Anyway I liked it because even if I don't agree you made a coherent argument
The only thing I really know about South Park is that it has a surprisingly solid episode on Tourette's. As someone with Tourette's, that makes it extremely hard to watch without setting off my own tics so I still haven't properly watched it, but I can absolutely respect it for that.
Vaguely remember that one. Thought it was a fairly decent 'boy who cried wolf gets what he deserves' thing. Haven't watched it in years though. They can be quite good when they actually do the work to try and understand what they're talking about
What's funny is I actually still watch South Park in the same way as I (and from what I gather you) still watch Doctor Who. I find it very hit and miss, but still tune in in the hopes an episode will really hit for me, and because even if the characters are pretty amorphous I enjoy watching them. But then again, there's lots of places you can drop off on DW too.
My mom has a really weird sense of humor no one understands most of the time, but watching her watch the Scooby Doo episode with the metal musicians and getting about all the jokes was surprising, hilarious and a bit eerie at the same time.

Also, extending off Stuart's recommendation of _The Shivering Truth,_ go and watch _Xavier: Renegade Angel_ while you're at it. It's the same people behind it, focusing more on parodying stuff like _Touched By An Angel_ but with a shitpost-y CGI aesthetic similar to some parts of RUclips *but in the late 2000s,* and to me it's an in-between of _Wonder Showzen_ and _Shivering Truth,_ similar to how _Animaniacs_ was an in-between of _Tiny Toons_ and _Freakazoid._

Excellent stuff, Stu. Totally agree about which of the more down-to-earth episodes beyond Season 2 to look back on fondly, and which mid-season two-parter was the turning point. It articulates better than I could something I've thought about those stories for a while.
I saw and ep a couple of years ago where Terrance and Phillip are (somehow) frail old men and still making their show, which was telegraphed as a meta reference to SP itself.
What a fascinating video Stu. It's interesting thinking about programmes we liked as a teenagers. My only programme that I stick with is Dr Who. However, I dont have that joy about a new episode anymore. I used to write Dr Who fan fiction and even that has become tiresome.
That said, Dr Who and specifically the Big Finish Paul Spragg writing opportunity got me writing again. I had my fan fiction published online, I learned how to develop my craft and its been the launchpad to try and become a middle grade children's writer. Your influences as a teenager are important and while my enthusiasm for Who has changed. I shall always be grateful for this odd little British science fantasy show.

I liked the older era of South Park, maybe bc I was less up on the headlines they were basing stories on. The Golden PSP episode was the harbinger of the end for me.
I definitely resonate with your choice to choose your own ending for the series. I actually did something similar myself recently, when I went back to play through The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Keeping it vague to avoid spoilers, the game has a pretty bittersweet ending, but as a kid I never thought too much about it, just going through to complete it because that's what you did with a game.
But this time, I thought about it a bit more. What if I defeated every boss except the final one, and ended it there? That's a happier ending for almost all the characters, with one being bittersweet in another way. So that time I did it. I got the world to what I saw as it's best possible state and left it there.
It's basically for the same reason that I've chosen to _never_ play the genocide run in Undertale
I unironically think that “You’re getting old/Assburgers” is one of the best and most accurate depictions of depression in tv history.
If you've ever watched the British sitcom Peep Show - it's a point of view sitcom where you hear the main characters' thoughts - one has thoughts where he's constantly attacking himself - that's completely accurate to my experience

The best episodes tend to be the cartman and butters ones imo, Casa Bonita is one of my favourite episodes
Great video. I feel this too. I still watch the show, but it feels like I'm watching from a further distance and it's just passing 20 minutes with some small laughs along the way.
so glad someone talked abt youre getting old. even as a massive south park fan (ive watched every episode at least twice and have made a top 100 episode list lol), youre getting old is still my fav episode. ive never seen a show talk to about itself on a metacontextual level about its own identity this in depth in anything ever. i also think that as an in universe narrative it also works wonders as a metaphor for depression and growing up in general and its very clever how they paralleled that with its own seasonal rot and repetitiveness.
also idk if this is something you would find interesting or not but i think i should mention it since it kinda is the opposite of what u said in the video, but somewhat recently (like these past few years) a lot of younger people (like 13-18) began watching south park and got into it and kept watching BECAUSE of the characters. not for the satire or parallels of real events, but because we find the characters lovable, endearing, and relatable (except cartman (hopefully)). ik thats kinda weird cuz u said u were looking more for character stuff and stopped watching south park cuz it didnt have it, yet now this new generation of south park viewers are watching for this supposed character depth. it may be because we are just younger so our standards are lower since we havent been alive long enough to see what truly great characters are like, or maybe it is just because of more modern fandom culture where someone nowadays is able to base their entire personality off a random background character that has had 2 lines in the whole show, but either way i found that interesting how different age groups view and watch south park in almost completley opposite ways. fantastic video!!!!

But I basically have erased that from my mind and have the same 2 episodes as the end in my mind
I'm so used to hearing "Harry and Meghan" that I genuinely wasn't sure what you meant at first when you said Meghan and Harry.
Seriously though, very well said. South Park can certainly be funny at times but generally it just reminds me of those comedians like Ricky Gervais who are more concerned with being edgy and provocative than actually being entertaining.
South Park is my favourite show and I respect everything in this vid. One thing I totally agree with is the early seasons don't get as much love as they should. It really had this Rugrats-y vibe to it with it how recreated childhood experiences in a very authentic way. Going hunting for the first time, being the new kid, getting beat up by your older sister, being a Jew at Christmas, dealing with a divorce, etc. It was also very clearly informed by real-world childhood feelings and memories, which obviously the creators were close to at the time since they were in their 20's.
But I am of the opinion that the show became substantially better as it evolved, specifically in regards to character-writing. In the early days, there was much less focus on who the characters were as individuals; it was very much about "the boys" more than anything else (the boys go to a state fair, the boys deal with a succubus, the boys get an elephant to make love to a pig, etc). Beginning around Season 5 or so, we started to get a much better understanding of what a Stan episode was compared to a Cartman episode or a Butters episode. This is also where the show's incredible chemistry between the characters really starts to emerge, leading to the many incredible Kyle x Cartman or Cartman x Butters or Stan x Randy episodes over the years. Something like Breast Cancer Show Ever from Season 12 has the kind of amazing character dynamics and comedy that just wasn't to be found in the early days. More character focused episodes like this have become less and less of a focus as the show became more explicitly topical and satirical, which is why I'll always hold up Seasons 5 to 13 as my personal Golden Age for the series.
South Park has been in my life since 1999. I have never met anyone who has got into by recommendation. You either stumble into it organically or your friend sticks it on and you're either hooked or you aren't.
Sidenote, reportedly Moral Orel wasn't intentionally inspired by Davey & Goliath, its creator cited Leave It to Beaver as the main show it was riffing on. Still, it's kinda hard not to think D&G when it comes to Moral Orel.
Also, I'm surprised Stu hasn't talked about Malcolm in the Middle yet, since that show feels almost tailor-made for him (except not being Horror. Debatably)
I do wanna do Malcolm at some point. It's just difficult because it's the show me and my partner first bonded over and my relationship is directly tied to my love of that show and she's a very private person and I would need to word it very carefully and run everything by her first
Honestly, I hadn't been able to put my finger on why the show hasn't felt the same to me since becoming an adult and I think this just put all the pieces in place. Everything you said made complete sense to me. Cheers mate.

Jokes aside, I really appreciate the deeply honest introspection into your relationships with certain shows and mediums. As someone whose life has essentially been formed around Doctor Who and horror movies, I really relate to the feeling of… changing and not prioritising something like you used to.

thinking about it i dont think a shows best episode being the one that makes you stop watching it is that odd, its the best the shows got, everything after will by defalt be worse then it, i guess thats the pesimistic way to look at it
I made the conscious decision to never fully watch South Park and I'm okay with that. I think the closest I've gotten to anything from the franchise is a mild interest in the RPG video games, and still not enough to actually buy and play them.
I always felt that the You're Getting Old 2-parter over the mid-season break, rather than trying to be am ending for the show, was testing the waters, to see how audiences would react to an actual status quo shake-up where the characters get to grow over more personal, serialised stories, and deciding that either the fans, or they themselves, just weren't ready for it yet. So instead they decided to ease into it gently over the next few seasons, to mixed results.
I enjoyed it in the ‘90s because of the absurd humour. It was immature, but immature in the sense of toilet gags and ridiculous concepts like monsters having limbs made of celery and Patrick Duffy, rather than immature in the sense of nasty, low brow mockery of trans people or vegans or such similar. The latter being what I began to notice more and more.
The incessant ‘centrist’ “I’ve learned something today…” endings in particular got very tedious and condescending after a while.
south park is complicated for everyone, even people who've never seen it, even people living centuries from now. south park's impact is the ultimate mixed bag
I think a lot of people agree that You're Getting Old was the spiritual end to the show. I think Trey got sick of it after the 200th episode got censored and then Book of Mormon was a hit. He was being creatively stifled for the first time in one medium while thriving in another.
Season 16 is probably one of the worst seasons, every episode was just something Trey had seen on TV that week, there was even a fucking episode about the home shopping network, clear burnout there. After that they went from making 14 episodes a year to 10 and now they make 6 episodes and 1 special a year. In fact, it feels they've tricked paramount into shitting out an episode whenever they feel like it. And the show is better for that.
Anyway, I'm 25, I find the show super boring now, I really should let it go too.
Actually, Matt and Trey still have a lot of fun working on the show, they were pretty excited for the release of season 23 a few years back and even considered season 22 to be an awesome season. You're Getting Old wasn't about them wanting to end the show, it was more so them talking about their existential crisis of getting older. Plus Matt and Trey have said in a few interviews that if they're not having fun with the show anymore, they would end it on their own terms but the show is still going on and they still have a lot of passion and love for the show. People always say that statement about them losing interest in the show even though most of the time, they don't have actual evidence to prove that statement
What you said about the simpsons is true. You can care about Bart Lisa Homer Marge. Dose anyone have any attachment to Peter Griffin Stan Smith or the SP quartet? This is why the Simpsons will live on.
The reason is the simpsons has a sense of society. Ie Springfield feels like it exists outside of the Simpsons. None of the other shows do. While that apprach works in Father Ted it dont in the others. Since Ted is a real person in a bonkers world. In FG AD and SP anything can happen so there are no stakes so i cant care.
I do like that in 2018 or so they started doing full season long narratives. I think that was a great change
same happened to me. however i am a couple of years older than you so i was gone by the time of those two episodes you highlighted. interesting to see that they did do a smidgen of interesting self reflection at some point.
South Park was the only connection I had with my brother. We were entirely different, and he seemed like the stereotypical older brother, you know, always makes fun of and abuses his little brother, but there was one time this didn’t apply. South Park. We’d watch the DVD’s every day, and when a new episode was on, we’d tape it so we could watch it in the morning. Thusly, South Park is something I have a lot of nostalgia for, because it gave me some happy memories with my brother, where we’d laugh and laugh and laugh. Raisins is my personal favourite episode.
The Shivering Truth is amazing, it's on All 4 in the UK. All 4 is free, by the way. Although it's called Channel 4 now.

I think what makes the celebrity episodes/political episodes worse is that they age faster - see: Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

As for the episodes, I for one think the Movie is the best “episode” of the show because it’s just Kids Go To R Rated Movie: the Plot. Then it unveiled into War on Canada. No binging required, and it’s kinda neat.
That and the Satan-centered episodes.
I’ve also got to ask, how old are you? I’m 30, and so I would have been too young to give a shit about the show in the first place.
Just turned 34. I was given a dvd-r with the first 6 seasons on it when I was about 13
8:45 Tuned out for Season 13 (Pee) & came back thanks to the Pandemic Special. I get choosing you own swan song episodes even for continuing and changing works (Yellowstone 3) as well as the challenge of enjoying something that won't be what you wanted (Ranma 1/2 & romance). Some greats make developing a touchstone end point their goal (Digimon Last Evolution Kizuna).
Watch Mars Express or Onix Equinox. They have nothing to do with thee above. Don't sleep on the good stuff.
DA:LEK could have been the ending, but they may be announcing a third film to round things off at the start if the year. If it comes out in a couple of years, it'll coincide with the in-universe finale to Season 2. I hope this is the case, because while 02 The Begnning was interesting and different, it'd be a weird note to end things on.
I think I had a pretty normal relationship with the show - loved it when I was 13/14, naturaly got tired of it, grew up a bit and realised the show wasn't growing up with me so I never went back.
I’ve felt the same way about a show before, in that I let a meta-narrative drive my decision making process.
That show was the anime Martian Successor Nadesico, which was probably watched by me and five other people. In it, there is another anime that the protagonist watches to help him process his friend’s death and he doesn’t want to watch the final episodes because it gives a sense of finality and wants it to last forever. So yeah, I didn’t watch the last episodes of the show because the show told me not to.
I’ve read the summary, it sounds like Star Trek III, so I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

Funny. I had a similar experience with You're Getting Old. I believe I went at least 5 years without watching again after seeing it. Since then, I've watched the odd episode and/or went on a season binge. Just checked the wiki and there's been around 100 episodes since YGO. Probably seen 25, I'd say. Whereas, I'd seen everything prior, each season growing more and more detached to the show. Like yourself, it was the perfect ending for me at the time (I was 23). But unlike yourself, I sometimes visit the grave for a catch up, before leaving for years at a time.
Took me until season 2017 to get there, it was like watching a super athlete start to suck
What you've said about South Park in this video is sort of my own complicated history with The Simpsons. I just got tired of it and moved on with my life, Honestly I'm not even your age. I'm 19 and I already have the same sort of feelings that you have. It's just for me it's with The Simpsons. And another thing is, Is that I can understand where you coming from, When any show of any kind goes on for way too FUCKING long you will start to get tired of it and not only that, But your tastes and everything else like your life for example will change. Really this video like with the other videos you've made on shows you've enjoyed or got tired of is basically the kind of thing I have with shows like The Simpsons. And that comment you made about how you really didn't have any sort of connection with any of the South Park characters like the 4 main boys of the show is something I understand and I get why you still have a connection to the characters of The Simpsons. It's just for me personally I've just lost of kinds of shits for any of the characters of The Simpsons, Like The Simpsons themselves for me.

Really while I understand you still have a connection towards The Simpsons and not South Park in terms of the characters, For me I can't give a shit anymore about The Simpsons anymore, Both for the show and the for it's characters for me.

I dropped from South Park after about the 11th/12th Season. It just started losing more "boys just being boys" episodes and was predominantly topical or something going on currently. Just not for me. Not what I grew up on.

I never found South Park funny and I am so glad BoJack Horseman ruined sitcoms and animated adult comedies for me that I can't watch them anymore. A misconception about comedy is that the world hasn’t gotten sensitive, it’s just easier nowadays for people to tell you you’re not funny.
Interesting that the exact moment you stopped liking the show is where I think the peak is. The cartman hippie drill episode is one of my favorites. And the "you're getting old" episode is probably the point i stopped being excited for new episodes.
i heart animation, adult, american, comedic animation, but there are some very huge properties i can't stand: cartman and i are of a mind on this one. my point is, i can relate
South Park peaked when they made fun of Game of Thrones and Black Friday. They just can't really top that.
must admit I stopped watching it for the far more prosaic reason of it just became less funny. Trump getting into power really holed it below the waterline and Parker & Stone's sense of humour wasn't able to cope with real world events, there's only so many ways Cartmen can be monstrous.

I realized that watching one of the Paramount specials that I just didn't really care and found it boring, and I feel like that's been my mindset lately with the show, especially in its later seasons.
i was a young adult when sp premiered, i didn't take cartman as an aspirational character, as matt and trey did not expect young viewers to do. i understood the issues they addressed and was free to disagree, but years later i started to notice they had spread climate denialism and casual antisemetism to a whole generation. in the case of the former they drank the libertarian cool aide, in the former, it was a miscalculation in their audience's ability to understand irony. i never thought they had bad intentions. you can see their dawning awareness and attempts to reconcile these issues in the show's run. like changing cartman from the most over the top antisemetism to cupid cartman, who, in a whole other problematic scene is forcibly given psychiatric medication to treat his antisemetism, signifying, it's crazy to think that way, but, you see the problem there, i hope. still, they brought awareness and even nuance and sensitivity to many issues, and once a person would have to pay thousands of dollars and undergo years of indoctrination to find out what they told the whole world about scientology
If you watch any modern South Park I feel like you should watch the 2 post Covid specials. They’re character focused and are heavy on the same themes as your getting old and assburgers.
What’s crazy is just how far behind the climate change thing they’ve been. Climate Change was my numbero uno “we’ve got to do something now!” Back when South Park wasn’t taking it seriously. And now that, 10yrs from now, Miami and the entire Florida coast is going to be under water, 15yrs ago. Well, Climate Change isn’t really a blip on my radar now that Matt and Trey all of a sudden think it’s important. Regardless, South Park still hits home runs on a lot of episodes. They certainly miss a lot, but when they hit it’s usually a grand slam.
even their so-called sorry still misrepresented the issue, saying, even you were wrong about some things, mr gore... and since then there's the 2019 parent's vacc rights ep, the anxiety is an excuse to be lame ep and, ugh, heather swanson

14:21 god I wish that were me. I stopped watching two episodes later and came back for the 2016 election season and that was so bad it ruined the entire show for me.
I have always seen South Park as a kind of vessel for crass and immature story telling. I have enjoyed the fact that the show was never like the Simpsons where you cared about the characters, but instead just wanted to see who Trey and Matt were poking fun at each week. In a way like the Scroty McBoogerballs episode, where the boys just ramdomly try to write the most vulgar, disgusting and provocative story lines without having any other thoughts about character development or any kind of ideeper meaning. That's why, in my opinion, South Park has stayed so relevant over the decades, unlike the Simpsons, because the viewer has lower expectations and is basically just waiting for 20 minutes of entertainment about a current event or talking point, And that simplicity makes the show a quite powerful, as it can be written a few days before airing which gives it a certain anarchical property that other shows don't have. Not saying it is better or worse than other shows, but that it to me is still a relevant and witty show in this day and age for the fact it is so raw, simplistic and over the top.
I do care about sp's cast way more than the Simpson's one. Sp evolved their characters and now they are more 3 dimensional than every animated sitcom, Simpson just backwards everything

There's that episode where they kept doing the aids joke with Jared, and they lamp-shade it with a scene where he's literally beating a dead horse. It did feel like that's what the show became for quite a while. I have kept up with it, but after watching the video through I think I'll spare you the details.
2 days before the day after tomorrow was as climate denying as manbearpig and toward the end cartman was validated in his antisemetic beliefs. whatever else it was that ep was not insignificant

I liked it up until the film they made of it. Started going downhill after that.
That episode is what prompted the creators to abandon the old status quo and become a serialized series started in late S17 and S18. They didn't ignore the lesson per say

what? huh? thin? no way! like old school sesame street, wondershowzen was a showcase for independent creators. chauncy and the gang were a, in my opinion, delightful, framing device, but here again we encounter the prevelent belief amongst creators and viewers of edgy comedy at the time, that ironic racism isn't real racism and may even spread awareness, but this is assuming a sophisticated audience and overlooking the effect of normalization even on people who believe their ideals are fully formed

NAHHHHHH bad opinion. Its a great show. Its still honest. Sure there are terrible episodes, but all in all its a comfort show.
Stopped watching completely when I realized Matt and Trey were too cowardly and liberally biased to make fun of Biden, one of the biggest gaff/meme gold mines in history with endless comedic potential, after committing multiple seasons obsessing over Trump, The Clintons, Bush, etc... Essentially, they devolved into Reddit.
I have to disagree with your assertion that Matt and Trey are liberally biased. They have spent many many episodes mocking the liberal 'woke'. Did you see the series with PC Principal? Or the episodes on trans issues.
If Southpark stands for anything, it's that they believe that you don't have to respect other people or their views/beliefs/gender identity etc. That is certainly not a liberal way of looking at the world.
