  • The 1980s saw the USSR’s influence and economy decline,The Soviet Afghan War, fought between 1979 and 1989, is one of the numerous reasons why the Soviet economy spent at least 27% of GDP on military expenditures rather than on civilian goods, which contributed to the USSR's failing economy in the 80s. Throughout the decade, the Soviet Union also saw four different leaders led the Nation: Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982), Yuri Andropov (1914-1984), Konstantin Chernenko (1911-1985), and Mikhail Gorbachev (1931-2022), whose policies of Perestroika and Glasnost aimed to increase the efficiency of economic decision-making by decentralizing it.
