MINI included actually a heck of a lot more features than that in the car that are left in the programming, but just dormant. As a technology interested person, you may be interested in "coding". It is a somewhat common practice for BMW and Mini owners to unlock the hidden features in the car. If you wanted to bring your car over to the USA I could do it for you :-) there are tutorials available online; you will need a laptop and a special OBDII cable to do the work.
lcrazy8l My mom's 2007 Odyssey rolls down all the windows if you double click and hold unlock until you let go. Then it stops. Doesn't roll it backup so I'm not too sure why that's a feature
im sure you can adjust that in the settings menu go into lock/unlock menu i had that on my car drove me nuts now i press the unlock button once and it opens all the doors
So that's what that was!? Sometimes when I get in my car the windows go down half way. I never understood why it did that. I thought something was wrong with the car. Apparently I was pressing twice on the unlock button. Thank you for the video! Btw, I have a 2011 bmw coupe. So it's not just minis, but all bmw 2 door family.
the mini has BMW features, has the same features that my 330i had - i have an 04 mini that i just got and had some playing with the windows - though my BMW didn't have comfort entry. the same single press to unlock drivers door and press again to unlock passenger doors ect... and other stuff.
I think I'm probably a bit out the of way 'up north' for you to visit. I'm also not in the slightest bit interesting or entertaining in person so to avoid disappointment I just try to keep myself to myself...I'm a bit of a hermit.
It's possible to re-program the computer, too, to do things like allow one-touch windows when the door is open, one-touch for the sunroof, close the sunroof if the rain sensor detects moisture, etc. I have an R53 (original new MINI) and a few things can be programmed, but the newer ones have quite a few more options. Some are turned on or off by default depending on country.
On my Volvo a single tap opens the drive side, double tap drops the windows 2/3rd (unless its raining) double tapping the lock button pops the boot/trunk and locks the car and then locks the boot/trunk when you close it. I believe on some models you can tap then hold the unlock button and it turns on the seat heaters for when you get in!
Quite a few BMWs with frameless doors share this, and in some cases it's a feature that can be unlocked with coding. If you have folding mirrors, they can also be unlocked to fold with a long locking key press. There's often some odd features in there too, like a double flash hazard light (eg. flash flash, pause, flash flash, pause...) which has been hidden away in BMW group cars for decades.
My 2008 Saturn (Opel) Astra does some of those same window tricks. Very handy on a hot day so you can open the windows as you approach the car to take the temperature down by the time you get to it. Geez, I love that car!
Great...now I want a Mini...thanks Techmoan! My wife says she hates you and all of the gadgets you make her husband drool over. Seriously, though...thanks for all of the videos. I have been watching for years and become excited every time you release a new video. If you ever in New York, I will buy you a beer...or two.
Out of all the cars I drove, mini is my favorite so far, just watch out for. Reliability issues, do your research. I didnt but I luckily ended up buying a mini from a good year.
I have a 2006 Honda Accord LX Special Edition, and it has the feature where if you double-press-and-hold the unlock button on the remote, it'll roll down all the windows until you release it or it's down completely. The same works for sticking the key in the driver's door, however rolling up the windows doesn't work on the remote.
Turns out this applies to the BMW 4 series grand coupe (and I suspect any other BMW with frameless doors. There is even a section in the car help manual for 'double tap' unlock That explains it. You have to have turned on 'comfort entry' in settings though for it to work. Amazing tip and huge thanks for the heads up!! :)
Undocumented features are quite an interesting topic. Some of the things that are planned for a device that for whatever reason did not make the final cut when they went into production.
Press and hold lock/unlock on a Ford fob rolls the windows up/down. It's not as much use for access with doors with full frames, but it's very handy with our maybe summer weather to have a remote open/shut.
That feature is supposed to avoid any discomfort from the momentaneous high air pressure that builds inside the car when you shut the door, some have very sensitive ears. Others makes have this feature too, but the windows only open like an inch or so.
On a couple of models of cars of either me or family members, one tap on the unlock unlocks the driver's door only, whereas double tap unlocks all doors. Mine's a 2008 Elantra, my mom's is a Ford Escape, for examples.
2008-2011 Mini Cooper S - Triple tap the unlock for windows down and cracked sunroof. The dealer tipped us to this one ;) Perfect for hot summer days!!
I was surprised when I found out a few years back that the windows on my 2011 Dodge pickup would roll down automatically if I hit the unlock than hold down the unlock. they stop rolling down as soon as I let up on the unlock button so you can open them a crack half way or all the way. neat feature. I like it. that's nice that yours will auto roll down when you grab the door handle. Thanks for sharing
I remember watching your review of dashcam and i seen that you drive Mini Cooper ... it was joy for my eyes :) Mini is my dream car and i finally managed to buy one for me! It is Mini Cooper 2007 with white roof and red body, what to say amazing car. As you are from UK it is worth pointing out that my first ever car was MG ZR aka Rover 25 :) i owned it for 4 years. And when i sold it, just by watching new owner driving it, seeing it for the last time... it felt like family member was leaving, i had my eyes full of tears. Yes maybe it was too much but it was my first car, and as you probably know MG ZR was out of production i had MK1 model. If there where newer models and i don't count here facelift MK2 i would buy it. Logical continuation was a new Mini which is expensive, especially for here where i live. Finally how it feels to drive MINI, well a lot like MG ZR ... it is small but fast car, with it's sharp steering and that feel which it produces a lot like it was with MG ZR. Cheers!
the holding down lock and unlock works on pretty much every single car nowadays, most people don't know about that function, but something to try on basically every car with a remote lock
I'm a professional mechanic and I didn't know about this. This info will definitely come in handy next time I work on a Mini (my shop has a very small parking lot).
it's called comfort opening. my BMW 1 series had that too but it only did it when parked in tight spots. The coupé doors are a hassle and with a window down it's a whole lot easier
I've got the Mini Clubman (2008 model with the single suicide door) - I'm but aware of such a feature being on my model but I have to say the extended wheel base for extra room and being able to open the suicide door for extra room to get in when in extreme tight spots is also very handy. incase of any significance I'm from Australia, however they left the suicide door on the wrong side.
Double tap is different on bimmers tho. Single tap just unlocks the drivers door, double unlocks all. Sort of a safety feature, you can change it though. As with comfort access, by default only unlocks the drivers door.
Its not just Mini, my BMW does it too. you can also lower the convertible roof it you hold down the button if you have that selected in the cars actions which you set up when you first get the car. Im surprised your dealer didnt show it all to you
The feature of holding the unlock button down to lower the windows is not about getting in and out of your car more easily when it a tight spot. It exists on cars with window frames, like my VW Polo. It's for those places where it is hot. In Australia a summer day could be 35°C. If you have parked your car on the street the inside could be well over 40°C. You use the remote to open the windows as you walk to your car, allowing the inside to cool down a little.
Hmm. I wonder if that's the same in Minis for the Australian market. Are there models of Minis with window frames? I love this feature on my VW Polo (with frame). My parents' Subaru does not and they live in Queensland where it is hotter more often.
My 3 door '07 BMW 118i had this feature too. I don't recall if it was in the manual, though. But i knew about it. Never used it because i dislike tight places to park my car.
i have a friend that works at a dealer here in the US that has some minis and i showed him this, he tried it out it works on the standard ones but not the john cooper works mini or the countryman
This also works on BMW, since it's the same company, but I hate the long press feature, if you hold the unlock button it opens all the windows and sunroof, but you can do it by accident in your pocket. I've parked my car on a busy street and came back to it with everything wide open!
I knew of the "hold button" windows thing (bmw here).. can't wait to try if the double-tap also works even though the doors of the Bmw 3-series have full window frames.. another hidden Bmw and probably Mini feature is if you _don't_ have the keyless entry feature you can start the car without inserting the keyfob if you start the car normally then eject the fob and immediately after restart the car again (without the key inserted).. this makes it possible to leave the engine running, lock the doors, and walk away with the keys.. useful on a cold scandinavian winter morning where you wan't to warm up your engine unattended without fearing some ****** will steal the car (in which case theres no insurance coverage here because you left the keys in the car)
I love the colour combo on your mini. It's a really tasteful retro scheme with touches of chrome in just the right places. The stripes on the bonnet are really HOT. It's a real looker. Love It. You should shoot more videos in that little beast😈
Nice tip. And nice car too. S-version, so it seems. There is a chance, that I've driven your Mini before you did. I'll explain:part of my job is, loading UK-Mini's on the ship, that brings them into your country. Same goes for Mercedes Sprinter and Mercedes trucks. Like your Techmoan video's, btw. Keep up the good work.
I got my new-to-me 2017 Mini yesterday, and did this by accident on the second time off getting into it😆 Thought I'd come and find out if it's an "issue" or a "feature"... and it seems to be the latter🙃. Thank you🙂
all frameless bmws do that ;) since the E46 , if it does not work it only needs to be coded. by the way that window should go right down ; its been badly setup ... you also can stop the window from going back up by clicking the open buton on the key again or touching the window switch.
I have a Chevy Volt that has a "feature," which is - if you press and hold the unlock button, ALL 4 of the windows roll down. I asked Chevy about what the purpose of that might be and they said, "if it's hot you can open all the windows before you get into the car." This isn't something I've ever needed, but if it does no harm, who cares? Well, the problem is, that sometimes - maybe 4 or 5 times I've owned the car - it happens by accident. Let's say I'm on the floor playing with my dogs and I lay on the keys in my pocket and the button is accidentally pressed for a while, all my windows will go down without me knowing. Under the right circumstances, they might be open until the next day when I go outside to get in my car. Once it happened on a day when it was raining, and when I went to get in my car the next day, the interior was wet and full of leaves (it was fall.) So far I haven't been robbed. How about this idea - when I press the unlock button, my car is unlocked?
Ive just watched this at midnight 23 June 2021, went out to try it on my 2019 Mini F57 convertible and wha'do'ya know... it does it on mine too. Quite nice to get some air in quickly too... Thanks for sharing...
Hey Thank you! the double tap unfortunately didn't work for me (US), but I did not know about holding the unlock/lock button to lower the windows. Will definitely be using this now that summer time is right around the corner.
Interesting! I owned a 2010 Cooper S for a few years, and loved it... but if it had this feature, I never discovered it. Traded that in on a Fiesta ST.
Most car companies disable remote features that wind up the windows here in the US - I guess the safety nanny's are a bit more watchful here most modern Fords have remote windows down but you have put them up from inside the car....
interesting .. havent tried any double taps but my b6 passat also opens windows if you hold they key down ... what this is really great for is getting in your car after you have left it to heat up in sun for a long time... takes the "sauna" out of the interior fast
Curious that it was undocumented. Most might think it was intentional, but it could be an oversight. Whomever was in charge of documentation may have missed or forgotten that feature, or the programmer may have moved on to something else, and the added feature may have remained in the design but forgotten in pre-production discussions. Of course the manufacturer would never admit to such an error.
Don't have a mini... still liked the video and commented. Now going to your Patreon page to throw some money your way. You better keep those videos coming!!! :)
All German cars do that. Hold for opening or closing everything. My Astra, Corsa, C-Class do that. Peugeot only does closing if you hold but it's French.
@Techmoan you really switched your Smart Roadster with a Mini? Uargh. Btw. Double-tapping on the standard Roadster-keybutton turns on the coming home lights (if activated), on the Brabus-Roadster it opens the softtop.
Remember the bit at the beginning when I said I'd owned this car for three years....the last video where I showed something in the Smart Roadster was just a few months ago ...this is a two car household.
My 2006 Honda Accord would lower all four windows if you held down the unlock button on the fob. Really made a difference in the summer. Why doesn't my 2014 Toyota Camry have that feature? I don't know - but it's still a great car with a great ride. More importantly at 6:57 PM Pacific Daylight Time, you have 41,724 views on this video. As you should :)
For a good minute there I was looking at the space around the car, and was thinking he must do a terminator, turn to mercury, and slither in to the car through the gaps around the door.
When they built that garage, just what did they think people would use it for? Even a tiny car just barely fits! There must be a lot of people in the UK with banged-up car doors?
oddly enough the hold feature works with my left-hand mini countryman, even with the window frames on the doors. but the double click does not. strange.
I thought for a second you were going to hop into the car through the window opening.
Luis de Santos Exactly my first thought as well..
That's only for the US market
LOL me too
That's Dukes of Hazzard Mode: triple tap the unlock button, and the windows open but the doors stay jammed shut...
TractionEra
but you have to jump and slide across the 'hood' first. ;-)
MINI included actually a heck of a lot more features than that in the car that are left in the programming, but just dormant. As a technology interested person, you may be interested in "coding". Single tap on most US cars only opens the driver's door. Double tap opens all the rest of the doors.
And for the rest of us, further repeated pressing of the button to sate our ADD.
Tim Harig same on some uk cars
on an 2010ish Honda Accord a triple click of unlock will roll down all the windows and the same in reverse triple clicking lock.
lcrazy8l My mom's 2007 Odyssey rolls down all the windows if you double click and hold unlock until you let go. Then it stops. Doesn't roll it backup so I'm not too sure why that's a feature
im sure you can adjust that in the settings menu go into lock/unlock menu i had that on my car drove me nuts now i press the unlock button once and it opens all the doors
Here in New Zealand we have our own keyless-entry technology -- it's called a brick. :-)
Or a hammer.
Hammers are too high-class for New Zealanders though.
can we be penpals and send me a bob semple
So that's what that was!? Sometimes when I get in my car the windows go down half way. I never understood why it did that. I thought something was wrong with the car. Apparently I was pressing twice on the unlock button. Thank you for the video! Btw, I have a 2011 bmw coupe. So it's not just minis, but all bmw 2 door family.
Alex Petrescu can confirm on my 2009 BMW 650i with comfort entry.
the mini has BMW features, has the same features that my 330i had - i have an 04 mini that i just got and had some playing with the windows - though my BMW didn't have comfort entry. the same single press to unlock drivers door and press again to unlock passenger doors ect... and other stuff.
Wish we could have met you while we were in the UK last month!
I think I'm probably a bit out the of way 'up north' for you to visit. I'm also not in the slightest bit interesting or entertaining in person so to avoid disappointment I just try to keep myself to myself...I'm a bit of a hermit.
The width of some modern garages is f@cking ridiculous!

The other hidden feature is the power steering breaking in an excitingly expensive way just after the warranty ends.
LOL
Then a few year on there's the stretching cam chain.
That was on the original 02 to 06...buy a newer one... The most likely car to pass an mot
@@Graham_Langley that was fleeting and a long time ago. Buy f series .... Much better car
Thanks old chap.
Me too if you ever come to Ilmajoki, Finland 😁
I'll have a Minttu
Out of all the cars I drove, mini is my favorite so far, just watch out for. Reliability issues, do your research. I didnt but I luckily ended up buying a mini from a good year.

Sharing with a coworker who has a Mini. Keep the great content flowing!
window goes up...window goes down...
Thanks for the heads-up. This also works on my 2016 BMW F34 (non keyless) after activating comfort entry in the menu. Awesome! :-)
2008-2011 Mini Cooper S - Triple tap the unlock for windows down and cracked sunroof. The dealer tipped us to this one ;) Perfect for hot summer days!!

An unusual video for you but still great.
My 1988 bmw has the comfort entry! It's a bmw thing. I'll have to try the double tap on it too!
afaik Mini was acquired by BMW, so it's likely it will work.
ΛVINIDE BMW kept the mini brand after it sold off Rover in 2001
ChrisB Mini is owned by BMW
*cough* 1983 Mercedes got that.
'07 Mazda 5 also has this.
My mustang has a comfort entry. Here in Texas it helps evacuate the 160F+ air in the car quickly. That and remote start.
PhoenixNFA does it have steer horns on the front grill
Reminds me of when I discovered the hidden startup sounds on the gamecube (hold z)
the holding down lock and unlock works on pretty much every single car nowadays, most people don't know about that function, but something to try on basically every car with a remote lock
That's strange, all I had to do was tap the window once on my new car with a hammer, and it permanently was easier to get into.
For your passenger's sake you should still double tap. He'll appreciate having a shattered window too :)
My '72' Mini has a feature, where when it rains It washes your shoes...
I had a similar feature in my MG Midget - when it rained you'd get a nice refreshing shower.
That's the 3rd meaning for double tap then. My army days taught me the first 2. :)
I was just saying that most cars have window frames. It would not make it easier to get into the car in a tight spot if the windows were down.
On the Minis it only works on the frameless window models.
Never used it because i dislike tight places to park my car.
i have a friend that works at a dealer here in the US that has some minis and i showed him this, he tried it out it works on the standard ones but not the john cooper works mini or the countryman
love your videos techmoan.... coincidentally....you mini has the same colors as our national flag here in Trinidad and Tobago!
This also works on BMW, since it's the same company, but I hate the long press feature, if you hold the unlock button it opens all the windows and sunroof, but you can do it by accident in your pocket. I've parked my car on a busy street and came back to it with everything wide open!
I love the Knight Rider light on top of the central console.
That is a cool bit of tech they put in there. That would have been a great feature on my 1977 Chevy Monty Carlo lol.
Clearly you haven't discovered the joy of just bringing two keys with you xD
Fekillix :-)
Holding down the Un/Lock key also works on Ford cars from around 2000 onward.... try it!
Any 2 door BMW or Mini has the comfort entry. On the 4 door cars, double tap unlocks all the doors instead of just the drivers door.
Good Lord.... now I FINALLY know why BMW lowers the windows sometimes.
I was wondering about that behaviour for years. Thank you very much
I have a Chevy Volt that has a "feature," which is - if you press and hold the unlock button, ALL 4 of the windows roll down. I asked Chevy about what the purpose of that might be and they said, "if it's hot you can open all the windows before you get into the car." Techmoan,
I still say you could read a Phone Book and make it interesting.
Instructions unclear... Mini on fire... Now I don't have a house ;(
That window trick works on most if not all cars from the last decade in the USA. It does it on my 2010 Dodge Journey.
My 1994 Jap Import Subaru had a similar feature.
I don't even have a license and I watched the full thing
reviewing car tech I see
SP OI more like stumbling onto a hidden feature that is not mentioned in the owners manual.
digitalrailroader close enough
fiat have a similar feature for opening the windows using the remote. just keep the unlock button pressed. To close them again, use the lock button.
Hmmm. No Puppets? I'm sure you can just shove him in through the window, you know he would complain about that too.
Interesting! I owned a 2010 Cooper S for a few years, and loved it... but if it had this feature, I never discovered it. Traded that in on a Fiesta ST.
I tried it and it works thanks you
I have a 4 door now... but I wish I'd known this when I had a 2 door.
Stop reminding me how much I'd like a 2 door Mini Cooper. It's too bad buying a Mini is like lighting money on fire.
Mine does't do that, but it has pillars in the doors (2016 Clubman)
He makes quick trick videos too?
Techmoan is the best at everything!
Thank you, this changes my life.
Don't have a mini... still liked the video and commented. Now going to your Patreon page to throw some money your way. You better keep those videos coming!!! :)
The "holding down the button" thing is pretty common on European-designed cars, I think. My old Focus did that, but my new Falcon doesn't.
All German cars do that. Hold for opening or closing everything. My Astra, Corsa, C-Class do that. Peugeot only does closing if you hold but it's French.
Yep...the hold is in the manual,
Ah, the double tap is undocumented (as per video description). I really should read more :D
it works on my 2014 Mini Cooper S F56 from the States and thanks never knew about this
Helpful video, how do you manage to keep the mirrors folded with the car unlocked and do they open after you start it?
@Techmoan you really switched your Smart Roadster with a Mini? Uargh. Btw. Double-tapping on the standard Roadster-keybutton turns on the coming home lights (if activated), on the Brabus-Roadster it opens the softtop.
Remember the bit at the beginning when I said I'd owned this car for three years....the last video where I showed something in the Smart Roadster was just a few months ago ...this is a two car household.
If that means the Roadster is still there I won't unsubscribe :P Nah kidding, I just wondered. :) Though thanks for your reply, good to know! :)
Same feature on Fords from 2000 onwards except the double tap window open / close wonder if it can be programed.
my bro in law has a 4er gran coupe and it also has this feature! he was pretty amazed when I showed him it!
Neat. I’ll have to try that on my 2012 coupe!
First rule of zombieland... Double tap
How freaking awesome is THAT?! Thank you.
Gosh this car is absolutely comfy.
very posh
David owns a mini because OF COURSE HE DOES.
For a good minute there I was looking at the space around the car, and was thinking he must do a terminator, turn to mercury, and slither in to the car through the gaps around the door.
That’s what this is 😂😂😂 I thought my electronics are bad haha! Thank you
I've done this a couple of times by mistake and I was like "what the fuck is up with my windows"? Cheers for that!
Forgot you had an F56 Mini, my gf also has a Cooper S one. Have you had any coding done it to?
The reason the window goes down is to make the door easier to close from the inside because of wind resistance
As a past MINI Cooper S owner, I can only hope you dont come to regret your purchase as much as I did.
acousticpsychosis y tho?
So many MINIs had SO many mechanical problems, they cost a small fortune to keep running. Hopefully they fixed them by now, but if not...ouch.
Still one of the least reliable brands out there, at least it isn't Fiat.
When they built that garage, just what did they think people would use it for? Even a tiny car just barely fits! There must be a lot of people in the UK with banged-up car doors?
oddly enough the hold feature works with my left-hand mini countryman, even with the window frames on the doors. but the double click does not. strange.
@Techmoan what's the rubber / foam mat you've got on the wall? I need to get one just like it!
Great. We're ordering a Clubman tomorrow. Let's see if this helps with that.
I suspect this only works on the F56 and F57 because the F54 and F55 have door frames. Nice tip though
