It's fascinating to me that even with the best husbandry, the anuuals still don't live any longer. It's almost as of they have an inbuilt self destruct button.
Whoa, I'm 23 seconds into the video and had to stop just to comment on the intro. That there is a game changer in production . . . the footage and music! Yeah, I'm impressed! It reminded me of Netflix's Chef's Table intro. I love how you are elevating our hobby with your personal flair.
I have never seen such great cinematography with an animal video. This channel is a huge inspiration to me and my reptile videos. Thanks for posting such great content.
Great vid Jimmy. I would have added that the key to keeping many Killie’s is live foods. While there are ways around this, their egg production is magical when they have live black worms. Also, those Nothobranchius are super susceptible to velvet. Most killifish people keep them with a teaspoon or two of salt per gallon to keep the velvet at bay. Cheers, Chris
I live in Las Vegas and I have a 1000 gallon Koi Pond. I went to a nursery that sells pond plants and they had lily plants in water. When I looked closer, there were a bunch of Blue fin Killifish in this 5x5 2-foot-deep bucket. The shop owner told me that there must have been fish eggs in the plants when they arrived from the nursery. Anyway, she gave my about 15 of these Killfish free of charge and I put them into my Koi Pond. 2 months later, and the Killifish are thriving in the pond...probably 50 or 60 now. My question is, will they survive the winter? In Las Vegas, it gets down to about 40 degrees overnight. I would hate to lose them...I've grown pretty attached to this thriving community!
I’ve been collecting pacific blue-eyed rainbowfish, a 5cm long dwarf rainbowfish species, from my local waterways (I live in central Queensland Australia) for years. They are supposedly annuals as well. But I’ve had one female with me for over 18 months (she was already an adult when I collected her so her age would have been well over 2yo) and some of her offsprings are still with me now 3 years later. Pretty sure captivity changes fish’s lifespan.
@@fredhankins7672 i suspect being in captivity just changes something in them, not genetics. i have seen people on the forum from south america having the same experience with wild collected tetras. it's more to do with the constant water temperature/parameter and constant lighting (as opposed to natual sun light which varies in length throughout a year).
When i lived in the Solomon Islands as a kid, my friends and i would go fishing in the drain (roadside storm water flow area) for what my parents would call "guppies" and i would always wonder for years thereafter where they came from because i knew the drains dried every year. Now i'm looking at these and think WOW these must be the little guys...
Yes! Please hype killis! My LFS only ever carries golden wonders. I've begged them to order in clown killis for me numerous times but they "don't sell enough."
I got one of the last two pairs of the black pearls about a week ago, wish I got both pairs. A beautiful and fun fish to watch and hope I can get them to breed. Great video!
I'm impressed with the shots. How do you get that completely black background but with the fish on the spotlight? Perhaps I missed where you have explained that before.
Try hatching killifish eggs from eBay and make aquascapes for them! That'll be one helluva project to record and document! (Hello from reddit, I'm a fan of your videos!)
First time commenting but I just had to say that I really enjoy your videos. They’re artistic and you capture the fish in such a beautiful way. I also like that you experiment with the videos. Keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll keep watching!
Hi, great video, I am wanting to add a single killifish to my 200L community tank which has a betta, anglefish, gourami, rasbora and corys. The tank is heated to 79F. Its densely planted, wild a single Male killi be ok? Would it fin nip the others? Thanks
Have you ever been to the South Shore of Long Island, Waterway called the Great South Bay we use them as bait in Salt water.... a bland Grey and black fish..,,,buuut, because they breathe air you can train them to be freshwater and all the colors explode... I know this for a fact because one time I did it with my turtle tank, I thought they were going to be easy food but three months later they were every color in the rainbow,, and they were as big as 5 inches Long
Annual killi's are some of the most gorgeous fish I've owned but it does suck that they don't live long AT ALL, especially by the time you get them full size from the fish store. Your best hope is to get a pair and get them to spawn in what little time you have with them and hatch the eggs (very difficult, I've never been successful so have only tried a few times). Some of the longer living species like gardneri killi's are also great to own and live up to a few years.
I own a couple gardneri , the male is beautiful but they verry agressive , 2 time they jump out of my tank and alway attack otherfish , they eat all my rasbora fish
"you have to yank the eggs out of the water for a couple of months" well, it is a little more complicated than that. You have to pull out the spawning container, which typically has peat for the fish to lay eggs in, dry it a certain amount, then store them. After a period (which can vary from 10 weeks to 4 months depending on species), you have to begin to check for eyes in the eggs. And the whole time you store them, you have to watch for fungus which can destroy an entire batch. Most annual Killifish fry are really small when they hatch, so it takes some work to raise them. BUUUUUUUUT, they are fun and worth all the hassle!
Part of what many people like about keeping them is always looking forward to the next generation. It's a little bit like planting annual flowers in the garden. They're beautiful, but they can't last forever. Each year they need help to grow again.
And that part might be awesome for kids. Parents are often way more uncomfortable with death than children actually are, and learning about life cycles is interesting and fun.
I'm no kid, I'm a 30 year old man and I broke down (and I admit it, I nearly called out of work) when I found my female betta dead on the bottom of my tank after getting her only a few days before.

I'm still not a fish person, but, like you, this place I eat at has some big fish tanks, and a couple of the group love to watch me. They'll swim up to the glass, and I love to have that connection between our different species. Keep breeding them you might have a longevity gene pool in them a killi that lives that long you can ask for more money

This is a high quality fish show case video. Well done.

Flash using high speed sync. Technical Mumbo Jumbo of course haha
always been interested in Killifish, Maybe one day. Great Video love how you can bring out their beauty!
Thanks for showcasing my favorite species. Wish they were more popular in the hobby.
Just got a pair today after seeing them for the first time
Beautiful fish, breathtaking footage. Loved it.
That intro was sick, I love annual killis, such irony that some of the most beautiful fish in the hobby don’t live for long
Awesome shots my dude! Killis are so sweet and have so much variety.
Incredible video as always man. Cinematography, music, composition are far above and beyond. Keep up the amazing work.
Beautiful fish. Actually looked at golden wonders at my LFS this week. Great footage as always. It’s a same the annuals dont live longer. So stunning.
Amazing footage & edit! 👍
Editing is on point! You’ve earned my sub.
Hey welcome :) Thank you for the sub.

I saw some in a pets at home in Northern Ireland, while Maidenhead and Grosvenor tropicals (best in Ireland) never get them in.
Awesome video. I've thought about setting up a species tank for the annuals. Killis are so gorgeous.
I don’t know if they are killifish or not, but they have them for sale in china for around 20-40 rmb for one.
Well done! Love this fish now! 😍
Loved the short film style video!
How can the Killifish be a breed from the guppy and a betta ? Guppy is a live bearer and the betta an egg layer? Just curious....
🤷🏻♂️
Are they related to Guppies, Platties,Swordtails and Mollies?
Not that I know of.
Hi, i have a question about the fish. Do the killifish need a heater in the aquarium or can they survive with room-temperature water?
The best videos on RUclips are all yours. Perfection.

Orange Australe / Chocolate Australe / Clown Killi. There a bunch :)

I've never seen the annuals for sale in a pet shop. By the time they get there, their lives must be about 1/2 over.
I hope someone can help me with this:
I would like to get some killifish (probably only like 2 or 3) as I have very limited room. I can only fit a tank about 3 gallons. (Around 11/12 litres)
The tank will be filtered and planted but should that size be okay for 2 or 3?
I know how to care for them etc but nothing I have found says about tank size.
I figure they should be okay as I’m not over stocking and they’re small fish anyway.
They’ll have filtration via a hang on filter to maximise tank space.
Yes, 3 gallons would be enough for a pair or trio (1 male/2 females) of most killifish species.
I know this is WAY late but hope this helps anyway.
Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately I never did get any, I just really don’t have the space for them, but hopefully it helps other people.
They sell for 1000G, not a bad fish but I can’t help but feel disappointed whenever I catch one
