As a Sens fan and Season Ticket Holder in Ottawa, some insight. The Senators ae currently working with the National Capital Commission, A Federal Government body who owns and operates Federal Government properties within the Ottawa National Capital Region, to purchase a parcel of land at LeBretton flats which is currently owned by the Federal Government. Michael Andlauer is frustrated that the government is dragging their feet on the sale but anyone who lives in Ottawa knows that his is just what they do. On the Quebec stuff, I'd estimate that about 80% of Hockey fans in Gatineau cheer for the Habs. Eugene Melnyk and the ownership groups before him did not do a good job at appealing to the French fans and the Gatineau market. Fans in Gatineau were pretty isolated from the team so that is absolutely a market they should be focused on. The Sens have the best shot of any NHL team to be the default alternate choice or French Canadian Hockey fans if they can appeal t that market. Having big name French Canadian players like Claude Giroux and Thomas Chabot helps as well. Honestly, nobody would even care about playing a couple games in Quebec City if it wasn't for Melnyk threatening to move the team there. It is naturally a very sore spot currently. I think that Andlauer has generally done a very good job with the team and he has repeatedly emphasized how committed he is to the Ottawa/Gatineau market and how everything he does is for the fans. I think that generally any attempt to attract new Sens fans or convert fans is good but I think Andlauer just tried to move a little too quickly before the current Sens fan were ready for that kind of move. It's a mistake and one he will no doubt learn from.

"pig" = "svin" /svi:n/ or "gris" /gri:s/ in swedish
"svin" is used like "asshole" in english, and is associated with boars. A "svin" is mean-spirited and a downright evil shithead.
"gris" is more used in the sense of "pig" where there is a brashness that is more accidental. It's still a gross and often inconsiderate person. They have a less calculated meanness. A "buffoon" is a good equivalence.
Just wanted to add more context for those looking at the original Expressen article.

He also earned a Gold Medal and an MVP in the World Cup of Hockey in between those two Cups. All this hardware in the span of a year. At the current rate, this clears any potential Cup Ovi wins this year, unless he has some Herculean feat in the playoffs, which I would not put past him.

Andlauer wants to grow the Sens brand akin to the Green Bay Packers, in the sense that the Sens are a small market franchise and finding a few fans elsewhere would go a long way to helping the franchise sustain itself in the National Capital Region.
What he failed to realize is that the previous ownership has threatened to move the team out of the region and even suggesting the Sens play pre-season games, let alone regular games (which he did), not to mention scything the Sens logo in half, might trigger the fanbase. Learning moment for Andlauer and the Sens senior management.

Between Nov. 5th-Dec. 10th, Elias Pettersson has 22pts in 17 games. He was scoring at 1.29p and was on pace for 106 points before slowing down. That Pettersson is still in there somewhere. If the Canucks aren’t able to to unlock that (they are completely underutilized the Sedins), another team definitely will and it will be another “the one that got away” situation.

I wonder if we look back on the Canucks saga in a couple years the same as the Flames. One phenomenal season that flamed out in the second round and the team fell apart due to off-ice issues (in the Flames case, dealing with Sutter).

    • @ajbolt7
      @ajbolt7 7 дней назад

Perhaps, but the Flames had decent to good regular seasons prior to that phenomenal season. They'd made the playoffs in 3 of the last 5 years leading up to the 2021-22 season. Hell, that season wasn't even their only 50 win season they'd done the same in the 2018-19 season.
I'd say that's a huge factor that differentiates them from the Canucks saga. There was effectively 0 success for the Canucks in the regular season from 2019 to 2023, and the only post-season appearance in 2020 was purely by luck. If the season had progressed as normal the Canucks weren't going to be there.
All of that is to say this Canucks team has not experienced success before that one season. More importantly, the issues that are apparently destroying the team now are issues that have been festering for half a decade allegedly? Off-Ice issues that seem to extend far beyond any individual players now. There's so much drama that spans years it's going to be something else entirely when we can finally look back on it in hindsight.

The difference between Washington and Pittsburgh in the last few seasons is, the Penguins kept swinging for the fences and failed address their depth, while the Capitals were decimated by injuries until this season but were trying to add pieces that improved their team. There was a chance for the Penguins to stop the bleeding, but instead they doubled down at getting older, slower, and having less depth with some bad signings. After several seasons of the Capitals being gutted by injuries, this season they're the team they're supposed to be. Ovechkin is a feel good story in Washington but isn't being relied on to drag the team kicking and screaming into the playoffs the way Crosby still is.

added context for the sens/Nordiques jersey that makes it make a lil more sense (still idiotic): Sens are playing 2 pre-season games in Qc. This is to promote that.
You guys also missed Andlauer's quote about wanting to play REGULAR season games in Qc, which Bill Daly clearly did not like. I feel like this is the much bigger, developing story. Either Jesse is right and this man has just forgotten he's not in Quebec anymore.... are is Adam right and he is legitimately using Qc city as a threat? I don't really believe that.... but Andlauer does have reason to be pissed of at the NHL and has not been shy about being vocal. He is BIG MAD about that lost pick and frankly, I agree, Gary shafted him right after purchase. But using Qc city like that? It's just pissing off your fans and potentially pissing of Quebeckers who are probably kinda tired of being used as pawns by the league when they want to drive up prices.

The Tocchet Canucks want to play 2-1 games where both teams grind their way to 20 shots and Van is better at doing that than most. Low-event system is everything (and it does give more time and space to their d-men, of which Hughes can exploit, which in fairness could be a winning strategy). Everyone buys in and everyone... wins?
Tocchet believes practice makes perfect. If you're not perfect, practice IS the reason why. He's probably the ideal coach for grinders.
Pettersson is ridiculously smart and talented, and can play great two-way hockey by reading the play. He got a bunch of Selke votes centering Andre Kuzmenko. Meanwhile all he's done in the last 1.5 years is try to rigorously play defensive system hockey and hilariously it doesn't even make him or his line defensively better but he has clearly lost all confidence in his offensive ability along the way. Funnily enough telling him to practice harder hasn't fixed that.
JT Miller can play an outstanding grinding game if he's actually focused and bought-in. If their ages were reversed the Canucks would take the slightly less capable player who fits their system perfectly every time.
Even if they trade Miller they're going to have to bend their system if they want any of their forwards to become risk taking offensive stars. Assuming they want to stick with Tocchet they screwed themselves by not moving Pettersson last year, the dude can't excel playing grunt hockey.

GM's need to start giving shorter contracts and paying less for the top players. Both JT and Pettersson are worth less than 6 M a year. Both over paid. No team needs these boat anchors. Kudos to players who take less like Sid the Kid and Brad Marchant.

You guys should come to an NHL game in south Florida it's pretty cheap and enjoyable. Picked up a 4 game ticket pack that includes a Bobrovsky bobblehead for 125$... so good. Tampa is cheap too every game for either team has 15-25 dollar tickets most of the time. Being an NHL fan down here used to suck until around 2014 then it only kind of sucked, and now its been awesome for half a decade with both arenas within an afternoon drive. Love the pod cheers

hum... the Petterson talk at the beginning makes it sound like he's a soft guy... Not in the way he plays be in the way he handles criticism. Doesn't sound like the type of personality that reacts well to getting pushed or pressured. He seems the more new-school gloves on approach of positive reinforcement. We've seen it work and coaches adapt to it, but god damn that must be rough in a dressing room with 25ish other guys.
Do not like, hope it's just an impression and not true.

1:19:32 @Adam Wylde. No because Ovechkin far and away is being fed goals and wouldn't be the reason they won the cup. 2016 pens with Hainsey top pair still more impressive by a mile.

I haven't seen a bruins pp this bad since 2011... Ideally, Lindholm goes back to Van for Miller and our top 2 defenseman return from injury.

Me myself fint it refreshing that a person in power of the nhl is forthcoming. That is not usual but still something we always scream for. Then again, I have the image of Rutherford to be a person that historically has been open towards media. Same media that complain about GMs not saying anything.
Also, we don't need to judge and direct blame. We can simply analyse. We all have a thought of how things started but its now kinda beyond simple blame.
Hell, didnt Horvath also get in team scrums at the end of his tour hence this goes way back.
Ease up on the blame and focus on analysing what we know, historically, following a red thread backwards.

Hey Steve, right now, you're the youngest you'll ever be. At the same time, you're the oldest you've ever been.
I teach in Japan and have students from 20 to 80+ years old. Nobody is happy at their age. Everyone feel old.
What I take from that is this: nobody's old until they decide it themselves and sit on a rocking chair on thier porch yelling at clouds.

As a canucks fan life is pain. Its been a decade of bad hockey and wasted talent here. They finally get good and watchable and they fall apart
