  • From Catholic to Prodigal
I was born into a Catholic family on a Catholic island, Puerto Rico. When I was 2 1/2 my dad decided that he could make more money living in New York, so he went there first & got a job in sales and then he sent for me and my mom.
I remember growing up and going to church with my mom every Sunday - never failed - rain, snow, sleet, we went to church on Sunday. My dad never went to church-he had an excuse that he had a knee injury and that didn’t allow him to kneel in church. God forbid he couldn’t kneel in church!
Missing church was a mortal sin. Maybe my dad had a special pass from the priest. 🤔
Once I did my first communion, we had to go to church every Saturday for confession to confess our sins that we committed that week, to be able to receive communion on Sunday during mass. I remember sometimes making up sins. So, yes, I lied during confession. Funny, my mom never went to confession. She never received communion. Why? I didn’t find out until after my dad died. Because they were both divorced, then married and had me, their marriage was not official in the Catholic Church, thus, she was not allowed to take the Eucharist. Think about that.
In 1969, we moved up to upstate New York to a small town called Chester. The Catholic Church there, St. Columba, (Whoever that is) wanted to be hip, so they started doing folk masses. I joined the “folk band” and played guitar with them. We sang songs like “They’ll know we are Christians by our love”. I really enjoyed going to church. Since, I was forced to go, that made boring church fun.
When I went away to college in 1973, I went to a small town in Vermont and I went to the Catholic Church there. It was old-fashioned and boring. I decided I’d rather go out and party on Saturday nights and sleep in on Sunday mornings. That started my life as a wild child - a prodigal. I was a party girl. I’m really surprised I survived college. I was my own worst enemy.
My dad gave me a car when I turned 19. That made me popular in my dorm. I would drive 1.5 hours, with a car full of gals, to a frat party, get drunk, then drive back the 1.5 hours, through the hills of northern NY & VT. I’d wake up in my bed, in my dorm room, safe and sound, and I could not remember the drive back.
Looking back, I know that God had a plan for me, simply because I survived college. Not long ago, while reading a devotional, I read Exodus 9:16: “But I have spared you for a purpose-to show you my power and to spread my fame throughout the earth.” That’s why I’m doing this. This is God’s plan for me. I survived college to be able to use today’s Internet, video, and social media to spread His fame and His Truth throughout the earth...

    Lyrics
I wandered so aimless life filled with sin
I wouldn't let my dear savior in
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
Just like a blind man I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
I was a fool to wander and a-stray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
