If your referring to the "Hemi", Chrysler was not the first to use this design. Lots of companies used it in different ICE's . Even the famous Ardun Hemi head for Ford flat heads was conceived by Zora Duntov around 1947, long before Chrysler. BTW Mr. Duntov was consider the father of Corvettes.
Yes Lori you are correct. However Chrysler Corporation was the only company to develop and produce a engine with hemispherical combustion chambers that was widely used in production automobiles. The Audern/ Duntov heads to which you refer were very limited aftermarket designs. The 426 HEMI on which Brittany Force's engine is loosely based, simply illustrates the robustness of the original engine design. This is not suprising, as this engine was designed purely as a racing engine to dominate NASCAR. In drag racing the 426 was not initially successful. Most racers were using the 51 to 58 Chrysler Firepower engines. Eventually they discovered that the 426 engine required completely different tuning to live up to it's potential.
@@392hemi9 I always like the early 331 and 354 Chrysler Hemis, had a 331 in my Bantam Roadster. Was a Factory "300" engine with dual Carter 4 barrels, Dual points and factory adjustable rocker arms. Pretty respectful for 300 Horse engine. Had the later 727 trans installed via a adapter. Nice combo.
Another piece of technical trivia, the 51 to 58 engines were the only true HEMIS. If you look at a cutaway of the cylinder head the valves are set at a 45 degree angle to the cylinder bore centerline. This of course results in a very wide/heavy cylinder head. So in an effort to narrow the engine somewhat to better fit in engine compartments of the 1960's automobiles, the 426 engine had it's exhaust valves pulled in 15 degrees in toward bore centerline to narrow the overall width of the engine. Thus the second, and third generation of HEMI engines are technically not true hemihead V8's. Luckily Chrysler Corporation had brains enough to copyright the HEMI designation.
