Climate change was never about saving the planet. It's always been a geopolitical tool to prevent industrialisation of the global South, so that Western Industries don't have to compete with them. It's also used to push down living standards of global South so they remain a source of cheap raw materials extracted by cheap labour. There is good book called kicking away the ladder by Ha-Joon Chang. He makes a great argument that developed countries have always used all sorts of tools to prevent industrialisation of the global South & succeeded in protecting Western corporate interests.

South Africa and the rest of the coal-rich countries, should continue exploiting coal production for the next 200+ years. SA in this scenario should NEVER take advice about coal, from the West Imperial Forces (USA, France, Germany, Canada and the UK). If coal is our shortcut to industrializing our economy, then South Africa should march on by mining coal.

I was born and am still currently living within the coal belt, specifically Witbank. The residents of Wibank/Emalahleni agree that we should try and keep the industry alive, especially seeing that it and other related industries contribute about 70% to our local GDP. So the closure of Cole mines will devastate the local economy - that's been established. However, the for or against coal debate remains a polarizing one in Witbank as some argue there also are serious health implications in the burning of coal - some 500 people die annually as a result. Furthermore, this points to a bigger problem in the sense that our local economy is simply not diversified enough and has been dependent on a single commodity for close to a 100 years- thats our fault.

It's crucial that we engage in a thoughtful discussion about the future of energy in South Africa. I echo Zamisa's sentiment that our country's dependence on coal is a significant factor, especially considering the economic implications and job losses associated with closing coal plants. I'm interested to hear the perspectives of both the department and the government on this matter. Transitioning to new energy sources is essential, but it should be done in a way that considers the socio-economic impact and job sustainability. Let's hope for a comprehensive and sustainable energy strategy that aligns with both environmental goals and the well-being of our workforce.

This clearly shows that SA has no business in trying to stop coal use anytime soon, SA will have to deal with these NGOs, they cause a hindrance in many sectors. Hopefully, SA can win the right to explore the sea for gas as that will also help us in many ways.

Dig deeper into the coal industry, you'll be shell shocked how much the media has made us doubt ourselves as a country. Historically, Eskom has been slowly brought on its knees by the mining industry. Unfortunately, the people or leadership regime that was tackling this head-on was labeled corrupt and decimated as it still is currently.
Zimasa is showing one key aspect on a myriad of challenges we're dealing with. We're being segregated through 7 strategic pillars, which has always been. Let's wake up SA and see what we're dealing with as it is. Thank you Zim, this is a massive contribution. I just hope more people can see. We need each other, and we need to pull the little resources we have together as people and start building our beautiful country. Clearly, the SA government will not do anything for us.....

Watched this while washing the dishes and it was mind blowing. I'm an Undergrad electrical engineer currently and install domestic roof top solar for my practicals and I've always known in the back of my head that panels, inverters and batteries are not the answer but a temporary fix.
You are spot on when it comes to SA national interest, coal is cheap and abandant and that is what we must use to keep energy in SA cheap and thus maintaining the countries competitiveness.
If you get the time to read my comment I would like to point you to some of the Green Energy Policy that the EU is undertaking and why South Africa NEEDS to go green to maintain favourable trade relations with the EU so it's not all bad but at the same time South Africa must maintain its 'dirty energy' sources and also expand on the renewable side.
Lastly NGOs and SA biased media are the unelected government. I remember the protests against Zumas attempt to introduce Nuclear from the Russians and the protests against fracking off the coast of Western Cape. I was young and naive at the time and thought it was right. Knowing what I know now as you've correctly put it, we have lost a huge opportunity in exploring this avenue and adding these sources to South Africas energy mix.

    • @tpmash

The renewable energy has got nothing to do with trade! All lies!!! This is all part of the WEF Global Reset! You’ll own nothing and be happy! Everything about renewable energy is to cripple the countries economy! We don’t need! Our carbon emissions aren’t that bad and also who said carbon is bad for the environment? If you studied biology you’ll know that plants need carbon!!! Wake up!!!
