  • "Buffalo Soldier" is a reggae song written by Bob Marley and Noel G. "King Sport" Williams from Marley's final recording sessions in 1980. It did not appear on record until the 1983 posthumous release of Confrontation, when it became one of Marley's best-known songs. The title and lyrics refer to the black U.S. cavalry regiments, known as "Buffalo Soldiers", that fought in the Indian Wars after 1866. Marley likened their fight to a fight for survival, and recasts it as a symbol of black resistance.
The song's bridge, with the lyrics woy! yoy! yoy!, is similar to the chorus of the Banana Splits' "The Tra-La-La Song", the 1968 theme from their TV show, written by N. B. Winkless Jr. There has never been any litigation connected to the similarity.
The song has been covered by many artists, including Cultura Profética (on their album Tribute to the Legend: Bob Marley), Vanilla Ice (on his 2008 album Vanilla Ice Is Back! and Randy Marsh.

@@paulcrawley442 You do realize the ignorance in your comment. Those Africans that this song references were stripped of their culture, histories, languages, and spiritual traditions.
They are primarily African Americans and many Caribbean's.
Due to the slave holocaust and the atrocities involved, one could not "sensibly" expect these people fully know of their African histories because it was beaten out of them.
Your comment was extremely offensive and disrespectful to American descendants of enslaved Africans.

Who were the Buffalo Soldiers: In 1866, a year after emancipation, an all-black calvary consisting of two infantry regiments were created after congress passed the Army Organization Act. The two regiments were the 9th and 10th Calvary regiments called the Buffalo Soldiers by the Native Americans that fought them. The Native Americans labeled them Buffalo Soldiers for the texture of their hair and the bravery they demonstrated during battle.

" Private Randall suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder and 11 lance wounds but recovered. The Cheyenne quickly spread word of this new type of soldier, "who had fought like a cornered buffalo; who like a buffalo had suffered wound after wound, yet had not died; and who like a buffalo had a thick and shaggy mane of hair."
Taken from the wikipedia page on the buffalo soldiers.
