Why stage anything? Weather will always affect gardening. OWN IT! "Camera ready"? There should always be a plan B and maybe C. One that doesn't require you to stress (and spend money). Reschedule. This is not meant to be mean. I'm glad that see that you have issues JUST LIKE the rest of us. Everything in gardening is a risk. This is an opportunity to educate us and jump on it! You are doing great!

I agree with you, Brian. Social media can be a huge time-suck/brain-drain, especially for ADHD peeps. I ignore most of it, too. Regarding the beetles and pill bugs, have you tried dusting diatomaceous earth around the base of your strawberries and cucumbers? We started using it around ours, as well as other seedlings, and it made an immediate difference. We use Sluggo for the snalils and slugs. And showing the dead gopher is fine with me and the hubby. Keep up the good work and have a great day! ☺️

You could let the cilantro flower and seed and collect the coriander seeds. And save some to sow next year. That could be part of the story of gardening. I do that with parsley all the time and had a ton of parsley this year. The pollinators love the tiny flowers and I'm pretty sure cilantro is much the same? I love your sweet animals and all the info you do selflessly offer. Thank you!!!!

Brian, I understand getting everything camera-ready as much as possible. Here are a few suggestions so it's not so overwhelming. 1) Make a list of what you need completed 2) Recruit your small group/life group to do the grunt work and specific things you need done that you don't have to do (like mulch) 3) Frees you up to do what only you can do 4) Have it be a work day or two and feed them lunch or dinner. Group projects make it doable and they would be happy to help. Many hands make a job easier.

I gave up FB in 2018 and it was the best thing I ever did. I couldn’t handle all of the thoughts and opinions from everyone- all the time. It was such a burden lifted. I was born in 1970 and grew up in the 80s before phones and technology changed how people live and interact with each other. I think better of people now because I don’t know their every thought. Plus, it allowed me to unplug and just ENJOY life’s precious moments so much more.

The school of traditional skills doesn't need to know how to garden in a perfect year. We really do need to know info on how to grow during a cold, or hot, or dry or any other crazy kind of year. That is the only time you really do learn anything. It feels better when you see someone else learning that way too. Please keep showing us truth. That is why we appreciate you so much!

In terms of social media, I still have the accounts active but I am not actively on it since 2020, when I got into gardening and learning/classes/theology and it's been glorious!! My phone is never close by and honestly, do miss home phones you'd to run to answer.

Thank you for making me smile today Brian. I needed that. I personally think because of all the social media platforms, people don’t sit and visit, or go outside and be productive, or sit outside and just watch the sunset, because they’re on their phones, I just feel like they’re missing “real” life, “real” interactions with their own family, their neighbors, their world. I think you made a good choice. I even have to limit my time on RUclips, watching other peoples lives and be deliberate to spend time doing things that affect my life and the lives of my family and friends. ❤️

I used to be a RUclipsr and Instagram/TikTok content creator for years, so I was ALWAYS on social media and on my phone. In 2022, I felt a call from God to release the social media from my life, and it was such a relief! I was afraid to do it at first, because I thought I wouldn't have a life without it, but it was so freeing. Since then, I've taken on gardening and baking (way more productive hobbies). Now, that I don't use Instagram or Tiktok, I'm finding myself mainly watching RUclips videos which are far more educational. I'm so glad I got off of social media. (P. S. - I usually cringe at seeing dead animals, and I was n't expecting you to show the dead gopher, BUT it actually wasn't too bad seeing the gopher. It wasn't up close nor was it gory.)

I applaud your awareness of social media and making changes that fit with your intentions. Regarding the gophers, thanks for showing a bit of gopher so we understand how that type of trap works. And I think you’ll find HUGE success with burying the dead gopher in the hole. About 20 years ago, we felt like we were playing whack a mole with one gopher after another until we finally buried it in the tunnel rather than putting it in the trash. This was my mom’s suggestion. It totally ended the goober issue at that house. We used that technique at our next home and it worked again.

Concerning your social media vacation. Around 2005 a class I was taking required that we go off the media for a week. At that time it meant tv, radio, newspaper and so on. Very quickly it became apparent to me that much of my usage was mindless time expenditure. I suspect that Noah's teacher was trying to get that across to the students. I wonder how many students actually completed the assignment and how many claimed to go off their social media.

I am just now hardening off tomatoes and peppers which I won’t plant out until the first week of June, depending on night temps. My plants were really really slow this year. I only belong to FB because of some private groups like NLG, which, after seeing someone else having slow plant starts helped me to make some changes that helped. I may only get on FB once every couple weeks to scan but I don’t spend much time. And, no social media on my phone. I’m 75. I was 8 when my family got our first black and white tv with 3 channels. Lol. Great show Brian, Thanks for your time.

actually, the class should be about reality as well. our weather just cooled this week but as our climate destabilizes, we are going to see more of this so everyone needs to plan for it. one of the problems, especially for new gardeners, is expectations. so many people start gardening for a season or two then get discouraged because their expectations were not met. like all things, it takes time to get experience and get in the flow. as for social media, i got rid of them all shortly after i tried them when they began. i only have youtube and that is because it is about learning for me. love the animals 😍

It truly is a weight lifted off ones shoulders when getting off of social media. I left Facebook and Instagram July 2023. It has been wonderfully liberating! I don't plan on ever returning to either one. I like my freedom too much! Like you, I continue to have RUclips because I like watching movies. Three years ago we discontinued satellite for television. Now we watch all movies via RUclips, Amazon, Hallmark or DVDs. It's wonderful to have entertainment at your fingertips. But, freedom from bondage to social media is priceless!
I enjoy your channels. Hang in there, and thank you for all the work it takes to make them possible.

Until you get rid of the snails and other things eating your strawberries, here's a suggestion, I bag my strawberries with those bags for seed starting. They're like a cloth bag. I put a clip on the top of the stem to keep the critters out. So far it has worked.
That is a mole tunneling under the surface of the soil. We have them here in Florida.
I also don't do social media, I have enough problems of my own, I don't need to be reading about everyone else and their problems. I do have my y tube videos that I watch. I can watch or not watch certain videos. Thanks for sharing your farm animals with us. They are very entertaining.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

Interesting facts about avocados. Avocados DO NOT RIPEN on the tree. They only reach maturation once they are cut off from the tree !
Best options for small immature trees - pick off all the flowers - so they concentrate on further growth - and later fruiting.

I think you did the right thing getting off social media. There are positive aspects to it, but I think it is more bad than good. I was on FB for about a month 8 or 9 years ago. Saw it as a huge waste of time, (for me), and deleted it. I will admit I watch too much YT though.
I feel your class will be a big success. Your knowledge and presentation style is awesome. (my garden is proof of that) And you can highlight the reality of things outside of your control, i.e. weather. You can turn the lack of 'perfection' into a positive. We all have to deal with something we didn't plan on.

First... your garden is absolutely beautiful! Those flowers are stunning (nasturtium?)! Have you tried zoning your spaces by days of the week? It doesn't take care of the everyday stuff like watering and pest control... but it gives you a focus area for the day. I give myself Saturdays off to rest. But I have Seedling Sundays (which is all my potted and shed areas), Raised bed Mondays, Perimeter Tuesday, Wild Space Wednesdays, Orchard Thursday, Food forest Fridays. It's really helped me with the perfectionist paralysis. I do it inside for household cleaning too.

Re: gophers. We had 3 acres and a big barn and a horse and chickens and dogs. They tore down a long line if really old trees across the street and when they did we were suddenly over run with big rats. We tried everything;d-con, sticky traps, big snap traps, everything. Walked into the barn one night and saw 16 just sitting in the rafters watching us. If we saw 16, there were probably 60 more hiding. And then a little yellow female cat came to live with us. She could come in the house whenever she wanted but she preferred outside. She walked into that barn and started killing rats. In less than a month she had killed every rat and mouse and then she started on the gophers out in the pasture. Once she took care of those, she went next door into the acres of almond orchard and killed their gophers. She was a killing machine and she didn’t cost us a dime. Moral of this story. Get some cats. Rescue a female and spay her-get a short haired cat. Also that cat woukd go out and sleep with our chickens. She never bothered them. Now I can’t swear she wouldn’t catch and eat a baby chick, but if they had a good mom, she would never have faced off with an angry hen.

Here in the SF Bay Area, we have had a mostly grey May heading into June gloom and 45-49* nights and barely 70* after three days of upper 70’s. Stalled most of the veggies but the first two tiny zucchini needed hand pollinating today. It is an area that traps heat better than the others areas. All are in containers just bc of the orientation of the house has sun in the front rather than the backyard. All we can do is improvise around the vagaries of the weather…

Quit social media four years ago....only miss the odd contact from old acquaintances.
Far outweighed by the negativity and time wasting!
    Same for mainstream media.
Much healthier and no intention of going back!

Thank you for showing how the gopher contraption works. I have them too and was wondering, as others have, how it works.
I did try something new this year on the advice of my sister and it’s WORKED! She suggested spreading moth balls in the area. They last a long time and no gophers since!!

Aww your animals love you a lot! Im glad you show the reality of owning a garden/homestead, especially when people are depending on it. Its hardwork keeping things in order/functional and battling WW3 with nature is a lot. Addiction to social media is real, as im writing this Im thinking of my own list of tasks that havent been completed either, time does fly by 😅 Good for you to see it and come up with a plan to help enjoy life better. Wishing u and your family well!

I've been struggling this year with all of my plants. Thankfully my tomatoes are ok, they are still in cups, but I've direct sowed a lot of zucchinis and cucumbers and nothing has come up. I'm thinking is because of all the cold weather we've had here in SoCal. I've also been struggling with slugs because of the cold wet weather. I put out a bunch of marigolds that I grew from seed out in the garden and the slugs have eaten everything. It's been frustrating to that point of my giving up.
As far as social media goes, yes, it's a time suck. I've been making an effort to do other things I like. Like reading, drawing, playing my bass and spending time with my kids. Social media has kind of ruined everything.

And this is why I’ve never done fb, tw, insta, etc. They are designed to keep you on the site longer, it’s how they make money. And to see a movie quote, the only way to win, is not to play. As to the garden, I get making it camera ready, but don’t forget weather issues and showing that is a learning opportunity for students. Your friend in tx w the full bloom garden can’t teach this by example that you will be able to do. One of the best parenting pieces of advice was, don’t take their learning opportunity away from them. This is a teachable moment you have right now, take advantage of it. The best learning opportunities come from challenges. Gift that to your students. You’re gonna be great because you’re sharing real world advice! And what’s better than that?!
Daisy is getting sassy! So cute!

Using FB is ok for me because I mainly use it to utilize prayer groups etc and then for free time I like the free games. RUclips is my tv - I use it all the time for learning things like your podcasts and others and religious ed and things like that - I don't watch TV - I learned that watching those SHORTS on FB or RUclips suck time out of you and it is hard to set it aside so I gave it up - What I learned to do is to SPLIT SCREEN my laptop and I watch a gardening episode or something simultaneously while I play a mindless game on fb. I have always been able to listen more intently if I am doodling or occupying my self with some mundane task so it works for me. I had to give up the other social media places because they are nothing but hate - rumor - more hate - more anx etc.. nothing positive. We are growers - we like positive things!

We can’t control the weather unfortunately. Where I live in Montana we are always behind everyone. Gaging when to start seedlings indoors isn’t easy. And I have a very small space which quickly looks like a jungle 😂. I went ahead and planted my tomatoes knowing there are cold nights ahead. They get covered each night with buckets and tubs. But they are looking good. My pepper plants are still indoor and putting on blooms. I save as many seeds as I can having learned that my plants will adapt to these climates. Of course tomatoes will never survive freezing temperatures but over the years they do become more resilient.
Do I still buy some plants from nurseries? Yes of course because anyone who loves plants can’t resist! So no garden is perfect. I don’t battle gofers but have ground squirrels which are terrible! To much rocky ground to set those kind of traps. I get my grandson to come and shoot them.

But don't forget the rest of your friends out there in the world. OK? Some of us are on your side. And go to church. Also, cattle, horses, goats, sheep....the females do have a (approximately) a monthly cycle. (I urge you to look it up for yourself) And you are not alone with the weather. Everyone in our worldwide small farm community are having problems with the artificial weather. (Do ask this question and let me know?) And don't be so hard on yourself!!! You are a sensitive and creative human being. Sometimes you just need to take a break and par down your expectations? Daisy looks so little to be bred ............don't run yourself ragged....I'm still doing prep work in Minnesota , only planted flower seeds in pots and set out calla lily bulbs last week and bought plants for pollinator garden today - plan to sow Mexican sunflowers (for the Monarchs in the fall) this week - eww, that was a huge snail - that mesh on the retaining wall was very interesting , they didn't have that when we built our walls 20 years ago ( as far as I know )- it is very liberating to not be tied to social media - yes you definitely need a storage area next to where you feed the lambs and Daisy - supposedly if the overhang of a porch or house is painted a shade of blue wasps won't nest in the cross members probably doesn't work for birds

"May Grey" is definitely having an impact on gardening. My garlic looks like your's. I hit the strawberries with some Sluggo Plus as well. Yes, looks like you have moles, the property I am on has moles and gophers. We trap the gophers and put them out for the hawks to eat, they love em. And yes, by all means, take a break from social media, it can give your mind a much needed rest. Thanks for the update and our "animal loving fix" of Daisy, Bella, Otis and Ollie.🥰 Hope all goes well with getting ready for the class.

moles normally leave a big mound, bigger than those gopher holes. We got the mole chaser windmill from Lehman's and it works AWESOME. Sandy soils it may not work all that great but moles tend to like hard clay soil.
