My biggest concerns are from a digital standpoint. These vehicles are easily hacked and I loathe the idea of government officials having a kill switch to my main mode of transportation. If I'm suspected of a crime that I didn't commit, or say I'm guilty of having the wrong political opinions., I don't want my car to lock itself and deliver me to the police station.

A legitimate concern, although self-driving and government-enforcing are two different things. The tech to disable your car is available now, and being exploited by hackers already (saw a presentation on it 10 years ago).

They can already do this though. At any point, if they wanted to, the authorities could just come get you from your house right now and lock you up. I don’t see how this technology would make that any different.
Also, people had that same fear with mobile banking, and look at where we are now.
My main complaint is I will not be in control of the car yet authorities and manufacturers will want me to be financially responsible for any accidents that a self-driving vehicle I own will be involved in. I would gladly use if financial responsibility were the responsibility of the manufacturers.

that's my issue too, and you can say, even with horse carriage you still had control, you told the horse where to go. with self driving, the computer decides for you, and i do not trust computers when they hold my life in their hands.
@@Reubentheimitator6572 That is a 1000% justifiable complaint and argument. However I will not willingly let "IT" drive me unless I feel I'm at a point that my faculties are poor. I have actively avoided too many accidents to count simply by accessing others poor driving and looking far ahead of me. Sometimes it comes down to just seeing a cars body damage and knowing to stay alert to them... There's a reason that car has body damage.

I’m not scared of self driving cars, I don’t care if some people want to have them, as long as they don’t try and force me to have one myself. I like to drive, and work on my own vehicles. I can’t do that with all the computers, so as long as no one forces me to get rid of my old trucks, I don’t care if they want new cars, be they electric or even self driving.

Over 7000 pedestrian deaths in 2022. That’s just pedestrians. And those aren’t random people. Those are our fellow citizens. Our friends and neighbors. You’re telling me that you wanting to have a truck and work on a truck is more important than our safety?
My nephew works for one of these companies. They have had their contracts terminated in every state they have been operating in due to safety failure. To add the same is happening with many other companies. I don’t think this will take place any time soon.
True, the technology just isn't ready yet. One day it will probably be great, though.

@@vandertuber no, the incredible development we've seen thus far was enabled by a great economic period which is on the way out soon to be gone for centuries. It was cheap labor from China and cheap resources from russia dumped into the world economy that made all this possible. Now russia is out making everything more expensive and china is aging too fast. automation won't catch with population crash. we'll get poorer and inovation will slow down. AI is only getting more expensive and with rising cost of resources and labor that'll stall development of these crazy projects. Self driving vehicles have nothing to show for it after billions dumped into it. with cheap venture capital dissapearing this type of stuff will dissapear too.
I love driving, it's one of my passions, what scares me about self driving cars is the government shoving them down our throat. If electric vehicles are so awesome, why didn't the postal service not change to them? Why not make more gov vehicles electric? Why not make the big corporations with their huge profits buy them first? Also let the people who want them, to get them. We tax payers already had to pay for incentives to buy electric, yeah, stop that too.
If you love driving you should go to a race track in the future.
Driving on your own will not be considered safe and a generation from now kids will think we are irresponsible if we drive in traffic manually.
I have heard of no proposal to force driverless vehicles on people (unlike electric vehicles). It will be just like there was no government push to get rid of landline telephones, people did that by themselves when they saw that early cell phone adapters were happy with their phones.
The difference is that once safe mass-produced self-driving vehicles exist (which isn't the case yet), hesitant people will see from the early adapters how safe, reliable, and convenient they are, and decide that they want one. Unlike electric cars, which are being pushed primarily out of a belief that they are better for the planet, we are working on self-driving vehicles because they will be safer and more convenient for the owner.
I own a Tesla and love it! But I can also see why it's not for everybody...yet. Electric cars will get better range, faster/more plentiful charging, while dropping in price. Make the switch when you are ready, but be alert because it might happen sooner than you think!
@@ledzeppelin1212 It depends on the situation. Are you able to recharge your vehicle at home overnight? An electric vehicle would make more sense for people who can do so. Personally, I live in an apartment, and have no ambition to buy a house anytime soon. Overnight, I park my car in a "carport" (with overhead shelter, but no walls), with no power supply available to change my vehicle overnight, not even a simple 120V AC connection. This makes EVs far less practical.
@@jeremykraenzlein5975 Yeah, I can charge at home and park in a garage that never gets below 40 degrees (as cold weather hurts range). I've lived in apartments for the past ten years of my life (before buying a house) and it would have been difficult to handle an EV in that situation. The solution is the 600-mile range cars that can charge in ten minutes. They already exist but it will be at least ten years until that technology is mass-market affordable.
Driving is a learned skill. Reliance on self driving cars will remove that skill. Eventually, if we allow our skills to be replaced with self automation, we will lose purpose.

I don't miss having to manually wash my clothes. I won't miss having to drive, if I want to drive I'll play a video game so when I screw up nobody is hurt. Of course self-driving has to actually be safer but that's not going to be hard when you consider how many drunk drivers there are.

I enjoy driving, I drive for a living. When I'm not driving Monday thru Friday I'm usually out on one of my motorcycles. And I DEFINITELY ain't getting on a self driving motorcycle.

I was nearly rear ended by one in AZ (test market). A fire truck was coming so everyone was pulling over. Except the driverless car behind me that was coming up on me too fast so I pulled up farther and it swerved around me then pulled over. Guess it didn’t “hear” the sirens.🙄

Wait until everything is driverless. Then it will all be seamless. They will all be connected on a network together. One giant robotic ecosystem.
Every car will know instantly when an autonomous fire truck is coming through and they will get out of the way seamlessly. There will be no need for a siren. The fire truck will be able to get to the site at a much higher rate of speed with near perfect safety for the firefighters and others on the road. More people will be saved because of the reduction in transport time. Everything will be working in unison like one giant computer. It will truly be amazing and revolutionary, and you’ll be surprised at how much safer you’ll feel.
@@michaelslifecycle And years ago we thought there would be flying cars by the year 2000. I would think driverless cars that are getting in wrecks aren’t a very good sales pitch. Kinda like EVs that burst into flames that can’t be put out.

The government is working on instituting reduction of independence on 'normal' cars, such as remote shutoff devices, speed regulators, etc.

This video seems off base. I rarely hear anyone saying they are "afraid" of self-driving cars. Mostly it's that they don't work as well as we need them to, there are fuzzy/blurry lines between accountability and insurance, and overlapping it with EV modernization is not helping. Also, if Apple pulled funds from their AppleCar product - there's probably a strong indicator that we're nowhere near the self-driving revolution. I don't think we would mind, it's that it's not there yet. (Funny argument I heard was - police (or a hacker!) could stop your car or even cause a crash from a remote destination, and while it's true - it's highly unlikely). Nothing wrong with people wanting to have mechanical controls in their cars, and drive themselves. It's like a smart phone and a "dumb" phone. To each their own. Different products for different people.
Where I live there are still horse drawn vehicles and carriage makers with so Amish here. I am a little upset about the abandonment of manual transmissions, or as some people like to call them millennial anti-highjacking systems. Now there are very few manual transmission cars, but they have made automatic transmissions easier to control.
That depends. If they are controlled by anyone other than the driver, they won't sell. If the government controls them, I won't buy.

They already do. Do you carry a smartphone in your pocket everywhere you go? It's an even better way to track you than your car because it follows you even when you are away from your vehicle.

Are we talking about cars with an "autopilot" feature that can still be manually driven, or cars that are exclusively self-driving? Because if it's the latter, not going to happen anytime soon. Cars still have to operate in snow, ice, and dirt roads, and if they have trouble navigating a "good" road it's going to be a long time before they can hold up to a bad one.
There are already full self driving cars in certain areas, and if you look at the progress Tesla has made in the last year you’ll see that we’re not far off from you having one.
Fair point, but you could make the argument that humans have to be able to traverse those same roads as well. So who is going to make more mistakes is the real question. I’d trust a computer much more when it comes to quick decision making. Not to mention that it will be near perfect decision making. Any bit of slip on ice and the car will notice it is off balance. The car will notice any tiny loss of traction in the wheels and react accordingly and instantly. It may not be perfect, but if it is safer then we must agree that it should become prevalent in our society.
If the technology came out 50 years ago, it would be more easily accepted because things were made better. Today, we are experiencing a lot of vehicle recalls because of some failure. Vehicles are being made more cheaply and that is a problem. Company goes with a new sensor because it's cheaper than the sensor currently used and suddenly you have a failure. There's been some failures already: "The data, which was reported to the NHTSA beginning in July 2021, showed that Waymo vehicles had the highest number of crashes, 150, among vehicles equipped with automated driving systems.Aug 21, 2023" Compare that with the total numbers of Self driving autos on the road compared to human driven automobiles.
Just like auto pilot on aircraft the same will be done to self driving cars , but the question is can or will government or bad folks be able to take control of those vehicles . Imagine during a lockdown your car will not start thus not allowing you to be mobile . With every " smart "invention comes the possibility or probability that the government will have control over your device like when Calif took control of " smart " thermostats and raised the setting due to electrical shortages .
This is my concern. I don't want government officials having a kill switch to my method of transportation.
It is only a matter of time that after self driving cars become widespread enough, that some politician will try to ban regular cars in the name of safety. And they have already mandated every car after 2026 have an impaired driver detection/kill switch. You really think they don’t have a back door into that system to disable the car remotely? I just don’t trust them.
The technology I am more concerned about job replacement is AI. Globalization already put so much stress on labor due to increased supply, competition and outsourcing. Moreover, you have global cooperatives who sole purpose is to cut costs and increase productivity. It’s hard for me to imagine AI would be used to actually benefit normal people rather than causing harm.

With a horse, you can drive even if you're intoxicated or asleep (as long as you don't fall off). There's no speeding tickets, no parking tickets, no problems driving without a licence, registration, or insurance...
While I'm not opposed to self-driving cars... where I drive, it's probably not a good idea! Plus, there is the whole towing of various types of trailers. And i dont think they would be good at launching a boat!😂

I would have apprehension about riding in a self-driving car for the same reason I have apprehension about riding in any vehicle driven by another person. I'm a good driver and a recovering control freak.
But as for driving on a road with self-driving cars I have very little apprehension. I find robots more predictable than people. In a few decades when self-driving cars become commonplace road accidents will have probably dramatically decreased.

I'm a retired Truck Driver, and I would not be worried about companies using self-driving Semi's. I've been all over the country, and squeezing into some of these sites/docks takes talent and timing. Not to mention, road and weather conditions that are always changing.
Now what about the security and safety of self-driving cars about manufacturers and companies being able to remotely control/disable them? Let alone hackers who could already do the same while for non-self driving cars.
What's stopping any government from arbitralily shutting down your self-driving car without consent or warrant? Look at the banking system in Canada during the Trucker protest.

I'm afraid on who is programming them/controlling them. If a self-driving can can't avoid an accident and has to choose between a motorcyclist wearing a helmet and one without it would choose the one with the helmet because he/she has the highest chance of survival, but does this mean driving without a helmet will be safer in the future? Will those cars know who's in the car and make those same decisions over the value of the passenger... Somebody has to program it.
I think this video is conflating fear of automation with the fears of self-driving cars. Yes, automation always improves the job market, and yes, people are always afraid of the unknown. But I don't think the concerns with self-driving cars have anything to do with automation or being unknown. The only self-driving cars in existence so far are private vehicles. I don't think many people are yet concerned about job losses.
Still, I think the concerns are more along the lines of people sleeping instead of monitoring their auto-pilot. And the fact that an auto-pilot always requires monitoring, so I'm quite skeptical of the viability of AI for self-driving taxis or buses.
I'm no expert in AI, but I do understand how it works, and I will more readily trust myself or some other person to drive me somewhere, than any AI. And to be clear, this has nothing to do with any kind of fear of Skynet, that's complete BS. What I fear is the unreliability of AI. It's fine if that it makes lots of mistakes generating pictures or text, or vacuuming the floor, but it's not fine if it makes mistakes out there on the road.

The problem with automobiles comes down to safety and responsibility. As long as they sort things out about who is responsible for car crashes and whether third parties can reroute the car or lock the car. I am fine with it.

For a future episode - why are people afraid of micro nuclear reactors for power generation? They use less resources than solar and are more reliable than both solar and wind. Not only that, but those that use liquid salts as a coolant, can be used to directly heat homes as well.
The horse was not the pilot of a carriage, it was essentially the drivetrain. A human was the pilot.
Kind of, except the horse could still think for itself and wouldn’t cause a giant crash if the driver fell asleep or had had too much alcohol (most of the time)
You clearly don't have much experience with horses. The 1000 lbs. horse is defiantly the one with control. The 100-200 lbs. human just makes suggestions.
Many, many stories of horses driving their passed out human home, cause it knows the routine and walks the route...

It's a moot point. It won't matter that self-driving cars are no more dangerous than human driven ones, until they are demonstrably far, far safer, liability lawsuits will keep them off the roads. Given that they're still not even AS safe, it's going to be a good long while until you see them. As for self-driving trucks, they're still going to need someone to ride along or you're going to get an explosion of hijackings.
First minute of the video is already dumb, the horseless carriage caused more death than a horse drawn carriage. It is significantly less safe.
It's not an issue with job loss...it's an issue of freedom. Once you relinquish your control of your vehicle, you hand the control over to some other entity...most likely the government via regulation. Then you'll find it's tied to some ridiculous carbon footprint scheme or social credit score and THEY will decide where and when you can travel

How many such checks are done on human drivers? Exactly zero. I do not have current data but self-driving cars will keep improving, humans will not. AI is bound to outcompete humans on this task.
These vehicles should have an absolute manual override and be unable to be accessed remotely. If they don't they are most definitely dangerous.

Computer visual recognition simply isn't anywhere as robust as people think it is, and never will be.
My question would be why do we not yet have all vehicles to communicate speed and direction in a reasonable radius? Computer or human driven, I believe the solution to co-existence of these two types of vehicles, and enhance safety on the road overall, will be to add transponders to all cars. That would enable all vehicles in the immediate vicinity to adjust their speeds to accommodate other vehicles wishing to merge or even have everyone stop safely should something go awry.
Sounds like a really huge amount of tech that can go bad on a car and be expensive to fix.
@@katydid2877 We have had this kind of tech in civilian aircraft and the shipping industry for decades, so it is fairly low tech compared to what is already in modern cars that have electronic systems and interfaces, not even looking at self-driving systems. The Tesla trucks say that one of their biggest benefits will be that you can have them "connect" and "swarm" or travel in a close traveling convoy.

Self driving cars and regular cars too are highly ineffcient compared to rail, buses, and even bikes; both in energy usage and cost.
Homeless people don’t sleep in my car or pee in my car. Criminals don’t assault people in my car. Really hot weather, really cold weather, snow and rain make public transportation torturous and make bike riding impossible. If I get 5 bags of groceries from the store how am I getting home on a bus or a bike?

The conditions and environment of public transportation prevent many from actually using it. It’s irrelevant that my car is, to you, “inefficient” when it’s the only safe mode in my area.

Love your content Nick. I’m a big fan, but there’s a glitch in your matrix on this one. Do a quick internet search for self driving cars confused/accidents/fail and you will realize there is much more to consider than what you presented in this oversimplified presentation. There is way too much at risk to trust glitchy computers with my safety whilst speeding along the highway at breakneck speeds in close proximity to other vehicles with equal or greater kinetic energy. Computers are only as good as the fallible human who made/programmed its components. Self-driving cars will open up a whole new category of study for how “human-factors” are resulting in more human tragedy. Thanks, but I’ll gladly bear the burden of being responsible for my own motoring safety before I farm it out to more Silicon Valley big-tech who definitely does not need more control over my life. When my computer glitches on my desk, I can walk away. When it glitches at 70 mph with me along for the ride??? No thanks, Jack. That’ll be a hard pass.
My next car is going to be a used car from the '70's that has a carburator and no computer. I don't want to be spied on or controlled.

I love technology, but even I wouldn't want a self-driving car.
My only concerns with self-driving cars are, first, taking power away from the driver and giving it to someone else, and second, the impact on the economy.
The first concern deals with drivers not having control over their vehicle. If cars are tied into a central network, could the network be hacked? Would it be a target for cyber threats? Imagine if Hamas was able to hack the system and then tell everyone's cars to accelerate to max speed and then ram into something. You would have hundreds of thousands of accidents in a few seconds time.
I am not much more comfortable with the government (or a private corporation) having control of my car. While it is hypothetically true that "as long as you do nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about", I have far too many examples of corrupt politicians, leaders, bureaucrats, corporate employees, and other entities for me to be comfortable turning control of my car over to them.
Also, as someone who lives in a rural setting, without roads, will self-driving cars work for getting around a farm, ranch, or just large piece of acreage? I can easily punch an address into my GPS system, but what if I want to haul some lumber to a back corner of my property to build a shed?
And the second concern is one people are already aware of, which is putting hundreds of thousands of people out of work. There are two key differences between now and past events when it comes to changes in the market.
First is that in the past there was plenty of unsatisfied market demand that people could fill. I don't think that is the case anymore. I think that we have reached a point where a reasonably employed person can purchase most everything they want. Once the ability of the economy to produce exceeds the desire of the populace to consume, you can't create new jobs to employ people because there is no more demand for the market.
The second difference is that in the past humans had a critical advantage over machines, which was the human brain. We could automate simple and repetitive tasks, and we could use machines to do heavy lifting that humans couldn't, but at the end of the day we could not replicate the flexibility and creativity of the human brain. But AI is starting to come into the market now. It won't be long before computers can do almost everything that humans can. A situation which has terrifying implications for employment in the future.

Yes, losing jobs creates jobs. Back in 1800, 80% of US jobs were in agriculture. Today it’s less than 1%, but people still has jobs.

@@zachb1706 Thanks 😎. Yeah, my wife just got a free trial of full self-driving in her Tesla. It's far from perfect and I wouldn't pay money for it now, but it's impressive how good it actually is and it's only going to improve.
Fears actually weren’t overblown. Thousands of people are still dying because of automobile accidents.
Cars also solved the problem of ankle-deep horseshit on the streets of most cities.

Can you talk about abortion - especially the one child policy in China?
The technology is still gradually improving, so bit by bit, the safety concerns will be addressed. With trucks, there are even more technical challenges, so if you're a truck driver, your job is quite secure until at least 2030, but there will be self-driving trucks someday. Of course, there are many people who love driving, but there are others for whom a car is just a way to go between point A and point B five days a week and to point C on weekends. For them, driving is just another chore and wouldn't mind letting a computer do all the work for them. For this reason, self-driving cars will become common in the future.
As someone who spent many years fixing computers, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have apprehension about what happens when one of these cars has an issue. But considering how bad human drivers are, the benefit may outweigh the cost. My greater concern is that the government will step in and make them mandatory. I like driving. I like being in control. I want to maintain the freedom to do so. I’m worried the government will see how well it works and seem humans unfit to drive. In your example, I want the right to ride in my horse drawn carriage, should I desire to do so.
I like this idea. Let's gaslight the general public that autonomous vehicles are superior to tank car values so we can buy Lamborghinis for $5,000

Nick, I love your take on things, and perhaps you've considered this but haven't made mention of it. The OT/ICS space is *notoriously* shitty at defensive security, and that's assuming the software writers and businesses who pay them don't leave themselves back doors to act as proxies for the state, or whatever other form of mischief might compel them.

Most car and PLC manufacturers are merely neglectful when it comes to security, and that's bad enough. I wouldn't trust MS, Google, Oracle, or Apple in this area as far as I could throw any of them.

What a weird video - it may interest the man to know that a human was actually in charge of a horse-drawn carriage (otherwise, why use reins to steer and stop/start the horse) in the same way humans are in charge of driving cars. Yes, some "fears" in the past were misplaced or assuaged later on but that is nowhere close to a comparison on cars driving themselves. The premise might have made a good video, but he left out all the major talking points and real-world accident data out there.

I am 5 years clean off meth. I was a active user from 15 to 28. I did nothing with my life until I got my cdl. What other job out there pays 6 figures that I don't need to live off student loans to aquire while putting my family's life on hold for years. If my truck can drive it self my entire family will go from being well off on one income to struggling on 2. Learn to code my aching ass. What do you recommend for someone like me when my job dissappear? I have no other LEGAL marketable skills.

While I sympathize with some of the concerns with self driving cars, I’m all for it. Even if the machines make mistakes every once in a while, they will almost certainly make less mistakes than the brain dead drivers that surround us.

Newer cars have cruise control, lane assist, auto steering, auto braking, auto shifting. If you have a new car, you basically already have the self-driving features.
It might take over in future, but that should be the people's choice and should not be forced upon people by predatory governments.

I have no doubt that in the next ten years, self-driving cars will be, statistically, far safer than human drivers.
That's not my worry about them. My worry is that they will allow the government and the corporations who are in bed with them to veto our travel desires. What if your vacation is deemed to be not an essential use of energy? What if there are places your self-driving car will be prevented from taking you... even if you are driving? What if 15 minute cities are enforced by prohibiting the cars from leaving? Do you know about the coming kill-switches and drunk driver cameras aimed at every driver's face from the dashboard? Like I say, safety is not the problem. It's privacy, government spying, and dictatorship that lies down this driverless road.
But no one was banning horse carriages in 10 years...
Frankly, I am surprised by your position on this. Self-driving cars may prove viable under certain circumstances (i.e., on the highway, in their own lane, similar to commuter lanes) but the overawing threat here is to our personal agency. As a society, we have a glut of "smart devices" all cuing up to do our heavy lifting for us and yes, some of the things offer a benefit but I contend that agency IS LIKE A MUSCLE, if we don't use it we lose it. Our guns (smart guns anyone?) and our vehicles are two instances where I will never surrender my control/responsibility to a machine or another man.
The 1% makes horrific profits with this current grift, because once again, the poor and what’s left of the middle class will pay the bills for whatever they and they’re paid off government officials, and Shills tell us what we need to know
My worry about self driving cars basically boils down to the developers of the cars incorporating some version of the trolley problem where the programmers of the cars program them to sacrifice their passengers in certain situations. It is not that I don't think that the cars can be made to be safe. It is that I question whether they WILL be made safe, given that most of them are being developed by historically woke companies headquartered in heavily woke areas.
Given the recent political climate, is it really so strange to think that a woke software dev might program a self driving car to prioritize a black or brown person on the side of the road or in another car over myself or my family?
That will never happen. It’d be too complicated to program in edge cases like that, rather than let the car keep the occupants safe at all times

I don't think there is that much fear about the vehicles themselves. It's more about Orwellian control and morality issues. I guess they will be eventually solved with some tradeoffs (like current litigation in case of tech disasters) but it will take time. The worst that can be done is to politicize the issue.
