These linear life models are not made for everyone. Some of us need more freedom. More adventure. More vitamin sea.
So, meet Yuri!
A PhD awarded anthropologist, an ISKGA Sea Kayak guide, an entrepreneur, a true Moryak!
I was lucky to accompany Yuri and his team to tell the story of their journey!
This is a story about finding your place, choosing the path that is right for yourself. It is about authenticity, dealing with obstacles along your way, standing in for ideals and what it means to be Moryaki.

The amount of parallels between us is impressive. We both: lived/live abroad, play guitar (starting at the same age), loved punk, respect nature, are totally hooked on kayaking and have a strong link with Switzerland.
I just divorced last month because of my wife urged me to move to Switzerland, but I refused and stayed in Spain. I am Dutch, by the way. Oh yes, another detail; we both publish videos on RUclips! I would be very happy to meet some day. Best regards, Jasper.

We wanted to go to Asturia for a week of surf sessions last summer, but it didn't work out due to, you know... Hope we can catch up on that in 2021.

@@TomVetterl I’m busy with filmschool assignments, but I’m combining my MTB film idea with an assignment I’ll have to finish by the end of february, which I feel confident enough about to put out on RUclips!
What are you doing in terms of film school? Full time studying?
@@TomVetterl It’s part time, but the extra time I have because of lockdown is almost essential at this point, quit a high pace at the moment! 🤓

Do you think your experience as a researcher and anthropologist helps you to make better videos? You seem to connect with people. In addition to featuring beautiful outdoors, your movies are full of kindness, pedagogy and empathy. Maybe sea kayaking is just a medium for continuing your discovery of people and their stories. Hm well, so on the one hand I'm not Yuri (unfortunately), which means that I am not an Anthropologist 🙈. But I guess my biography is not very different from Yuris, though my professional background is Project Management in the semiconductor industry. In the end I guess it is all about connecting with people, being authentic and doing something you love, share it with people you care. I think that's what I do, what Yuri does, and what Moryak stands for.
I'm really happy that you like what we do here... Hope my job gives me a bit more free time soon to work on new projects 🙈

If you ever come up to Norway I'm sure there would be plenty of people wanting to sign up. Perhaps you should start a network of other passionate groups, you have the drive - everything from the best sea kayak clubs to those running build your own retreats. The core idea of finding something deeper inside when out on the water and a more sustainable way of living are a powerful and timely combination. Nice film., good story. What I appreciate is your sustainable way of living. How do you think about buying gear comes from China or other far away countries ? A lot of boats, paddles, carts, helms, clothing and other stuff cause a lot of pollution by transporting all over the world. How can we bring the production back where we live and pay fair prices? When we really concern about nature we have to repair our stuff instead of buying new cheap China-ones and produce lots of litter. How can we organise this in the seakayak world? Do you have an idea to raise awareness?

Well, thats a really good question... I think especially in Europe there are really good options for more locally sourced kayaking equipment, looking to the UK or also Poland.
For example, for fitting out the MORAK Mongolia Expeditions, all kayaks/paddles came from Rebel Kayaks, who produce in Poland. Also kayak gear ist great to be repaired, at MORYAK everything is repaired rather than replaced, from boats to paddles to textiles. In terms of raising awarenes, I guess we have to talk about these things more consistently and support the local businesses we have.
Fantastic,good on you all. Do people bother doing kayaking courses? Or would anyone just say it's beneficial in terms of health and safety.

I think Moryak provides a great mix of touring and training. I feel like both are booked equally, but I do feel like people are very interested in doing trainings and courses to increase their seakayaking abilities.

You mean the rolling clip? That was on the island Elba in Italy, wonderful coastline for kayaking! Croatia is awesome as well, but unfortunately I've never been kayaking there...

@@TomVetterl Yes, the rolling clip I meant. I assumed it was somewhere on the Mediterranean but it reminded me of one exact place on the north side of island Vis. You should visit Croatian coastline as we have almost 6000 km of coast to kayak :-) There is not too much sand beaches but if you need info let me know :-)
