  • This is the Rockwell Collins HF-380. an HF SSB/CW transceiver that was mostly used in government and commercial applications. The US military also used this radio in certain support roles. It is an upgraded/extended version of the Collins KWM-380, the latter sold in radio amateur applications. Uncle Sam paid close to 8 grand for this HF-380 transceiver in 1980, in today's money that equals $25,000 US dollars. Even to today's standards, it is an incredibly good radio. The HF-380 was standard capable of general coverage transmitting anywhere between 1.6 and 30 MHz. It was also equipped with a high stability ovenized reference oscillator, which is an FCC requirement for professional HF radios. The one you see here also has the 1.7kHz narrow SSB filter installed, and comes with the original hard to find direct frequency entry keypad. the HF-380 had the keypad interface build-in as standard, as well as the noise blanker and the RF speech processor boards.

Thank you for posting this video that masterfully demonstrates the HF380, I recently got a radio exactly like this one with the manual, keyboard and microphone SM-280, the equipment had not been working for many years and I have already started to revise it to make it my radio of primary use in the shack. 73 PU3WWV.

Beautiful rig! I don't know how you find such fine specimens, and you certainly are consistent! Nice review on this rare rig. That on/off switch still bugs me though! lol 73, Brett K5WXP

Brett, thanks! Yes, Collins sure made nice ham rigs, and this was the pinnacle! Cheers

It is indeed , but mine is extremely noisy on 20, 40 and 80, no attenuation built in back then

What's the toggle switch below the speaker for??

It is the On-OFF switch - factory original, that's how Collins did it! Granted, a bit unusual.

I got it at the Dayton hamvention some years ago, but the last "Dayton" was cancelled due to the virus. Same might happen to the next one in 2021. Cheers.

It probably had bad tantalum capacitors on the main board, that is the number-one failure mode that this radio might have. I always replace those tantalums with modern ceramic caps, they can be had now in values of 100uF and more. Cheers.
