Countless hours of my childhood have gone into this absolute gem of a game. I still remember how my dad forbade me from playing it because I used to select all my units and press Delete just to see them die. Must have been like 8 years old. XD
What age are you in? Give me your extra resources! Attack an enemy now! Cease creating extra villagers. Build a navy. Build a wonder. My granny can scrap better than that. START THE GAME ALREADY!
Goosebumps start from 0:00 How beautiful they have created this music. It has an essence of history which takes you years back when there were kings and kingdom , the age of civilisations.
This game makes up so many of my early memories...ah, nostalgia. Its strange, I couldn't remember the music off hand, but the second I hear it again all the experiences come rushing back. I barely knew any history back then, so this explosion of cultural vibrancy really left its mark on me.
Ah, thank you very much for posting this. I have had 11:54 stuck in my head for a while now, and not being able to hear has driven me mad. Fantastic games. Any true RTS player who knows the classics remembers this amazing series.
The Middle Ages, what some presumptuously called the Dark Age of Europe, but then, the picture was more complicated, indeed, there was a terrible decay with the fall of Rome, but that fall was inevitable as the Empire has grown economically and politically incapable to hold itself. Then the migrations from the north came, sometimes as plundering invasions, sometimes just as tribes who looked for new land less harsh than their native countries. And then civilization, who appeared to have been shattered in the meridian regions, started to creep out to the north, in the form of missionaries, merchants and explorers, slowly those northern barbarians learnt that they could inherit more than swamps and ancient age tools, by aping, copying Rome and Greece or just finding their own way they started to create new civilizations from the cradle of savagery and barbarism where they were born, nations whom one day would became the rulers of the world. Yes, Rome has fallen like all empires inevitable fall (but then we may defy such fate yet as we have defied other terrible truths and dooms), and it was the time for northern europeans to ascend far higher in the path of civilization.
+Eduardo Rivera I also think it's true that the name "Dark Ages" is somewhat of a misconception. Still, when you - for example - compare the level of architectural works and designs during Rome's heyday and the ~4th-10th century in Europe they seem to be worlds apart. Of course the eastern empire carried on the torch with even more impressive work, so the high civilization and knowledge wasn't exactly dead, it was just drained from Europe for a time.
Well. Europes culture today is Germanic-Roman in the Dark Ages when Europe was divided Germanic tribes who only fought eachother but then another force threatend all germanic people. the Caliphate who now tried to invade France. After the victory against them of Charles Marlet he and hes descedents (Pepin the short and Charles the Great ) started to bring back Roman teachings and knowledge to the People but with a german twist. the French and Germans trace their history back to Charles
Constanta Amnesia Yes and I've always thought it a bit ironic that the (in most part) ancestors of the "gauls" in a way almost thirsted to bring some of the ways and the knowledge of the romans back. The empire which their ancestors were part in bringing to its knees. Although I guess it's hardly accurate to compare barbaric tribes from Gaul anno 300 with the civilization of Charlemagne
I'm a senior graduating this year. I can't tell you how many hours I spent on this game.. It was probably about 8 years ago in 4th grade when I started playing this amazingness. From that year all the way to my 8th grade year, all I did was come home from school and play this all night. In the summer, I stayed up till 6 a.m. finding online games. Great times. Rock on AoE.

You: "Yeah well you should see the other guy." (Shows Player 4 thats still in the dark age XD)
I always played this game with my father late at night, when i was 5-7 years old. Beautifull memories! ;) He played and I watched him. We had so much fun together. This music gives me sad and happy feelings at the same time. Great game!
I remember going to my cousins house in Seattle to see and play Age of Empires 2 for the first time. I was only 8, I had never experienced an RTS game before. The only PC game I had played before this was Lego Island 2. I remember them powering it up on their Gateway PC with massive 18" CRT, speakers, beige box, the total package. My oldest cousin was describing to me the premise of the game and I could tell he was super excited to play it as well. I don't remember what civ he picked for the first game to show me, I just remember we built our little town out into a formidable fortress and I couldn't believe my eyes on how 'lifelike' it all looked. We ended up playing for over 24 hours straight. I'll never forget those memories.
