Fuel Tank Removal & Fuel Pump Replacement - Nissan Xterra

  • This video will show you how to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump assembly on a 2005 Nissan Xterra. Rather than just replace the pump, the pump with the pump's assembly was replaced. The assembly consists of the pressure regulator, sending Unit, float, reservoir, strainer and tank seal. If your car's engine is still running and you are performing this procedure as preventative maintenance, drive the car till the fuel tank is near empty; otherwise, you may want to pump as much fuel out of the tank via the tank's filler hose port. Every gallon of gasoline constitutes seven (7) pounds of weight. Since the tank is plastic, it is relatively light. But with say 10 gallons of fuel, the weight may be 80 lbs. I drop the tank with using a wood board supported by a hydraulic jack. I then remove the pump assembly and pump out all the fuel out of the tank with a battery powered electric pump.

    Well i sorta cheated on my '06, my fuel pump was becoming intermittent which i found were the pins on the fuel pump connector were intermittently losing contact, i cut a square hole in the floor board under the back seat over the fuel pump,made it big enough if i ever need to remove the pump, i turned the cutout piece into a hatch, i disconnected the connector on the fuel pump and pushed some "conductive graphite grease" into the pins,pluged it back in,installed my hatch with the carpret cutout over it, its never had a problem again since 2012.

    On the two connectors you called alligator clips, I saw a Chrisfix video a while back where he cleaned sugar out of a gas tank and you don't need to slide the clip out of the connector, you just push in on the spine that connects the two parts that slide into the connector and you can pull it off.

    Hi. How did you get to a conclusion that you needed to change the fuel pump? My 2011 xterra is shutting down while driving. Sometimes choking for a second and then comes back. Sometimes the car dies completely and I have to hit the ignition again to restart on the side of the road.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  4 года назад

      Could be multiple symptoms. Going up an incline or hill under load and the pump can't build or maintain enough pressure to deliver the needed fuel. At a stop light, suddenly acceleration and the engine coughs. Slow, gradually acceleration, there's no problem. You can always get a T connector fitting that can hook up with your fuel line and a fuel pump gauge. Fuel pressure should at least be over 45 psi.
