This song ALWAYS takes me back to my Southside of Chicago High School 1976-1980 days. During that time, my school & this neighborhood where it's located was & still is an all Black community. But, we were STILL taught by White teachers. Our freshman music teacher we thought was a bit strange, but I guess we were too @ 14 years old.🙈 One day, in class maybe she was contemplating on what she was going to teach us, and came up with this song that she played on the piano. Then she would stop and guide us through the dance routine! We TRULY thought she'd lost her mind. But, we had too after we had a few classes with her. When we left that class for a different class, math or science whatever, we were exhausted, giddy, curious as to why she wanted us to learn it. When I told my mom about this, she explained that, #1. It was a Jewish folk song and she heard it as a child in her Hasidic Jewish neighborhood. (My mother is biracial) & my grandmother was a single parent) & (Black Christian family here). #2. Don't be so quick to judge! Keep an open mind to new things. #3. Maybe my music teacher was Jewish, and wanted to "share HER heritage" with us! So, I went back to school and shared this new-found information with my classmates which gathered a bit more support & participation from my classmates who were resistant to try the dance! ✌🏾🙏🏽 Thanks Mrs. McGuire. This memory has lasted 40+ years in my head.🤣😂🤣😂🙏🏽#PeaceandUnderstanding
