I totally understand why the kissing scene in the end would rub someone the wrong way, and in 99.9% of cases I'd feel the same way, but I think this is one of those rare cases where I think it's justified. She is basically getting the final closure, the final goodbye, to the love of her life. It seemed like even if she moved on with her life, she always carried with her a small part of hope/belief that he was alive somewhere. For that part of her to be able to finally get closure without holding back was in my mind better for her marriage and future than if she didn't run after him. The last thing she needed was more regret and sadness for things left unsaid or not expressed completely.
I don't see the kiss as a betrayal of her husband, or to feed a selfish romantic urge/need. It was the goodbye she needed to truly let him go once and for all.

A good rule to remember in a survival scenario is the rule of 3's. The average human can survive 3 minutes without air, 3 hours in extreme weather, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. Tom hanks character in this has to contend with all of these. First, find air by escaping the sinking plane. Second find shelter from the storming sea which is the life raft and the island to escape the worst of the weather. Third is to locate a source of water, or in this case coconut milk. Fourth is securing food, which is done by coconuts and seafood, but he needed fire to cook them and for improved shelter

39:56 And people ask: "what was in that package?", which many have theorized that it was a satellite phone-which could have been used to get Chuck off the island quicker, but that isn't the case. Though Chuck does not end up opening the package in the movie, in the script he did.
In the script, the Angel Wing Package caught Chuck’s eye. Instead of tearing it open recklessly like the others, he pauses a moment-studying the art on the package. He imitates the design by trying to unsuccessfully draw it in the dirt with a stick. Then, he carefully cuts the package open with a stone knife. Inside the box is no satellite phone, instead, the box contains two jars of homemade green salsa and a letter. Chuck studies the letter, which reads, “You said our life was a prison. Dull. Boring. Empty. I can’t begin to tell you how much that hurt. I don’t want to lose you. I’m enclosing some salsa, the verde you like. Use it on your sticky rice and think of home. Then come home-to me. We’ll find the spice in our lives again. Together. I love you. Always. Bettina.”

People saying that the movie was spoiled before watching it and people saying the movie was spoiled after watching it are two different types of people. Yes you know he gets off the island but him getting off the island was not the point of the movie. It was everything he has to do to survive both mentally and physically. How does he cope with the isolation, with the absolute loneliness of his situation. You have to remember HE doesn't know if he's going to be rescued or sail away. If it was just about him getting off the island then the moment he got rescued it should have ended the movie. Plus with him being gone for so long how life can just simply move on without him, and what he thought he was coming home to was all just in his head.

Here's how I see the ending... he lost everything but she moved on. When he came back he was robbed of the moment he deserved after everything he went through. The thought of love of his life kept him alive and all he wanted was to get back to her. She gave him a reason to live. When he got home he was robbed of that emotional reunion and she realized that so she ran after him. It was the only thing she could possibly give him. She said exactly what he waited so long to hear.

When you said at 26:30 that we can't escape time, I instantly had to think about something I read recently in the book "Der Schwarm" of Frank Schätzing where one of the protagonists visits his inuit family and takes part in a journey. His uncle says: the idea of wasted time is an invention of the "civilised" people (don't quote me on that, that's just in about what I remember). That just because you don't use every minute productive and efficient, it's not wasted. It's not directly related to the movie but time is an essential theme and to some part, I think Chuck came to the same realisation.

I know I'm a year late and someone touched on this subject. But i just want to elaborate. Subject, "Kelly".
    Imagine:
The person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with, the best person you knew, the love of your life...
They Die, suddenly, far from you. You had a funeral for them, but you never got to see their body.
You cried for so long. Every now and again when you think of them, you begin sob a little. Sometimes you still cry, even though it's years later. So much of your heart went into that person and, just like their life, that love was cut from you. That love is still there, with that person.
Just because you can move on, doesnt mean you have that part of you returned.
Kelly held it together really well when she saw her love returned in person. I doubt many of us would have kept such a composure. When her love was leaving again, (in the rain that could have symbolized the thing that took her love away to begin with) she couldn't hold it together anymore. All of her love that was cut, off came rushing back in an instant.

I think the rain scene is very real in terms of Helen Hunt's feeling because in another movie that would have actually been the Notebook scene where her lover (her fiancée) finally returns to her. BUT, instead, this is Castaway and so it feels strange and out of place, because Tom still feels out of place in society.
A note: It /could/ be taken that the husband was afraid that Helen would run away into the night with Tom and so he ends up convincing her not to go to him when they were at the FedEx celebration. And so he prevented their reunion.
Also, at the FedEx Celebration. Tom seemed more overstimulated with such a gathering of people. he went from nobody to everybody. I'm sure they all had the best intentions (even down to the seafood catering) but they just smothered poor Tom with too much too quickly and he sought his familiar comfort of solitude. It really is like Iron Man's cave imprisonment but longer and completely alone. It's being dropped into a freaking heavy metal concert when for 4 years you were deaf and in solitary.
The Crossroads represented him finally regaining his power.

    3. From IMDB: To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy.
Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds and grow out his hair for his time spent on the deserted island. During this hiatus
    4. Extremely resourceful
    5. In a recent interview Hanks says that Chuck went back to Belinda (the Winged lady). Inside the first package was her divorce papers.
    6. The speech that includes, "I had power over nothing...." is what gets to me.
    7. Wilson was Chuck's connectivity to sanity. That's why he kept talking to him.

I think even though Kelly stays with her husband and she may be sincere about moving on, this is still a raw deal for him. Because most men would probably spend the rest of that marriage wondering in the back of their mind if they were really the new love of her life of if she was just trapped with them for the sake of the kids. I wouldn't want someone having to do that for me.

I’m a fan of survival and bushcraft. The number one thing to secure is water. But to get safe water you usually need fire, unless you can find another way to filter/purity water. So typically the survival checklist is: Fire, water, shelter, then food. You can actually survive for a while without food, but a day or two without water and you’re dead. Exposure can be dangerous so finding or making shelter is important. Usually once you have set up basics you can focus on food.

Water is still your number one requirement, regardless. You HAVE to consume water or you WILL die. Even if it is not the safest to drink, you absolutely MUST secure water FIRST before anything else.

Ending of this movie rips me apart every time. I mean, on the one hand he had been presumed dead, so of course she was going to find a new guy. But you also wish it were possible for her to just drop everything and go back to him somehow, even though it's impossible.

I think him leaving the message on the island is one of the most human moments of the entire film. Tom Hanks is in full survivor mode; borderline animalistic. He has deadpan eyes; no more art on the walls; eating raw fish. His only concern is satisfying his basic, primal needs and surviving to the next day.
    And yet...
He retains the most basic human need to be remembered. Even when for years his only concern had been to survive, it was not death at sea that truly haunted him. No, he was prepared for that. Rather, what he truly feared was being forgotten. Lost. You might almost say that his greatest fear was to be...
    ...cast away.
See what I did there? lol

10:30 Water, food, warmth, shelter. I'm not sure if that's the order, but those are certainly the main things for survival.
19:30 The ice skates are probably more useful than regular shoes because they have metal blades, not very sharp blades, but blades. They do not need to be worked on to make a sharp edge like rocks do.

my favorite thing about this movie is its realistic now they would have an actor getting a workout and getting stronger moving heavy stuff to have a shelter etc but here he really struggled to survive and thought of killing himself plus the aftermath how he wasn't the same that can really change someone

Definitely "Philadelphia", "A League of their Own"; would also include "Cloud Atlas".
In "Cloud Atlas", an ensemble piece spread over several cultures and time periods, Hanks is unrecognizable in at least one of the incarnations. Several are Hanks cast as nefarious characters.

Helen Hunt is the girlfriend's name. In an interview, Tom Hanks said he gained 40 pounds for part of this film and then they halted filming until he lost the weight for the island scenes. Talk about dedication to a role. Personally, I think she could have waited more than four years; but, that's just me.

At the time the best one we had seen. Can't believe the game and this movie was 22 years ago
