  • What happens when politicians decide they are in a better position than business owners to know how much workers should be paid? We don't have to guess. Cities like Seattle and New York have already done so with their $15/hour minimum wage mandates. Simone Barron, a lifelong restaurant worker, recounts how "helping" her impacted her wallet, her career, and her life.

Like the fair-minded Progressive that I was, I thought a $15 minimum wage was an absolute good.
Then, I had a head-on collision with reality.
It’s a funny thing about reality. It just is. You can’t wish it away.
So, here is my cautionary tale.
For over three decades I had a good job working as a server. I have worked in some amazing, award-winning restaurants in Seattle.
I enjoyed the work. Met wonderful people. And I was making really good money.
I wasn’t making much, per hour-that’s true-but in my business, the magic is in tips. On a typical night, I would make on average $25 to $50 an hour.
Believe me, I earned it. I took pride in my work. I wanted every dining experience to be a memorable one for my guests.
I also loved my job for THIS reason: I had flexibility. I could plan my work schedule. That was very important to me because I had a growing son. It was a good life.
Then, in 2015, the Seattle City Council raised the minimum wage from $9.47 to $15 an hour-a 58 percent hike!
Great for the working stiff, right?
Well, hang on, because here comes Mr. Reality.
The business owner, the person who signs the checks, has to find a way to pay for this massive new expense. For Walmart or Microsoft or a large restaurant chain, this might not be a problem. For a local restaurant owner, it’s a nightmare.
Contrary to popular opinion, most restaurants don’t have big profit margins. In fact, most are razor thin.
Seattle restaurant owners, faced with this shock to their bottom line, raised prices, reworked their menus and created new compensation models.
Some did away with tips altogether, substituting a flat service charge as a way of navigating the climbing wage. That change in the tipping model caused a dent in my pocketbook. The rise in the wage did not cover the loss of the tips.
And, of course, they cut back on employee hours and support staff, too.
But for many establishments, none of these cost-saving measures worked. Restaurants, some that had been in business for decades, many family-owned, closed - including the ones I worked for.
Good servers don’t grow on trees. I was able to score an interview at another amazing restaurant.
Then, before I could even confirm the interview, that one closed, too. Same reason. The $15 minimum wage cut their profits down to nothing.
So, let me add this up for you.
I make a lot less money now than I did before Seattle decided to do what was supposedly in my best interest.
I used to be able to pay my bills as they came due.
    Now it’s a juggling act.
I used to have enough money to support my son’s extra-curricular activities.
Now I often just say no.
Before the minimum wage increase, I had one job and worked four days a week.
After the wage hike, I had two jobs and worked six.
With my skills and a tipping culture, I used to average 18 to 20 percent or more on any check. Now, instead of tips, I get a flat 14 percent, part of the 20 percent service charge the restaurant owner tacks on the bill. I still pride myself in providing good service, but the incentive to go the extra mile is gone. There is no way to maximize my income.
And what’s Seattle’s answer to my problem? To raise the minimum wage again!
The progressive idea is that you should be able to make a "fair wage". But if you have no job or are working more for less, how is that fair?

True! I've calculated how much the "cost" of an employee was in the company I work for in regard to what that person was actually leaving with in a monthly basis, an it was 126% more. More than double! Although much of that money is for 13º salary, holidays and social security that will (hopefully) return to the employee one day, people don't realize how much it actually cost to employ someone and that this fact reduces job opportunities which consequently reduces salaries! Obs.: That calculation was done in Brazil for a slightly higher than minimum wage salary.

Meanwhile UW determined that the minimum wage resulted in a net *decrease* in resources available to workers impacted by the minimum wage hike. @Nick21012 3 года назад +5

@Martin Purcell Nobody ever said that the free market only has winners! Only good companies can survive under capitalism. If consumers are unhappy with a product, they will buy less. The business will therefore improve their product so that more people will buy it. If that fails, the company goes bankrupt. This is capitalism! There are constantly new companies opening, because they believe that they can provide better goods and services for a cheaper price.
Minimum wage however is a government led problem, which has NOTHING to do with capitalism (it is socialism). If the minimum wage is $15 an hour, then small companies can't open, because they can't afford to pay their employees so much money. Therefore, the existing companies will survive.

    • @ricketycricket3242
      @ricketycricket3242 3 года назад

      @Martin Purcell Definition of capitalism;
an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
      Definition of corporatism:
Corporatism is a political ideology which advocates the organization of society by corporate groups, such as agricultural, labour, military, scientific, or guild associations on the basis of their common interests.[1][2] The term is derived from the Latin corpus, or "human body". The hypothesis that society will reach a peak of harmonious functioning when each of its divisions efficiently performs its designated function, such as a body's organs individually contributing its general health and functionality, lies at the center of corporatist theory.
Corporatist ideas have been expressed since Ancient Greek and Roman societies, with integration into Catholic social teaching and Christian democratic political parties. They have been paired by various advocates and implemented in various societies with a wide variety of political systems, including authoritarianism, absolutism, fascism, liberalism and socialism.[3]
Corporatism may also refer to economic tripartism involving negotiations between labour and business interest groups and the government to establish economic policy.[4] This is sometimes also referred to as neo-corporatism or social democratic corporatism.[5]
Corporatism was invented by the ancient Greeks and, Romans around 500 B.C.E. how can it be the end result, when capitalism was invented in the 1700's? The only one cherry picking is you. You clearly have zero idea what you're talking about.
I find it completely oxymoronic that you're bitching about capitalism via your cell phone which is a capitalist company, using your data provider which is a capitalist company, bitching about it on RUclips which is a capitalist company. A mom, and pop shop, is a capitalist company for crying out loud.
What's funny.. is clearly you're against capitalism. Everything you hate about it, is actually corporatism, witch is a liberal ideology.. witch you clearly are. Your guy's ideology is so stupid, you hate yourselves. One can't make up this kind of cognitive dissonance.

As a business owner, the $15 minimum wage means I will have to fire my lowest skilled labor and force my higher skilled labor to do more. It is a ridiculous idea whose sole purpose is to eliminate the bargaining power of the the employee and the negotiating process of all parties. Fundamentally, the only groups that benefit are the labor unions, who can negotiate BELOW the minimum wage, and the politicians who hope to get more votes.

This is why so many employers are going to part time hiring or independent contractors.
When I had a family biz years ago, I only hired contractors (through an inexpensive employment agency) on part time basis.
Since the agency was the "employer" there was a lot taken off my plate. Didn't have to worry about contractor not showing up because they always had a pool waiting to take his place. Didn't worry about providing benefits and taxes were between the agency and their employee.
      Worked beautifully.
I sold the business years ago when I had to move to another state and do to too much market saturation.
If I launch another one, I'll structure so no employee required. Just ocasional independent contractor.
Doesn't work for every business, but it can work for many.

Edit: Wow. Im shocked. I cant believe I even have to put in this edit in. Yall are so possessed your minds are like a jack in the box.
The reason why i didnt go after the likers of this videos before it aired is because you can support content that you agree or disagree with and I would bet nearly every normal person does. I do it every time I watch a Packers video, unless they are beating the bears (fyi the Packers and bears have a bitter rivalry). I can promise there are many who liked this video before it was show-able , but dislike pragers views. My sister comes to mind. In case, some of those likers just like the content subject matter (in my case football) or the fact this dialogue is taking place or maybe they are excited to hear the other side of the argument or they just like Prager videos.
You dont have to be ideological possessed to give positive feedback, but YOU DO HAVE TO BE IDEOLOGICALLY POSSESSED TO Automatically give NEGATIve FEEDBACK because that means when you first clicked on this political video you got that disgust feeling in your stomach and that comes from ideological possession. (if you think otherwise you are wrong, and I suggest you think about the Republican view points. I can promise you, if all the kneejerk thoughts are negative, then you should seek a wider social circle) Also its ok if you are possessed (you are not stupid and i dont think any less of you as a person. No body is perfect in this world or has all the answers), and it is easy to get in these tribal mindsets. As a young man, I for some reason hated the Packers and thier fans to an irational degree that I am embarrassed of today. It was because I was surronded by da Bear's fans and did not know a single packers fan. While all the adults ragged on the packers jokingly, I took their banter too seriously because I wasnt an adult yet and i lived in sort of an "echo chamber"/bear fan safe space. Get out of politics for a while and breathe. Trust me, the world wont end over night, even if the right gets control of the government again in 2020.

You should note that the only reason were expected to tip is because servers are usually paid a few dollars and hours and are expected to make most of their money from tips. So while this video may have you believe that this hurt servers in general, it probably didn't for most servers she may have made $20 dollars an hour in tips but at the same time there were more servers who were making $6 hr or less and were barely making $9-11 after tips. People don’t seem to understand that employers are buying your labor. I mean think about it: if you’re looking for candy at the store and you see a bag of nothing but chocolate for $10 and another larger bag with assorted candies for $7, which are you going to choose? It’s the same way with hiring. People aren’t going to hire you if the cost of your labor is high, especially if you have little to no job experience. That’s all the minimum wage does, alienates those who desperately need work experience. People are being deprived of work they desperately need, and since people are constantly entering the work force everyday, this becomes a huge problem! I know this because I live in SoCal, where I once took a resume to McDonalds, you know the first place everyone goes to to get job experience and they turned me away because I didn’t have job experience. Let me say that again: McD, the place everyone goes to to get their first job, turned me away because of my lack of job experience. Lower the minimum wage already!

      That’s pretty much it.
Generally speaking raising the minimum wage of $11.80 to $15 is a huge shock to the system.
They think it’s a good, and for some people it will be. Thoes who work regular hours and won’t see a reduction.
However the states going to see a mass rise in unemployment as business cut cost. And of course expecting employees to work harder for their dollar by cutting hours to get the same job done.
And then of course the raise in the cost of living. Which has a slight negating effect on the wage increase. Which also hurts the middle class. They see no increase, just a cost of living increase.
Really I believe the solution is to reduce the income tax on low income workers.
Yes the government gets less money in that regard, I’m sure they can find a reasonable way to recoup it.
But at leased the low income minimum wage works get the best of both worlds without increasing the cost of living.r

One day I hope a gutsy politician makes minimum wage $1 million per hour just to expose the scam once and for all. As an employer adding a bunch of zeros to the end of my asking prices does not bother me one bit because everyone else will do the same, I know minimum wage does not matter. I would however love to watch my employees spend their $40 million paychecks on $35,000 per gallon gasoline and $30,000 loafs of bread and see the light bulbs turn on in their minds once and for all. My favorite part would be watching them pay $18 million in taxes per week since they were now the super-rich. It would be worth the hassle of the price adjustment period just to watch the financial carnage of the poorest workers unravel itself right in front of their own eyes. The Democratic Party is a scam, too bad none of the hoople-heads sees it.
I propose this, that every time the Democratic Party wants to put minimum wage up that someone in the Republican Party offers to quadruple it. Many companies have raised their minimum wage and when you go in them now, there are fewer workers. It's simple math. I worked for a company that raised their minimum wage by $2. They ended up cutting back on staff. That was not enough so they then eliminated some manager positions and I lost my job. Many times when the politicians who have little experience in the real world, even if they have good intentions, get involved in telling private industry how to do their jobs, they often cause more havoc than they had hoped to fix.
Ever wonder why your health insurance is so astronomically high? Government interference. You may think you have a lot take out of your check, but research what your employer is paying on their end for your insurance and something will roll down your pants and hit the floor. Before the government mandated that employers carry insurance, it was affordable, even cheap. Before it happened I was able to go out and by myself good insurance, from well known companies, on a part time salary. A few years later, insurance companies were making money hand over fist with one sale and didn't have to worry about chasing down individual customers by having good prices.
When the Obama administration decided that 35 hours a week was full time and those working it should get benefits, employers couldn't afford it. They cut people down to 29 hours.
Beware of people who have only gotten wealthy because of their status as politicians pontificating on how to run businesses better. They can afford to make horrendous decisions because they will not be affected by them.
All the more reason we need term limits.

To those that replied to "D Rapas" comment: As minimum wage increases the employer has to pay more for workers. This cost is partially recovered by raising prices of their product or service. Therefore, The Grocery Market is a great example. Most people that buy a bacon argue that the price either has not gone up or has only slightly. However, They never look at how many ounces / pounds they are getting for the money. Next time your in the store compare prices to how much your actually getting. Currently you cannot buy a pound of bacon as they have all reduced the amount that comes in the packages. You will see this with other products too. Its not the fact that because people have more money that drives the price up. Its the fact that the increase in income has to be paid by the employer in some way. They either decrease their working staff, Cut hours or raise prices for goods and service.

It's not JUST the taxes on the employee's paycheck either and it all adds up to making sure that you're dependent on teaming up with someone to keep the bills paid. :( Their solution to raise min wage doesn't correct that, it's a bandaid. A lot of the issues relate to appreciation, expectation, and advancement....
For instance I see people that make nearly twice as much as me doing work nearly twice as easy complaining about how terrible their jobs are... It isn't that the job is that terrible. It is that they expected better. It is that they lack appreciation... It is that they feel trapped in that spot without access to advancement...
Likewise many employers will ignore quality employees due to high expectations from, lack of appreciation for, and unwillingness to advance that employee.
Mutual low expectations with high appreciation and willingness to advance each others interests with ones own efforts and responsibilities is key to a successful economy...
They also think in false terms... You say it will close down small businesses and they say "Amazon can afford it"... Amazon isn't a small business... Amazon can afford it, but we don't want massive corporations to be the only businesses that can survive the economic environment we establish... Amazon started with less than $300,000. The best big businesses are success stories from small businesses. We need to cultivate an environment in which the small business can thrive also. When they say "If their business can't survive paying a living wage than there is a problem with their business model" (I used to think like this) the next answer is the most obvious one when I realized it.
The problem isn't that the wages are low. It is that the living expense to wage ratio is high. The solution is to drive cost of living down rather than driving wages up... That has no negative impacts on the economy, no negative impacts on small businesses, and all the same benefits to establishing a living wage.

@Fuert Neigt Exactly! If you want to lower unemployment, then get rid of minimum wage! Minimum wage laws are pricing workers out of the market.
If the minimum wage is $15, then you need to be productive enough to make $15 an hour. People who have never had a job are not productive enough to make $15 an hour, which means that they will not be hired. However, if there would be no minimum wage, then they could get hired for $8 an hour or $7 an hour.
Then, if they get better at their job and become more productive, then their wages will increase (because their employers will want them to stay in their company. If they don't increase that persons wage, then the person can move to another job, where he/she will earn more money).

I’ve adjusted my tipping downward. If my wife and daughter and I go to dinner, it’s likely a $60 tab. Nowadays, I just tip 10%. If the waiter only had my family as customers for that hour, they would have made $19.50 an hour. Pretty good work for no skill. If there were three tables in the hour and they behaved like me, that waiter has now made $31.50 per hour. The point is, minimum wage did not need to increase for these workers. They were already doing well.

I give a tip based on the type of service you give me. I have paid more than 20% too. One time the back of house screwed up my order. Prime rib and it wasn't cooked right. The server went out of her way to make my order right. They even offered me anything I wanted and no charge. By that time I wasn't hungry. I had ate my appetizer, sides and bread. W only had to pay for my wife's meal. I think the whole bill was like $15. I gave the server a $10 tip. She couldn't believe it. I told her I wasn't going to punish her for what they did in the kitchen. And i have to wonder if the person in the kitchen did it on purpose. Prime Rib takes time to make and it's not just one severing at a time.

    • @Drew-fu8fc
      @Drew-fu8fc 3 года назад

The server isn’t getting all of your tip. At the end of the night, the server has to tip out to the bussers and expos, based on a percentage of their sales, out of their tips. So if they sold $1000 worth of food that night, they might pay 50 dollars to the bussers. This means your 10% tip is going to be a even less. If a server gets stiffed, they still have to tip out to the busser so they actually lose money on that table.

David King waiter takes risk. You might show up for a lunch shift, work for 2 hours prepping the restaurant before opening, and then lunch is dead and you get sent home making no money. You also risk getting stiffed or poorly tipped while also providing good service. The customer is essentially paying for good service, instead of the restaurant owner paying that salary. I’m sure a lot of restaurant owners enjoy seeing waiters provide great service that the owner does not need to pay for. Restaurant owners have the benefit of being able to not worry so much about how many hours employees get because they don’t have to cover their wages. There’s lots of benefits for both the owner and the employee and the customer because of tipping.

    • @davidking4779
      @davidking4779 3 года назад

@@Drew-fu8fc Salaries are subsidized by tipping which allows the owner to pay less and have well compensated employees. By at risk I refer to losing money, which a waiter never does. A waiter may make more or less depending on the day but never works at a loss. Restaurants depend on the good service a waiter provides, without it the restaurant will be unsuccessful. I live in a Country were tips are mandatory and added into the bill, later to be divided among the staff. It means there is no personal reason to provide good service. That is how socialism works.

Seattle caps how often a landlord can raise the rent, and how much they can raise it by. More importantly, landlords are governed by lease agreements; the amount of rent for the unit dictated in the lease agreement is the amount of rent the tenant pays, or else the city issues a substantial fine when you lose the lawsuit (and you will lose the lawsuit because the lease agreement exists). people who know the video is going to provide literally no arguments other than "minimum wage, along with other things, hurt me specifically, so regardless of actual statistics or data we shouldn't do it"

The same issue is troubling Australia too... Labour cost gets so high that nothing much is made in Australia anymore.

When the minimum wage went to $15 an hour where I'm at, the massive increase I have gotten in my pay was very noticeable. Sure I've noticed a few things I usually buy increase in price a bit, but I have way more money in my pocket now. I understand the arguments against it, but for me, $15/hour has made an enormous positive change in my life. I'm in my 40's, working retail. I've actually lowered how many hours I work now (less than 20 hours/week) because I don't need to work as much to get the same income. There are many arguments for and against it, each job sector will be affected differently. But personally? It's been great. Just understand how HUGE of a difference it can make to people making minimum wage.

Good for you. The increase didn't affect you, as you had experience and I imagine you've proven valuable to your employer. The issue arises when one wants to enter the job market. That $15/hour mandate may remove an opportunity for a teenager or say a college student working to pay tuition. The barrier to entry is much higher the higher the wage is.

A fair arrangement is a agreement between you(the employee) and the boss(the employer), and government should stay out of it. And only step in if asked like cause of criminal activity

Yes, by destroying businesses, removing jobs, cutting hours for remaining jobs, increasing prices, and destroying the ability for young people to enter the workforce.
Brilliant. You couldn't destroy the entire economy better if you tried.

Yes the larger corporations which the left loathes will adapt, and those smaller businesses will flounder and close forever, great choice.

I've seen the minimum wage raised from $2.75 hour 2 a whopping $10 an hour and still going up to 15 you're in Colorado Springs. Every time they raise the minimum wage restaurants have closed, people with good income lose their increased percentage and watch their rent Skyrocket. Every time the minimum wage was increased some of whiny young person who is made a lot of mistakes in their life the man the minimum wage to be increased because they "can't live off of minimum wage". Minimum wage was never intended to be a living wage. It was always intended to be a starting point for people getting started in Workforce. But because he keep raising the minimum wage more and more people who have been working hard to get ahead in the world wind up stuck exactly where they were when they started. Raising the minimum wage is insane. We need to lower the minimum wage back down to a dollar an hour and eventually and eliminate it. By slowly eliminating the minimum wage we can make the American dollar strong again.

When wages go up so does workers comp, FICA match, unemployment insurance, SDI, and other business expenses that don't get mentioned. If was just the wage itself maybe a few more businesses might survive.
