Honestly as the organizer I´d just put the on the board as unorganized as possible to try and taunt him. Just so one time when he wants to play serious he just can´t help but rearrange the pieces because they are just bothering him too much.

I do something similar at work, we make one t-post every second for 12 hours a day, they all have to be hung and spaded by hand one time every second as well. After making about 2 million posts over 2 years, it gets dull, and what used to seem like a super human task has become almost too easy.

I'd argue the hardest challenge in chess is when your enemy can predict your moves especially multiple turns in a row. When you intentionally put yourself into a difficult position then you confuse your enemy, gain psychological advantage, destroy their plan to counter your "projected moves" because you changed the trajectory of the game. When done right it is really gaining advantage to when you put yourself in a difficult position.

honestly it almost feels like magnus cant rly gain anything when he plays
if his opponent almost beats him, it's basically a win for them in the eyes of so many ppl
if they draw against him, then they drew against the GOAT
if they win against him then that is super impressive
but if thry lose to him then the expected result comes true.

    • @starz3415
      @starz3415 3 months ago +230

@dittowithglasses9837This is exactly true. Also, consider the fact that he's so higher rated compared to them that he barely even gains elo rating by winning anymore and loses a lot of rating points with every draw and loss. Besides the prize money and his desire to play the game, he basically has no motivation to play anymore. As for the title itself, he's held it so many times that it barely holds significance to him anymore

I don’t think Magnus slammed the table because he hates losing. I think he was mad because he lost after not taking the game seriously enough. I think He’s fine losing when genuinely outplayed what hurts is realizing the loss came from his own lack of preparation.

Carlsen has said plenty of times he doesn't have autism, and wouldn't ever miraculously show autism in a diagnosis, as he never has before. To quote him on subclinical autism: "Years prior, when asked if he suffered from autism, Carlsen replied, "well, isn't that obvious?". He later termed this response "silly" and "thoughtless," clarifying, "I'm obviously not suffering from autism". Carlsen has never shown any tendencies towards autism or ASD..."

    some info on the guy
Before Magnus Carlsen amazed the world with his prodigious chess talent, he was just a kid lost in deep thoughts. His dad was even a little worried about him.
"I was a bit concerned about the relative development compared to other kids," Henrik Carlsen says in "Magnus," a documentary. "It was kind of hard to give him instructions on how to do things physically and it would be difficult simply to show him. He's got to think about it."
But Magnus was not slow, far from it, he showed an extraordinary talent for intellectual challenges from a very young age. He could solve 50-piece jigsaw puzzles, typically meant for children aged 4 to 8 at two years old, and enjoyed assembling Lego sets with instructions meant for 10 to 14 year olds at the age of just four. “After such ‘Lego days’… he could lie awake at night, wide‑eyed and unable to sleep because he kept thinking…[about] which pieces needed to go where.”
He also had an extraordinary memory and an unusual mathematical aptitude. When he was 5 years old, Magnus memorized the populations, capitals, areas and flags of all the 200 countries in the world, much to the surprise of his family, who had no idea he was even attempting such a thing. He had even taken it further, though, by memorizing the same numbers for all the 400+ municipalities of Norway. “the numbers were telling him a story or more specifically showing him a picture.” His father recalls. His appetite for numerical data did not end there, he would commit various sports figures and statistics to memory and would attempt increasingly complex mental calculations. He seemed to have an intuitive understanding of numbers and their properties at a very young age (something not uncommon for math prodigies). According to Kurt Carlsen, his grandfather (a retired chemist) “He would be thinking ten to the second, ten to the third power, and he would go on and on,”
At memory games he was always unbeatable. He also had a desire to know and memorize all the common car names and makes and he also has the first two seasons of House memorized. When questioned about it by an interviewer he said he didn't know why he would gravitate to these things, he just did.
“No more than I can tell you why I wanted to do 50-piece jigsaw puzzles when I was not even two years old. Why did I want to know all the common car makes at the age of two and a half? Why did I read books about geography at the age of five? I don’t know why I learnt all the countries of the world by heart, including their capitals and populations.”
Sagar Shah, during a recent interview at the Paris Freestyle event, comments on Carlsen’s unusual memory.
“Magnus you seem to remember these things so vividly, we’ve done this test with several players here, they all have a bit of a hazy memory. When it comes to past games, years get missed, tournaments not so clear, opponents often they remember, but you have like this, as if you just played it yesterday.”

  • @laernulienlaernulienlaernu8953

He's just levels above anyone else. That's why he plays while drunk, makes deliberately bad moves or openings, forces it into an endgame as soon as possible and has gone all in on Freestyle.
He doesn't have anything left to prove and he has a family now so I don't blame him for not wanting to play in long, drawn out tournaments where the organisers need him more than he needs them.

There are two predominant theories about Magnus, and I think both are wrong. It's not "He could win these things easily if he cared more.", nor is it "Magnus is too old and washed and nowhere near his prime". It's more that when you have already achieved the highest accolades like 15 years ago, and you've already done everything, and you've done it again, and the only way to keep on with the pursuit is to do the same thing again and again and again, it's extremely hard to get your mind in the game. It's about incentives and motivation. People don't wanna be stuck in a rut. We naturally wanna move on and achieve new things. Though I do believe he is a little weaker than he was at his very best in part due to age. Maybe after long enough, all of chess starts to melt together. Or he has played too many Blitz games. Idk. Players do seem to have gotten better too, closer to Magnus' level. Beating him isn't such an incredible, unbelieveable thing anymore for these guys. It used to be a lot more about Hikaru, but he is now not really considered to be at the very top level. Some of Magnus' toughest opponents were already around early in his time at or around the top, but they've grown stronger, and there are more rivals like that now.
So it's multiple factors coming together making it tougher for Magnus to win as reliably. Yet he seems to pull it off. He just needs to make sure his dramatic flair doesn't shape how he thinks about his playing.
