Great riff from Slash. He always made a great effort when collaborating with others back then.
The first time I saw this video I knew he'd bolt GN'R. Once Slash started working with Michael Jackson and Lenny Kravitz he became a in-demand session musician. Which probably made Axl into a raving lunatic.
swiftslick Calling Slash a "session musician" is nothing but an insult to one of the most influential guitarists in the last 3 decades....the guy is a fucking legend and he didn't achieve that by being a session musician.
Richard Fernandes
-- That's what he became for these albums. Reading comprehension. Try it sometime. Idiot.

The riff, the bass, the drums, the horns... those lyrics! Lenny and Slash! LEGENDARY!
I agree and it’s 2023 and I’m still listening to this!!! #mymamasaid
Yup
Absolutely.
2024 and here I am
That guitar solo (along with the solo from 'Sweet Child' by G&R) is the reason I picked up the guitar. Over 30 years later, I'm still playing.
Just think: The smooth, early-70s retro R&B of "It Ain't Over Till It's Over" and the Funk/Metal workout of "Always On The Run" on the same album. Lenny Kravitz is a true music artist.
One of the best guitar riffs ever made

Congratulations on your rock and roll hall of fame nomination Lenny. Good luck.
"My mama said that it's good to be natural," he sings, gesturing to his hair. Couldn't be more perfect.
don't say that fuckin another man is "natural" lol
Amen.
Slash's solo is something supernatural
The groove can go on and on and on.. good stuff.

Yeaaa
Good analogy. Thanks, 44bonkers.

White man invented the guitar, black man invented the blues! together they came up with rock music! ✌🏻❤

Lenny always on a run with his life with music. this is history of him. A rock legend.
Lenny Kravitz + Slash = Sexy
It's 2022 and this riff still rocks!!
Totally!
It will never be any other way.

Lenny should've been picked for the Superbowl not Rihanna Devil worshipping music 😤 😒
it's a ripoff of shakey ground by the temptations. The guitar lick is eddie hazel from parliament Funkadelic

believe it or not, I'm dedicating this song to my mama. she taught me alot of things when I was a kid, and at the age of 50, she passed away in November 21, 2007. :( love you, mama. I hope you enjoy this song in Heaven.
It’s hard to find music like this nowadays
Because this song is paying homage to the Funk of the 70's early 80's Slash wrote alot of funky riffs, But he couldn't use them for Guns...So he passed them on to lenny..There is no more funky Music..Notice the horns reminiscent of Tower of Power, Earth wind and Fire, and Parliament Funkadelic, and of course James Brown

Both half black and Jewish like that Family Guy joke about Lenny.
@@whenfatkillsfat803 Iused to have a side by side pick of both men with their mothers back in the day. I posted it to the now defunct "Google plus" social media platform.
People were so shocked out how dark both their mothers were in regard to how light both turned out to be. A lot were shocked to find out Slash was Half black
Absolutely LOVE the riff, something very few modern songs have.
7 years later, things have only gotten worse buddy.
Rockin' track. Lenny's vocals, those horns, Slash's solo, the soulful bass, the drums. Excellent package.
Lenny became the coolest man in Rock music as soon as this album hit.
That was almost 30 years ago and he still has the title even though he's always on the run.
Lenny should've made an entire album with Slash.
R Brandon P that would be awesome.... I think anything Slash and Lenny collaborated on would rock
I bet they must have some tracks recorded.. after all they were in school together
Mauro Rodrigues that's cool I never knew Slash and Lenny went to school together
Anthony G slash was born in the U.K. ? Bristol I thing ? Great autobiography, read it years ago. I thought Lenny stayed in the good old U.S.A in his childhood 👍🏻
I think he went to a British Boarding school where rich kids went. His mother is actress Roxie Roker and his father is a movie producer.
Awesome riff by Slash.
Doubt it's from him. Sounds like the song was written 100 percent from Lenny, the only thing that sounds like him is the guitar solo
you obviously aren’t very familiar with Slash’ writing style or the way he gets around on a guitar at ALL - this riff screams nothing but Slash, and I knew this song was all him by first listen - as it turns out , this song was written by Slash for gnr but Popcorn Adler was too fucked up on Hair-on and Speedballs to play it on drums, so Slash brought it over to Lenny and a masterpiece was born 🤙🏽
And I knew this was a Slash song way before learning that little tid-bit of information.
This is a Slash riff. I am a massive fan of him & before even knowing Slash was a part of this song, I sent it to my mate who is also a fan of Slash & said that this gives major Slash vibes. This is one of his
Let me end this debate. Slash wrote that riff, he said it in his autobiography.
Damnit I don't give a F who wrote it, just glad it's in the world
The man can sing!! Loved this song since it came out in '91
Big Big Groove & Slash 's Solo is ...MASSIVE !! 💯🔥❤️🎸

Facts
GAWD, I love this bass-line! Short, to the point, and it drives the song along perfectly. Wow....
Sly stone RIP off
Lenny always was a badass on bass in the studio. Pocket lines, catchy grooves
@Adam Brier ok 'rip off' might've been a little harsh. 'Borrowed' would be kinder. The bassline and groove are pretty much identical to 'thank you for talking to me africa'. I'm sure LK himself would happily admit to being influenced by Sly Stone on this one!
What is the bassist's name?
Lenny Kravitz... or possibly Henry Hirsch
There's not many good profesional musicians today, but Lenny is one of a few
there's a LOT OF THEM. The main difference, you must find the good bands on youtube or similar. Mainstream bands sucks
That Bass Line is Bad Ass
Bad?why?changE Bass. .change groove
Wow! This song sounds more like a '70s rock song than a '90s rock song. It's all coming back to me now. Back in 1991, '70s nostalgia came in. People were looking back at the '70s during this year. Now, almost 21 years later, we're looking back at the '90s and hoping this decade will catch on. We're still expecting some changes this year.
Definitively we are!
ruclips.net/video/0CFuCYNx-1g/видео.html. Stevie
Lenny has admitted that he was inspired by Superstition (Stevie Wonder) so you're very correct. Also, damn I'm speaking to someone from 10 years ago. Time travel is real.
10 years passed since this comment and kids, at least in my country dress and cut their hair like it's 1990 and new jack swing playing on the radio lol.
For all the people who wondering how Slash and Lenny made a song together:both of them use to be in the same highschool and they were outcasts and got bullied alot, because they're of mixed race. Both of them loved blues and rock music and became friends, they're still today good buddies.
greekfreak1980 Thats a cool story, actually. I didnt know Slash was mixed race either
They were NEVER friends in high school. They saw each other in hallways...they hooked up years later.
And the mix race make it happen...they fame
@@joselara1985 Wrong. They were. I was there.
America in a nutshell. Apart that some outcasts take up guns.
I am amazed, Lenny Kravitz is such a talented musician and an amazing composer. All his albums have a high quality mark, regardless of the style of music in which the album is recorded . The song is a bomb, very emotional. Slash and Lenny are like two brothers , a great duo.. It's been so many years, but it's still a fucking hit ! Why is there some guy playing drums here, where is his unforgettable drummer girl? Well, in the end, a wonderful ending, Slash emotionally kicks the sound speakers . Yes, I just love it when musicians hit and kick their equipment.
Look up Cindy Blackman....still slaying and married to Santana!❤
The epitome of coolness 😎🎸🙏 Lenny and Slash 😎 What a song. Pure classic 😎
Slash just oozes sleaze and coolness. That solo is filth!
the album 'Mama Said' its masterpiece
Lenny's got the Sly and Family Stone horn sound working.
This song is outrageous!!!🎸🥁🎯
Karl Denson on sax
Lenny and Slash.....now that’s a combo🎵🎸
Lenny does a mean rhythm section on this track too. It just oozes groove.
The bass made this song.
Abso-mother fuckin'-lutely!!!!!!!!
The bass line and drummer are securely in that pocket!! The rhythm section is a monster on this cut! 👊🏾
And the brass !
Very possibly played by Lenny, would have to look it up, but he often plays bass and drums on his own tracks in the studio. Although this track always had the feel of a live cut to me the way Slash and Lenny are vibing off of each other. So it maybe Henry Hirsch.
maestro!
Lenny n Slash..what an arrangement..what a song
This riff is pure badassery
THA GROOVE IS REAL !
slash fucking rocks this ......
The fact that Lenny was initially rejected by studios not because they did not see the talent but because his music was not ""black" or "white" enough still blows my mind.
HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY LENNY
I keep seeing Roxie Rooker everytime he says "my mama said". His mother was strikingly beautiful.

One of the coolest most kickarse rock n roll collaborations ever! Still lovin this song all these years later!
Wow!

That horn section though !! 💪🔥
Its really a testament to how great music was in the 90’s in that although I owned multiple Lenny Kravits Albums he was awash in so many other musicians! We just had so much good music to choose from it’s easy to forget how original and talented he was. Today I don’t find one artist that even remotely moves me like the music of the 90’s! Or maybe i’ve just become the old guy! Haha!
