the planet has something special to bring to the world, including the unfortunate souls who get lost on paths of addiction. It bothers me when I hear grossly over-simplified assumptions and generalizations about people who have made bad choices in their lives by other people who have also made bad choices. Think about the last bad choice you made... Did you have to pay for it everyday of your life from that point on!? Shaming those who have fallen into this trap is only adding to their suffering, not to mention, inhibiting the potential gifts the person being shamed may have to offer from ever manifesting out from under the immense shame and scrutiny of others. Society is essentially robbing itself of the potential gifts found in others through it's own hypocracy. Most of us learn at a young age that choosing to do drugs will lead us to undesirable places in our lives... But the problem doesn't stop there... There are reasons people make the choices they make, and I guarantee that most addicts didn't become addicted to drugs because they wanted to be junkies. As a society, we need to practice a bit of humility in realizing that a person's mistakes in life doesn't necessarily represent who that person is fundamentally... And perhaps if we approached them with compassion and a willingness to understand and help, we could help those who are lost find their true selves and thereby contribute their unique talents to the world instead of slowly withering away in the dark being shamed for mistakes they pay for daily and tragically never realizing their potential in what they could have offered this world. This concept goes back to the old saying "one who lives in a glass house should never throw stones."

tekobari Yeah I think it's the case with the major religions. I'm not quite sure if we're on the same page but what I'm basically saying is that Buddha was uncompromising about ideology. He would say experience but don't believe anything or cling to ideas and systems. He would emphasize formlessness. So, for instance, he may not kill animals and/or eat their meat but will not say "I am vegetarian/vegan" or look down on you for eating meat or living differently from him. The Buddha has no interest whatsoever in changing anyone ... he is entirely fulfilled in his own being and realizes that everyone can have that, and would love to share it but will not go out of his way to do so. It's nothing really, just making up for missing the discussion I guess lol (of which I have to say I learned plenty about the Dalai Lama) Can't say I know Greek myself but I'm deeply interested in it mostly coz I have studied philosophy extensively and took it as a minor. I love Classical Greece and Plato, Socrates, Parmenides, and Heraclitus to name a few. I also love language and linguistics in general, especially etymology. Why is everyone getting so pissy? No wonder there's so much misery in the world. So many carry it with them wherever they go. And SO much ignorance. Many enjoy the Dalai Lama for his wisdom, even those not of the faith or Buddhists. According to tradition, he is the re-incarnated Gautama Buddha of Siddhartha Gautama, a guru or the head teacher of all things wise. He may have been picked politically, by the Chinese govt, but he himself is not political. He is the enlightened one or the Bodhisattva, one whose sole focus is the other. Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism is full of great insights into that which is primary or of greatest merit to the human condition. And it certainly is NOT contention, selfishness, foolishness, or indulgence in the material. Rather one is to look above the horizon to the eternities to that which is of greatest eternal import. Calling him, his holiness is only a title of honor, for God or gods do not play a major role in the Dalai Lama's ordinances and principles. You can look at them as more philosophies for life. I don't practice any of these religions but have found their philosophies over the years quite peaceful and insightful, running quite contrarily to the vile, malicious attitudes displayed on this post.

I'm a Buddhist myself and the respect Russel shows physically and emotionally, I have only been watching him for very few hours on the internet, all his other interviews he dominated the conversation and his behavior with Holy Dalai Lama is like sky and earth.
It shouldn't matter what someone believes in, so long as we are kind, loving, tolerant, and open-minded. To the commentors saying "there is no god" or "this is stupid", I urge you to remember that you are being hurtful, intolerant, closed-minded, and are not contributing towards any good. The Dalai Lama never claims to be a god, his people claimed him to be a reincarnated buddha figure. The word buddha only means "enlightened one". In his own words he claims himself to only be a monk, nothing more and nothing less.

I love His Holiness' fantastic description and view of partying. He says he thinks it's wrong but also wants the people doing it to have the right to do it if they like. If all leaders thought of things in this manner (i know this example is not referring to something particularly large, but it's the point of view that counts) we'd have a significantly better world to leave to our children.

I think this is the longest I have ever seen Russell Brand be quiet during an interview!!! Such quiet respect for this great man. You can really tell how much he wants to hear everything he has to say.

I didn't think Russell Brand wasn't the most appropriate choice as an interviewer. But oh well, nothing seems to bother the Dalai Lama, which is wonderful, and really says something to me, even his ability to joke about drugs and alcohol, and be honest about his childhood. He is so wonderful! His happiness is a kind of proof of his holiness to me. And simple common sense.

Everyone on the planet has something special to bring to the world, including the unfortunate souls who get lost on paths of addiction. It bothers me when I hear grossly over-simplified assumptions and generalizations about people who have made bad choices in their lives by other people who have also made bad choices.
Think about the last bad choice you made... Did you have to pay for it everyday of your life from that point on!? Shaming those who have fallen into this trap is only adding to their suffering, not to mention, inhibiting the potential gifts the person being shamed may have to offer from ever manifesting out from under the immense shame and scrutiny of others. Society is essentially robbing itself of the potential gifts found in others through it's own hypocracy.
Most of us learn at a young age that choosing to do drugs will lead us to undesirable places in our lives... But the problem doesn't stop there... There are reasons people make the choices they make, and I guarantee that most addicts didn't become addicted to drugs because they wanted to be junkies. As a society, we need to practice a bit of humility in realizing that a person's mistakes in life doesn't necessarily represent who that person is fundamentally... And perhaps if we approached them with compassion and a willingness to understand and help, we could help those who are lost find their true selves and thereby contribute their unique talents to the world instead of slowly withering away in the dark being shamed for mistakes they pay for daily and tragically never realizing their potential in what they could have offered this world. This concept goes back to the old saying "one who lives in a glass house should never throw stones."

I can't understand how anyone dislikes it. tekobari Yeah I think it's the case with the major religions. I'm not quite sure if we're on the same page but what I'm basically saying is that Buddha was uncompromising about ideology. He would say experience but don't believe anything or cling to ideas and systems. He would emphasize formlessness. So, for instance, he may not kill animals and/or eat their meat but will not say "I am vegetarian/vegan" or look down on you for eating meat or living differently from him. The Buddha has no interest whatsoever in changing anyone ... he is entirely fulfilled in his own being and realizes that everyone can have that, and would love to share it but will not go out of his way to do so.

Can't say I know Greek myself but I'm deeply interested in it mostly coz I have studied philosophy extensively and took it as a minor. I love Classical Greece and Plato, Socrates, Parmenides, and Heraclitus to name a few. I also love language and linguistics in general, especially etymology. So, you know how some English words have a Greco-Latin origin, I have a fascination with that that I can't really explain lol. The name is Logia Ex (as in Logia Ex Machina).

Yes, I completely agree with what you said about Buddha's beliefs, particularly appropriate regarding what the disagreement before you arrived was about. A guy wrote that the Dalia Lama shouldn't be called Holiness, in part because he ate meat. That no Buddhist clergy is allowed to eat meat.
The guy didn't grant that it was a basic form of address, such as the Honorable Justice or Senator; the Reverend Whomever, etc. That went nowhere fast so I skeddadled, then you arrived. Pleasure to meet you. I'll follow you if you don't mind.

I don't understand there r lots of people here and their thoughts r strongly dragging by negativity.. His holiness Dalai Lama had been gone through so much hard times and his people in Tibet .. He is very precious to his people and from other world too.So,obviously he should be in a good and safe place like every other leader does.. People who don't know and just say it without knowing . Listen, He is vegetarian and he established various schools and homes for thousands n thousands of his children who escaped from Tibet and wants real education. They were given everything that parents should give..BUT NOT MEAT if anybody don't know.. And same for his monasteries..whoever think he is getting donations and having luxurious life . I know him how his life style is..I am proud of him. I wish him long long live.. Everytime when I have bad times or get disturbed ,I think of him and naturally I get inner positive strength that I solve all my problems. We really want more people like you..
I feel sorry for the Lama to have to pander to his planned PR events like this, but he takes it so graciously! Truly the greatest example of a sell out the world has ever known. He is the reincarnation of the modern adaption of holiness and I commend him for rolling in the media mud and still coming out on top.

Just a little tidbit I picked up: China told America that they weren't allowed to meet wtih Dalai Lama because of relations. Obama ignored and meets him anyway. Judge that however you want I just thought it was a little typical of world leaders to be so petty and misaligned. I also applaud Obama for doing what he wants regardless of international relations. Especially because there is so much anti-media against him.
China does the intimidation technique to every country where Dalai Lama goes. Thankfully I'm yet to know of any who comply to the ridiculous threats. Though sometimes instead of "official" meetings they become "unofficial". Its a sad old broken record, China calling this sweet and funny wise old man the "wolf in sheeps clothing."

Why is everyone getting so pissy? No wonder there's so much misery in the world. So many carry it with them wherever they go. And SO much ignorance. Many enjoy the Dalai Lama for his wisdom, even those not of the faith or Buddhists. According to tradition, he is the re-incarnated Gautama Buddha of Siddhartha Gautama, a guru or the head teacher of all things wise. He may have been picked politically, by the Chinese govt, but he himself is not political. He is the enlightened one or the Bodhisattva, one whose sole focus is the other. Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism is full of great insights into that which is primary or of greatest merit to the human condition. And it certainly is NOT contention, selfishness, foolishness, or indulgence in the material. Rather one is to look above the horizon to the eternities to that which is of greatest eternal import. Calling him, his holiness is only a title of honor, for God or gods do not play a major role in the Dalai Lama's ordinances and principles. You can look at them as more philosophies for life. I don't practice any of these religions but have found their philosophies over the years quite peaceful and insightful, running quite contrarily to the vile, malicious attitudes displayed on this post.
