As always Mark, you've provided me a wealth of information to help my wildlife pond. My local nursery has pond plants and they only sold floating hyacinths plants and water lettuce plants for ponds. Well just today I noticed the hyacinths have now flowered, so lovely! The water lettuce plants have been chewed and played with by the black bears while lounging in the pond, guess they like the taste. However the water lettuce plants are continuing to grow, despite the abuse. I will definitely mention your beginner plants here to the manager of the nursery with hopes they'll bring them in for next year's season. Thanks you!😀🌿🍀
Thank you for sharing your experience, water lettuce are very tough growing from the smallest heart, we are currently not allowed to grow them both in the UK due to a European Ban hopefully that will change as I love growing them!

Hello, I live in North Dakota and I have a water garden tub and was wondering what I would have to do for the winter as well as what plants would be best. For more information I live in zone 4 and kind of don’t want to restart my plants every year, though I understand if that is the only option

As your in America you have lots of options, I would enjoy the water garden, we have tougher plants that are the back bone mostly grasses and reeds. However the colour come from the annuals. Their are plants that will come back every year but they might not be the ones you want to keep!
My question is fertilizing plants. I understand there are tablets you can add to a container which contains soil but what do you use for floating plants? Is there a liquid you can use and how will it affect my Koi. I have a very good filtration system and the pond isn’t that big so I’m not planning on a lot of plants. I have a few but want to add more. I use barley straw to combat algae and it works great. My water with 11 Koi is pristine . Thank you for your help!
I don’t do any fertilizing of our floating plants (the fish do that) but you can add liquid fertiliser (if you wish). If your plants are struggling then give them time move them in to a stream or filter bed.

Hey hope youre well, question about the Reedmace/Bullrush/Cat tail in the pond. Do you personally recommend planting them in containers for the spread or in the pond substrate or even planted further from pond a few feet, have a 5ft by 4ft pond and worried about spread
Mark, I'm a keen follower of your videos. A couple of questions.... My pond plants did really well the first year but my water soldiers failed to float and basically appear to have sunk and died ( they haven't reappeared anyway!!). Cheered yesterday however when I spotted a tiny bit of frogbit appearing. Also my water lilies look weak and with poor growth even though I repotted into large containers ( washing up bowls) in April and fertilised them and put them in shallow water in the greenhouse to nurse them along. My husband says I fuss the plants too much. Water Hawthorn typha milfoil and marsh marigolds going great guns though. What am I doing wrong?? I love my plants and hate it when I don't see them thriving!! Thank you!!
Water soldiers can get trapped in blanket weed. They sink in the colder months. They also take everything from the water so you might have used treatments to control algae and the floating plants did not like it. Repotting water lilies is good 👍🏻 stable condition, I would keep them in the pond as they might get to hot in the greenhouse in a small container
Great question, personal preference, if you keep them in pots they are easier to manage, if you have fish they might knock them over. If you have under water planting pockets or gravel then plant them. If you are planting in a pond full of water. Wash all the media of the roots first.

As soon as I start the water flow using a pumb , the level is going down ..a lot . Do you have an idea why this is happening ? Thanks
Thanks for the video; very helpful for a beginner. I’ve got a small pond (approximately 50 litres), and wanted to know, which plants do I need for a pond this size please? Thanks.
Hi Mark - I have a small goldfish pond in London (250 gallons). I have circa 10 medium sized fish in the pond, which is plagued by a heron from a nearby lake, so I have to have a mesh cover, which is not ideal for border plants, as they grow through it making it impossible to remove. What plants do you suggest? Lilly perhaps?
Hi Mark. We bought a second hand preformed pond and we are hoping to keep it going without a pump just with plants. However this pond was a fish pond before hence it doesn’t have enough shelves for the marginals. Is it ok to create these shelves with rocks? Are there specific rocks recommended to use inside the pond? And finally, do we use any other material at the bottom of the pond (inside) such as building sand, alongside rocks? Thanks.
Hi Mark. i have been out at my pond today, no fish or filtration as I have two tropical tanks inside. my Lilles look like they are coming alive. how do I help with hair algae blanket weed? and how deep do they like the water pls ? your vids are awesome, thank you !!!

Hi Mark, my mom has a Koi pond with a pump that runs a waterfall but no filtration. I went down to the local lake outlet and dug up some lilies and some immersive plants. Bought a 6 pack of pond plants for my new wild pond. They are in plastic tubs. Do I remove them from the tubs prior to planting. No instructions came with the plants..!
Hi Mark You said that Pickerel Weed was a deep marginal. How deep can it be planted? What would you recommend for planting with a depth of 18 inches/45 cm above the pot?
Pickerel weed love up to a third of the foliage under water. So depends on the size of the area and the size of plant you want. If you have a 18” section you can grow it on top of another pot (a stage pot) to start with and as the plant gets bigger remove the stage pot.
Hi Mark. Plants come with soil... Should I remover the soil first? I actually did just put them in with soil and now I have really green water in my new pond 😱
Yes and No if the roots are a ball I would simply push or plant the root ball. If the roots don’t hold the soil if you shake the plant then remove. Don’t use garden soil as you will simply feed algae
hi mark..i'm being bought an affinity pond with Uv light and filter in, for my decking in the back garden but i was just wondering if the plants you mention are suitable as guy in shop said he wouldnt add 'Real.' plants as they would cloud the water. Is this true ?
Sounds like the guy in the shop is not a plant lover! I am guessing they have put the wrong plants in the wrong place! If you don’t have shelves in the pond use floating planters. I recorded a video a few weeks back about them. True water plants will clear cloudy water but these are submerged pond plants like oxygenators
Hi Mark . I live in Rome and am planning to build my own pond in my garden. This will have a dual purpose. First as a beautiful feature in my garden and secondly to populate the pond with fish that will eat mosquito eggs as we are proper infested here. So i would like to know if a pond with a filter is better than a pond without one seeing as i need to plant various aquatic plants and small fish. What suggestions do you have regarding which plants to use? Also how many levels should the pond have? Am thinking rectangular shape. 1m wide x 2m long Thanks for any feedback
Lots of questions, levels yes, filter yes better than without, if you build an ecosystem pond, link next comment you will not have mosquitoes, which plants second link/comment
Hi Mark! I love your videos - thank you for all you do! I digged my wildlife pond in winter and now it's time to get ready with planting! (I live in Ireland).. I was wondering about the Hornwort - would you just let it float in the water or put it into a basket?
Hi Mark I introduced 4 Water Chestnuts (Trapa Natans) into my pond in the spring as an experiment to see how large they got and how much shade they would offer the koi in my small pond. As promised they popped to the surface when the plants sprouted. I was just wondering that now autumn is almost with us, I'm expecting the foilage to die off but what happened to the actual chestnuts? Is that the end of them or will the plant produce more 'baby' chestnuts? Will the dead plants clog up the water pump? I have tried introducing dwarf water lettuce (pistia stratiotis) from my aquarium (which I have to thin out in my aquarium each week) but they have simply went yellow and faded away to nothing. ( I introduce CO2 into my aquarium) Is the pond variety another variety?
No the pond pistia is the same, they don’t like wind or yellow due to shock. The Trapa are tropical so keep some of the chestnuts indoors and regrow or simply buy new ones next year. Remove the 4 ds to stop the filtration problems.
Thanks for the video Mark! I wonder if you have a video or could make one about propacating existing plants in a pond, or how you can add plants on a budget. Here in Sweden it seems to be very costly for plants! 😬
If you’ve done such a video, I’d appreciate seeing the link, but I’d be interested in knowing which plants are, or might be harmful to pets? I haven’t noticed anyone refer to that topic, but before adding a likely enticing water feature in one’s yard, this would be important to know. I am aware too, of the need for safety concerns about small children, but that’s a different item to be mindful of. Thank you!
It strikes me that, a feature large enough for one’s dog to go in and out of might have certain filtering needs similar to water features used for fish? 🤔 Curious to hear about that.
Yes you can build a dog wash as I call them lol. Over filter these types of pond as they will bring waste in from out of the pond. Hair, dirt, plant material, it’s like a swim pond. Lots of filtration. 20% of the pond at least.
Not done a video on toxic plants as it’s a big subject and people have different experiences. You can find lists on the internet but the lists are names only and not why they are a problem. I have had no issues with a lot that are listed as toxic. Stay away from big trees, or lots of waste. Walnut and horse chestnut are very bad
@@ThePondAdvisor re: toxic plants...as I can see, water hyacinth seems to be something to avoid, but I'm glad I looked this up, I know to lean towards water soldier and water lettuce instead. But also, no cardinal plant! Which I had planned to try ar some point. I do expect now, if I add any iris, to put them in the bog filter, which won't be as accessible as the barrel tub.
I have been watching loads of your videos over the past few weeks. I am about to start digging out for a 6ft by 4ft by 2ft deep pond. I don't want to have a pump but plan to have 3 shubunkins and plants. How many oxygenating plants will I need?

Great video. I am going to build a pond for my turtles, Do you have a recommendation on what type of plants will survive their attack, they eat everything. Love your channel.
Growing fast growing plants will be the best idea. Building an Aquascape ecosystem pond will give the turtles plenty to interact with, a lot of the time I hear turtles or fish have destroyed plants is that they are kept in a tank or pool set up, with not much going on so anything become a toy or food. I don’t know what pond you are building or how many turtles you are going to keep.
Yes and No, oxygen is produced during the day. Oxygen is also used by plants at the same rate, but during the day they produce more than they use by a long way. If you have too much as the fish can’t swim, sometime the surface of the water is covered but just under the surface it’s clear. I would recommend up yo 3/4 of the pond surface covered. Anymore than that you might start having problems. If you have the correct pond circulation then oxygen levels should not be a problem (still water ponds and pools can have problems)
When did you buy them? Did they get too hot transit. Where they in little cups or a nice big tank before adding them to the pond. If they melt it means the leaves are old or damaged
Would you go over any of your older videos? Not being rude but I feel your quality in video sound has gone up and in some of your old ones I find it hard to hear you over background noise
We have a number of topics that we will be recovering but not looking at old video to replace old content, however repeating the information in new current content

Yes drop it in and let it move around
Are there any native evergreen plants suitable for the margins of a pond?
Yes, brooklime, watercress, lots of rushes,
Hi Mark I introduced 4 Water Chestnuts (Trapa Natans) into my pond in the spring as an experiment to see how large they got and how much shade they would offer the koi in my small pond. ( I introduce CO2 into my aquarium)
Is the pond variety another variety?
No the pond pistia is the same, they don’t like wind or yellow due to shock.
The Trapa are tropical so keep some of the chestnuts indoors and regrow or simply buy new ones next year. Remove the 4 ds to stop the filtration problems.
Thanks for the video Mark! I wonder if you have a video or could make one about propacating existing plants in a pond, or how you can add plants on a budget. Here in Sweden it seems to be very costly for plants! 😬
I have a couple of propagation videos. Lots of plants, lots of videos.
@@ThePondAdvisor , this makes sense.
50 - 70 % coverage
Are there oxygenators for sale in aquarium shops that also work, besides hornwort?
Yes but not hardy for the colder months of the year.
@@ThePondAdvisor , I suspected that was the case.
I never knew plant and pond rhymed.
is there any plants at lowes or home depot that i can get?
Great question, I am not sure, I guess at different times of the year they will stock aquatic plants
@@ThePondAdvisor i live in arizona so they don’t really have aquatic plants. i’m just trying to see if there’s any outdoor plants that can live in water
@@Projectcharles lots of water plants grow in the water just not sure about lowes or Home Depot, we don’t buy our nursery stock from big box stores. You can order lots of lovely water plants online!
Nice!
Thank you for your time.
Hi Mark. How do I get in touch with your shop?
waterfeature.shop/pages/contact-us
can you plant with no soil in a pond
great question, hope this video helps - ruclips.net/video/n7-AtVJUVjE/видео.html
Can you have to much oxygen plants in a pond
Yes and No, oxygen is produced during the day. Oxygen is also used by plants at the same rate, but during the day they produce more than they use by a long way.
If you have too much as the fish can’t swim, sometime the surface of the water is covered but just under the surface it’s clear. I would recommend up yo 3/4 of the pond surface covered. Anymore than that you might start having problems. If you have the correct pond circulation then oxygen levels should not be a problem (still water ponds and pools can have problems)
Thanks for your information.its a big help.
Very nice imrfrmomeson ❤❤
I found leeches in my pound is this normal? How can I get rid of them 😰
Plant leeches I am guessing not blood sucker, these live around the edges they love grass
All of my hornwort has disappeared why would this occur?
Winter, the growing season for hornwort is late
It should grow back if the fish have not eaten it all
I presume no chemicals or algaecide have been added.
My water soldiers just stayed sank, went brown and slimey
When did you buy them? Did they get too hot transit. Where they in little cups or a nice big tank before adding them to the pond. If they melt it means the leaves are old or damaged
Rather naive question but how do you actually "plant" then please?
Create a planting pocket or in baskets. In this video I create a little planting pocket. ruclips.net/video/V-sqqGPBHyw/видео.html
Would you go over any of your older videos? Not being rude but I feel your quality in video sound has gone up and in some of your old ones I find it hard to hear you over background noise
We have a number of topics that we will be recovering but not looking at old video to replace old content, however repeating the information in new current content
My fish just eat all my hornwart
They must be hungry or you have a lot of big fish
