    I think voice alert could come in very handy for knowing when your buddies within Simplex range fire up their radios color and are sending out a beacon every few minutes.

    The FTM400 QSY tip also works on the FTM300. Getting there is a bit different as there is no touch screen so you have to enter a menu screen, but it is there. Also have to be in VFO mode on both A and B band. 👍

    Good job covering often overlooked APRS feature. I run this way in my Kenwood thd-74 At a recent local hamfest, I was able to see a few Hams that were there due to voice alert. 73 de W1WRA

      Thanks William. Since I started running this I have been able to contact a few hams as we were traveling the interstates. Great way to reach out to others when in unfamiliar territory. 73, de KM4ACK

    I've heard Bob B. explain it several times. The PL 100 idea is a good one. Even if you don't run APRS you can still tune FM on the APRS freq and listen for a 100 tone. If you hear a tone break through you can then call to see if the station is listening. Then QSY. Tone encode and decode is a must.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 лет назад

      Indeed the tone is a must if you run voice alert. Never tried it on a rig that didn't have APRS but can't think of any reason it wouldn't work. 73, de KM4ACK

      Recently tested on a TH-D7A, my arduino APRS digipeater and Direwolf like digipeater/igate, and don't decode my beacons. I can hear and decode other beacons, but my beacons are not repeated. I'll try with mi TNC arduino BT with another radio. 73's.

    Jason, very nice explanation on the voice alert for APRS and nice tips on the Yaesu FTM-400 dual band mobile radio. I enjoyed watching and learning from you. de W3DJS in Atlanta, GA.

      @@KM4ACK I don't think the end was so "bitter". :-) Yes, I have a Yaesu FTM-400XDR with a Diamond NMO antenna which works very well. Lately I've been using the Cross Band Repeat function so I can talk from my home QTH using a HT to get on the local nets. This is much preferable to using EchoLink to get on them which is less than reliable. So with the FTM400 on X-Band Repeat, I have the 2M net on Band A and an appropriate UHF frequency on Band B and the HT talking also on UHF to the FTM400. It works very nicely!

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 лет назад +1

      Speaking of X-Band.....you might already know this. You can use the X-Band repeat with APRS the same way you use it with voice. It will "boost" the APRS signal of a HT to reach out much farther. Another viewer sent me this tip not long ago. 73, de KM4ACK

    Ok, pl100, good idea. Many radios are only single "side" not like Yaesu R series, so this would work.

    Nice video. Thank you. Unfortunately, I can't use Voice Alert on a Yaesu FT5D... APRS is only available on Band B and it will not allow setting a tone (in VFO or Memory mode) when the APRS Modem is on. The SQL TYPE option is OFF and can't be changed. I can program a tone via the software, but it's ignored and SQL TYPE remains OFF. Bummer.
    Wouldn't mind having that QSY option too (doesn't exist on the FT5D)!

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  2 года назад +1

      Interesting! I just tried on my FT5 and it didn't work for me either. That seems like a bug in the firmware. There's really no good reason to block setting a tone just because the modem is on.

      You can do virtually the same thing with any rig. Just use the PL100 tone. Squelch will still open and you can put your call out and see if you get a response. You just won’t beacon on the APRS frequency. 73, de KM4ACK

    I usually run my Alinco DR-135s in scan mode, but one of my channels is voice alert. Occasionally, I will hear an APRS packet and I'll call out, but I've never heard anything back.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 лет назад

      Not very well as you wouldn't be able to hear the audio from the radio with it connected to the mobilinkd unless that works different from the HT's that I have used with the mobilinkd. 73, de KM4ACK

    One question: Do you know if using Voice Alert prohibits sending/receiving APRS messages, whether to another radio, or email, or a text (using SMSGTE)?

    While I've had APRS Voice Alert running in my mobile rig for several years, the infrequent times I've gotten the alert buzz, I've gotten no reply to my call to switch to 146.520. I think it's mostly base stations that have no operator present. That said, I've been unable to respond to about 1/2 of the alerts as I was on a cell phone call. So I keep at it!

    Jason do you know if the internal TNC in the FTM-400 is useful for Winlink? I assume this radio has a TNC port or maybe bluetooth for a Mobilink?

      I have seen others pull info out of the radio via the data port on the back to a computer. Not sure if it will take data from a computer as input. Maybe something I can explore in the future. 73, de KM4ACK

    I have mine set at 100hz, volume all the way down, yet it brrrrps every time my beacon transmits and beeps every time it receives beacon from a fixed station (base, weather, etc) or mobile. Not sure how everyone gets theirs to not beep, but mine beeps regardless of setting and volume

    • @applejacks971
      @applejacks971 4 года назад

      I've turned off some beacons and will change the range setting. Turning off some beacons helped with the beeps. I'm certain my issue is just a matter of getting some things switched off.
