- PAINTING VIDEO DESCRIPTION - Looking for an easy winter painting idea? Want to do a fun Christmas DIY project? Let me be your acrylic art instructor as I teach you easy step-by-step instructions throughout this fun beginner art video as you learn how to paint a candle and poinsettia-a romantic and peaceful still life painting “CANDLE LIT POINSETTIA” with acrylic paint. Like clockwork, as soon as Thanksgiving ends, the Christmas spirit begins. And what better way to get into the mood than by listening to some Christmas music. Heading out shopping for the Black Friday deals and all you hear is Christmas music playing on the radio and in department stores. I have five favorite Christmas songs, each for their own reasons. Blue Christmas because my parents listened to Elvis when I was growing up and it very nostalgic, Feliz Navidad because I can’t help but to want to get up and dance around every time I hear it, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree because it reminds me of one of my favorite Christmas movies Home Alone, a bunch of songs by the Trans/Siberian Orchestra because they just get your blood pumping like you just had a shot of expresso, and Silent Night because it’s the one that reminds me the most of just relaxing on Christmas Day. After all the parties and get-togethers, shopping and gift wrapping, baking and cooking, there is nothing like the calming and peaceful feeling of just sitting and relaxing in your sweatpants by a fire, watching a Christmas movie, eating leftovers and sipping on hot cocoa. So, come join me and paint this serene scene of a poinsettia flower lit by the light of a candle and imagine yourself chilling out on the couch and reminiscing about life and the year that has passed. The painting process is so simple to follow. You’ll first learn how to paint a background using just black and then you’ll add glowing out-of-focus bokeh dots in order to create a relaxing yet festive mood. Then, after learning how to draw an outline for your candle and plant, you’ll apply a simple base coat to work off of. You’ll learn how to paint an illuminated candle by layering colors to create form, dimension and depth, and then you’ll learn how to paint a flame by using bright and bold colors giving it a 3-D like appearance so real you’ll be able to feel the heat coming off the canvas. The poinsettia will come to life after you learn how to add highlights and shadows on the leaves and petals being lit up by the light of the flame. You could paint any floral arrangement centerpiece that you want, an iris, rose, sunflower, mums, tulips, carnation, any flower will look beautiful under the candlelight. Creativity is always encouraged, just have fun with it! This painting is sure to impress the viewer and compliment the décor of any room. Using only 3 brushes and 5 colors, you’ll paint like a professional! Have a date night, paint party, paint and sip event, or virtual paint night. Paint with gouache, oil paint, or watercolor, any medium will work! Paint just for fun or for art therapy. It's an easy art project. Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 3/4 inch flat bristle, 1/4 inch flat bristle, #6 round synthetic
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, fire red, green oxide and deep yellow
Other: Chalk, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint background with black
2. Chalk - Draw outline for candle and poinsettia
3. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat for candle and bokeh dots with red and yellow
4. #6 round brush - Paint base coat for leaves with green and red
5. 1/4 inch bristle brush - Finish dots with red, yellow and white
6. 1/4 inch bristle brush - Finish wax part of the candle with red, white, yellow and peach (made #5)
7. #6 round and 1/4 inch bristle brushes - Paint flame on candle and wick with red, yellow, white and black
8. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint reflection of candle with red, green, peach and light yellow (made in step #5)
9. #6 round brush and 3/4 inch bristle brush- Finish plant with green, yellow, white, red, black and peach
10. #6 round brush - Sign with red

Another gorgeous painting Michelle! Also the other element that my mom always made a part of our Christmas memories. Cardinals and poinsettias all over the tree and huge pots of poinsettias all over the house and down the beautiful stairway of our home. This will definitely be another work that I do and share with my siblings. In fact, every year since our mom passed, on Christmas eve where we now gather at my home, I always have a beautiful red candle burning wrapped with an artificial poinsettia in memory of her. Of course you had to make me look up where the poinsettia name came from, all I knew was they originated in Mexico. “The plant is named for the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, who introduced America to the poinsettia in 1828, after discovering it in the wilderness in southern Mexico.” Now I learned something too! 😂 And I’m painting it tonite! Some of it, need to be in bed by 8:30😂And I’m drawing it!! Yay!
