Whitebeard holding back during the entire war except for the end, after his beloved son dies, because he knew that if he went all out he would kill his crew is a huge part of what defines him to me.
Whitebeard. My favorite captain in the whole story (even more than Luffy and Roger). I just love all of his aspects as a captain. His power, his confidence, his sense of virtue (for a pirate), and most of all, his will and dream. I'm thankful I found this video, cause it encapsulates an aspect I carry with me till today.

I think there is a correlation between those strong father figures in fiction (whether it be anime, sitcom, etc) speaking to those with broken homes or traumatic childhoods that make you love them. Because characters like whitebeard, piccolo, uncle Phil, Bobby (SN) have always been a personal favorite of mine that make you want to be a better man. I'm now seeing this as I get older and have a family of my own.
