    Loved this pattern. In the 1950’s my mother made us girls swimming costumes. It must have been the easiest and a great way to use up bits of fabric. Simply, it was just an overlarge oblong piece of fabric with a neckline and armhole added, and then rows of shirred elastic sewed on. The neck, leg and armholes were edged and the sides sewn up. Voilà - a swimsuit that left lots of pattern lines on our little bodies when it was removed.

    For that twin needle issue, I use a wash away stabilizer strip on the hem. Keeps the Hem stiff enough so that there’s no ripples, or skipped stitches. You also reduce that tunneling that happens between the two lines of stitches.

    One of my sewing group members was having the same struggles with your twin needles! She found that if she put stablizer (iron on interfacing for her, but whatever works for swimwear. Wash away stablizer maybe?) on, the problem was fixed! She was also using a jersey knit at the time. Perhaps try that?

    Hello there! My granddaughter and I are sewing this Simplicity pattern, and we are so grateful for your expertise. I got more support watching this than calling Simplicity in NY.😂 Patterns are not as clear as they use to be, and when the lining directions started, it was hard to see how to finish without a knit lining. Since we used cotton for the dress, not a knit, we didn’t buy lining. Can’t see how it is supposed to be finished around the neck and arm holes except hemming. Any expert thoughts would be appreciated! 🙏🏼

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude 2 года назад

      Hello there! I'm glad I can be of help. It sounds like you need a facing instead of a lining. You can make your own pattern pieces by tracing just the top section of the lining pieces so they're only a few inches long. In this video at 2.04 and 3.48 you can see the sort of shape the pattern piece would need to be. ruclips.net/video/wbk-LB5v7PI/видео.html
      Then you can treat the facing the same as the lining for this pattern. I'll see if I can't find clearer instructions for what I'm describing ☺️

    • @averyt9600
      @averyt9600 4 года назад +1

      Hi! I’m relatively new as well, but I’ve found that cutting out scraps of the fabric and testing different stitch lengths before sewing the actual garment has helped me get the best tension. On another note, your tension mechanism may be dusty. Cleaning off the top of your machine and adding some oil may help. Hope this helps!

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude 4 года назад +1

      Avery T has some excellent advice! Also, try changing the sewing machine needle if they get even the slightest bit bent or hooked at the tip they can do crazy things to your bobbin. It may also be worth trying different types of thread. My machine is a thread snob and only likes Gutermann or Coats. If it's still tangling after all that and you played with all the usual tension controls, it may be worth taking it to an engineer to check if it's a balance or timing issue. I hope all that helps!

    • @conniecreed3043
      @conniecreed3043 4 года назад +1

      Check your threading. Make sure you're threading your machine with the pressure foot is up when treading.

    1950s style had flattering silhouette. I certainly will be making myself a pair of swimsuits. Is the jersey needed, whatever for?

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude 3 года назад

      I think the jersey is just to keep everything close fitting and decent should the swimsuit actually be worn in water. It could work with a woven lining I guess but might end up a bit bulkier.

  • @seamsuneven7824
    @seamsuneven7824 4 года назад

    It might have been a bit easier for you if you would have measured the finished size of the bodice area of the swim suit pattern and then yourself and then graded the size to get a better fit before you cut it out?🤷‍♀️ But you got there in the end. Well Done. Yeah get a Tailors Clappers...they are not expensive and work VERY Well!

    • @RetroClaude

    I own this pattern but have not made it yet. Thus, my interest in this video. Here is my review of your video, which may be disagreeable, but I hope you take it to heart: Make the suit again, but this time do every step right the first time you describe it. Instead of finding out that something did not work and therefore backtracking, don't steer the viewer into a dead end, but warn them away from potential mistakes as you go along. All too often, in fact in almost all of these "tutorials" by amateur sewers (not just you), the narrator describes her adventure in making the garment, but then crashes and burns one or more times before reaching the end: A zipper is sewn upside down, or the facing was sewn wrong to right side, or, most often, the garment does not fit, etc. And usually the narrator does not know why and may even be teary on camera. This is not just amateur sewing, it is amateur YouTubing. Instead, be a professional. Have all the kinks worked out BEFORE making the video. No one wants to see, for example, a carpenter build a house to have it fall down for lack of knowledge and planning, or read an essay in which the writer continually backtracks to let you know of their editing and rewriting decisions. The same applies to constructing a garment.

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude Месяц назад

      Thanks for your disagreeable comment. Here's my disagreeable response.
      1. I never claimed this video was a tutorial. It's a making diary.
      2. I am a couture trained professional seamstress with 12 years experience in the film and theatre industry and a first class honours degree in Costume Production. With every project there is always an element of problem solving. No matter your experience or training. If you'd seen any of my other videos you would see that I regularly discuss this at length. I share my process for working through problems as they come up so that people can see how they can apply my process to their own projects. Teach a person to fish etc.
      3. I see from your profile you have never uploaded a RUclips video. Therefore I will not be taking production/story telling advice on what makes a good video from you. I admit this video has it's flaws. It was one of my first uploads and I was still learning. I've since got a lot better but if you don't like my style you don't have to watch.
      4. In addition your suggestion I 'work out the kinks' before making a video is simple not practical for me due to my disability. I have an energy limiting condition which means making several versions of a garment unnecessarily would be impractical for me. You would know that if you'd seen any of my other videos. In addition, as being a RUclipsr does not pay well, it's simply not a cost effective business model to waste fabric in that way. What am I going to do with 3 identical copies of every project I make?
      Not every video is made for every person. I did not make this video specifically to please you random stranger. It is entertainment. Leaving disagreeable comments because I failed to meet your expectations is your problem, not mine.
      Yours disagreeably, Retro Claude

      @@RetroClaude I may not have uploaded any videos, but I have watched hundreds of RUclips videos, on many subjects. And, I have spoken many times in front of groups, during graduate school and elsewhere. At no time did I come unprepared, or thought that anyone would be interested in my "journey" or "diary." Every word was edited multiple times, practiced and memorized, and most importantly, to deliver information. I never expected anyone to be interested in my girly mistakes or excuses.
      With RUclips videos, there is no supervision and no peer review. Uploading a video, per se, says nothing about your performance. Your audience is your only reference for how well you are doing. I will note that for the current video, after 3 years you have relatively few "likes."
      I am also an editor of medical research papers with 13 years of experience, helping scientists, physicians, and graduate students get their reports published in medical journals. Trust me when I say that no one gets published by reporting a lack of success.
      If you can't accept feedback, more power to you. But failure in videos is just as common as failure in sewing projects, and so is the opportunity for improvement, if you can take criticism.
