Many thanks to Pierre for sharing his family heirloom with us! Now I have so many questions about his great-great-grandmother Pauline and French culture in the 1880's. Was she a young person when she created this scrapbook? If she was already a mother, then she must have had a lot of domestic helpers in order to spend so much time creating this. Was she a traveller? The page with the envelopes showed a postal cancellation mark from what might have been London?? Was she bilingual? Everything's written in English. Did she have friends or family in England? What about the money on the opposite page, from Japan, United States, Montreal, France?? Was that real money?? Did she travel to all of those places? Was she a professional woman? What was her family's history? And what was the source for all of the beautiful images? They're esthetically consistent, which makes it seem like they might be from the same source. A popular magazine perhaps?? And the images themselves are interesting. Did you recognize any references to fairy tales or popular stories among those images? WOW!!! This is so exciting! It's time to interview Pierre!!

Thank you for showing such interest in my great-great-grandmother ! She was born on April 3rd 1874, and started the album in January 1881 which means she was just 6 years old when she began ! So I think it's safe to say she didn't to it alone. The images were cut from magazines, and an expert once told us that it was a popular pastime back in those days.
As for your other questions about Pauline Horth, i'm afraid all we can do is guess as we don't know much about her life. She lived in Arras in the north of France, not far from England, but we don't know how she learned english. The last page of the album is titled 'The foster mother', and it may have been this person that taught her, or perhaps an english maid. We do not know when her mother died, but her father was a pastor that drowned in 1882.
All that is known from the rest of her life is that she married in 1893, had 3 children and lived until 1956.
I hope i've satisfied your curiosity and wish you happy watching :)

When I open my childhood photo albums half of the photos come flying out... Oh, and the sounds were simply delicious. Merci beaucoup!

  • @TheDragonlover3

To see how tank-like these books were made to last for decades is simply amazing, our modern fragile laminates doubtfully would remain of use after 50 years of age... My grandmother's vocabulary book which she used for crosswords was already a tape-over loose page antique, and it was roughly 40 years old.
But this piece of art, in proper hands, with colours as if they saw no passing time, is an incredible sight.
