Great first full solve! Some feedback/pointers:
So, with the AS ABOVE SO BELOW theme, if you'll look back at all the grey shaded squares, you'll notice that AS is in the top two, and SO is the bottom two--literally AS above, SO below. This is one of the joys of doing full crosswords that the mini just can't capture.
ESOS is a common crossword fill, also could be ESAS at times because of Spanish masculine/feminine endings. I will admit BESO seemed slightly tough for a Monday.
So, WNW means West North West. This is another common crossword fill, especially earlier in the week, I think when the constructor just needs some vowels, haha.
ADO and ADOS shows up in puzzles a lot, and CAD is pretty common too. There's a set of words you get accustomed to seeing in crosswords but rarely in the real world.
Finally, don't feel at all bad for using the checker. The ultimate goal of these is to increase your knowledge, improve lateral thinking with wordplay, and above all to have fun. I don't often use the checker, but I do sometimes Google for proper nouns like STEFFI, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays when they really throw some obscure knowledge at you. So yeah, unless you're doing it competitively, all's fair in love and crosswords, though of course it feels great when you manage to figure it out on your own.

The opposite of west-northwest is east-southeast. Also, the grey squares contain AS above and SO below.

I started in 2021, now I do Fridays and Saturdays in 20 minutes. The more you do it, the more you learn all the words that come up all the time. But yes, start with Mondays! I'm not giving up on Sudoku

Also, in case you're thinking about doing these more, which I hope you are, here's a breakdown of each day's difficulty:
Monday: As you saw, pretty easy and straightforward, especially once you've had some practice.
Tuesday: Slightly more difficult than Monday, but not much. Think you could probably handle those too.
Wednesday: Noticeably trickier but still not too bad.
Thursday: Like Wednesday, but usually there's some sort of wordplay theme/gimmick, which can sometimes make them a little fiendish.
Friday: What's called "themeless"; no wordplay or unifying theme, just rather tough clues.
Saturday: Themeless like Friday. Though it's smaller than Sunday, I'd say it's the hardest puzzle of the week just because the clues themselves are so tough.
Sunday: The big one! These are definitely themed. There will usually be a title, and the themed answers will somehow relate to the title. The clues themselves are Wednesday/Thursday level.

Having said that, just did Tuesday’s and it was a little tough. It’s worth noting the legendary puzzle editor Will Shortz has been ill recently and someone else has been editing the puzzles. So some changes are possible.

OMG ALL MY GAMES IN ONE RUclipsR NOW! You got lots of tips in your comments already, and I got one more for you too. NYTs loves a lot of words and you should remember them to make it easier on yourself. STY - AESOP - OREO - OHH - AHH - OOH - AAH (basically anything to get some vowels really). I'm sure there are more that I'm not thinking about too. I hope you do this again!
I did it in 20:20. I completed the puzzle but it said I got something wrong so I used the autochecker. I had YAP instead of YIP like you did and then i never fully understood "Debate topic". So I almost got it without help :P
