    A step by step how-to guide on replacing a worn VVT intake pulley on your 4AGE 20 valve silvertop engine.
    The process is the same for the 4AGE blacktop, just the part number for the pulley is different.
    Check out the channel belonging to the guy behind the camera.

    Hey Terra, good job on the video. Only thing I wanted to add is that when ignored the VVT pulleys can stop working completely and go silent again. The best way to test this is simply a test drive with and without the VVT solenoid plugged in. Anyway funny story for you- me and a guy I know where looking at my friends 20V engine because it was ticking loudly. He noticed one bucket has a good 0.5mm gap from the cam and when taken apart we found that the shim was sitting on top of the retainer instead of on the valve! one of the collets had a few dents but was still useable.

    The "thing" that get worn on the pulley is the "bushing". The rubber that is physically connected to the camshaft itself...
    You will have to completely open up the whole VVT-pulley in order to fix this (pain to do properly since it utilizes springs in order to "not pull over") by adjusting the bushing 180 degrees(flipping it to the other side). I have done this procedure several times, mainly on newer VVT-i's. But also on my BT 20V as well.
    Nothing i'd recommend to the average "garage-Joe" but in comparison to what these baby's cost it could be worth a try.

    "calibrated forearms" hahahaha nice one :)
    I always try and push a little bit more tension on the tensioner pulley myself when in this situation, the belts really love to flap around at high RPM and it prevents the belt kicking itself off a pulley.
    Nice video mate.

    Hello,
    Great Video! But can you tell how you unbolted the VVT pulley bolt? Normally it's pretty difficult to remove and i think normally one should remove the cam cover, use a wrench to hold the cam and then unbolt it.
    I more like it doing your way but i'm not sure if it's save to just unbolt it without removing the cam cover.
    Thanks!

    • @TERRAOperativeOriginal

      I retarded the exhaust cam just a couple of degrees to broaden the torque curve (at the expense of lowering peak torque a bit)
      You can freely play with adjusting it a few degrees in either direction to experiment and the ECU won't freak out.

    • @BaronRosenhein
      @BaronRosenhein 10 лет назад

      Not considering the power and efficiency loss caused by the worn pulley you get an erratic working on the cam-to-tappets (or whatever your particular cam lobes push on to operate the valves). Basically accelerated wear can happen which is never good. And if you don't get tired of that noise well then its all cool.

    • @deanbassist01
      @deanbassist01 10 лет назад

      So you are saying there is an effect on performance? It wont engage as quickly or on time? Is there damage being done to other things?

    • @BaronRosenhein
      @BaronRosenhein 10 лет назад

      Well a lot of it really depends on your driving style.
      VVT's were introduced to combat stringent emission regulation when consumers craved for more power and better gas mileage. In essence you get a well tuned low RPM torque without losing in hight RPM just by adjusting timing (VVT). If you operate the engine at low RPM and never get to a point where VVT kicks in, you can happily live without it.
      Other thing that can happen is oil leak. Due to construction of VVT pulleys there is a viton oil seal between two plates that slide relater to each other to achieve difference in timing angle. At certain point this seal will crack and start to leak oil. You will probably have 100k+ miles clock and start replacing cam seals which won't really help.

    That drill does not work the same as a impact gun, if you use a torque bar with it it won't be torqued to spec. and you may break the stud or bolt. i have heard of people destroying blocks because they tried to torque the head down like that. Dont be fooled by the mechanics that use them with a torque bar.

    • @TERRAOperativeOriginal
      @TERRAOperativeOriginal  9 лет назад +4

      The 'drill' I use on the wheel studs is a true electric impact wrench. I know, it's mine and I bought it. I also have the DeWalt battery drill so I know the difference....
      Using an impact wrench on a cylinder head is never advised and is a silly idea, that's what torque wrenches are for.
      I never said to use the impact wrench for the head bolts but when used with a torque bar on wheel studs, it's perfectly acceptable practice.
